Biographie de l'auteur

By day, River works as a (mostly) mild mannered physician in a remote Alaskan town and has accumulated the wacky stories that come with the job. At night, her inner badass comes out to play. River likes to read and write edgy books that contain varying levels of humor and plenty of hot, steamy sex between two hunky men.

So a while ago, some of my friends strongly recommended I read this book. I bought it, but had so many books to read that I never got to it.

Still more and more of my friends read and loved the book and it was getting unrestful in it’s kindle cage and wanted to be read. With all the buzz surrounding this book, I finally caved. =)

My friends thought I would love it and they were completely right!!! It was an almost perfect read for me! Now after thinking so much about the book, I just had to get the paperback (only my 6th M/M paperback) of this story. That’s how good it is <3 Highly recommend this book!

The Cover: looks sexy as hell. Love that smile. For me the floating torso is a bit weird and it would be much prettier without it, but I still like it a lot!

The Title: feels a bit mysterious, but you very quickly get what it means when you read the blurb. I think it grabs your attention and makes you want to read the blurb and then the book, so it is effective as well.

The Story: So the whole concept of the backup boyfriend worked very well for me! Why you ask? Well, because I’m a big sucker for “straight boys” being comfortable enough with their gay friends to stand up for them and help them out. Loved when he saw his new buddy in an awkward position and wanted to protect Alec.

The hot connection that develops between them as they explore things is sizzling and I loved that Dylan had no problem with the whole gay sex thing. Actually neither he nor the author is a big fan of labels. So if you are expecting a typical “Gay for you” trope you won’t find it here. Which I loved and was very refreshing to me.

One of the best books I've read in months! 3 décembre 2013
Par Amazon Customer - Publié sur Amazon.com

I think this might be one of the best books I've read in a long time. When I picked it up, I thought this would be another gay for you contemporary romance, a trope that annoys me unless it's presented in a context that's actually believable. This leapt beyond my expectations, with characters who were distinct, realistic, and amazingly drawn. Dylan (the apparently straight guy) is artfully crafted with a tragic background that makes his latent bisexuality very believable.

Beyond that, the romance is beautiful, the sex scenes are hot, and the side characters were fun. I'm really looking forward to reading their stories if/when they're published. This is not a light, easy read; it's a complicated, well-crafted story I'll likely keep coming back to re-read.

I borrowed it from the Amazon Prime kindle library last night, read the entire thing in one sitting, and now I'm back to purchase a copy. It's that good.

Review from My Overstuffed Bookshelf 20 décembre 2013

“I wouldn’t miss this fake-homo show for all the Gucci Shoes on Rodeo Drive.”

That sums up the book for me. I heard everyone buzzing about The Backup Boyfriend by author River Jaymes and everyone kept telling me to go buy it. So I finally caved and bought it for myself to see what all the hype was about. Readers, you do not want to miss out on reading this book!

Alec Johnson just lost his two year boyfriend to another man. So what does any sane Doctor do when this happens? He goes out and buys a motorcycle. Not a brand spankin’ new one, but one that needs some TLC. Enter Dylan Booth, aka HOT STUFF, into the mix. Alec takes his bike to Dylan to repair and to teach him how to ride. Out of the gutter readers! We are talking about riding lessons on the bike. (The other rides come later in the story.) Reluctantly, Dylan decides to go ahead and help Alec with the riding lessons and fixing up the bike. When he meets Alec at his house to get started, he has the pleasure of meeting Tyler, Alec’s ex boyfriend. Tyler just happens to be arriving to pick up the last of his stuff and also brought along his new boyfriend. Dylan feels bad for Alec and becomes protective of his feelings. Alec reminds him of a childhood friend that he protected on the streets and end up losing to HIV/AIDS five years ago. This is where the setup of the Backup Boyfriend comes into play. Dylan pretends to be Alec’s new boyfriend much to everyone’s surprise.

What happens is sexual tension, playful banter, outrageous scenes of humor and plenty of romance that will have you sighing with happiness. Another reason I loved this book is the fact that it addresses the issue of labels. We are constantly putting names to things such as gay, bisexual, etc. What I like about Dylan in this book is he doesn’t like those labels. It is not that he doesn’t want to accept that he is bisexual or gay, he just wants to be himself with no category that he should fit in. Love isn’t something that can be defined and put away neatly in a little box with a label on it and people shouldn’t classify it as such. Plus his sarcastic humor was a blast to read whenever he was within five feet of their mutual friend Noah.

Personally, I can’t wait for more of this series. I have already added her previous work to my wishlist to buy soon. Author River Jaymes is an author that everyone needs to watch.

Closer to 4 stars than 3 but... 4 décembre 2013
Par Wycked - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle
I'd honestly give this one more stars but I never read the 4 or 5 stars when I'm checking out other books since so many reviews seen manufactured and copy/pasted for the benefit of the reader.

My favorite line:

"This is the messiest, geekiest kink ever. Why the hell is this a total turn-on?"

I read this book through the Kindle Library and I'm quite positive I'll buy it so River Jaymes receives what is due her for this book. It is mostly light-hearted but Dylan adds just a bit of heavy and angst to it but not enough that I ever wanted to beat him over the head. His issues are deeply rooted and supported through a rough life. Understandable. Alec was sweet, and I felt a little naive, considering his profession and for a long time I felt he loved the ideal of love. He figured it out. He learned something about himself by the end of the book. It was great.

Loved the motorcycle angle. And I absolutely loved the contrast the author made between Dylan's stark apartment and his garage. It was at that precise moment I got Dylan. You see his emotional side in his love and care of his motorcycles. Alec saw it too and it deepened his feelings for Dylan.

I'm not much on repeating the plot line so I'll just say the blurb is pretty much dead on. And I commend the author in not making Dylan run for the hills or the nearest woman to reaffirm his masculinity. There was no woman in this book vying for Dylan or causing problems or being a bitch. You were told Dylan was straight and not shown. It was a plot moving mechanism but I personally didn't mind it because I liked Dylan from the beginning. His protective instincts kicked in and he went with it.

One of the better books I've read lately.

Would I recommend it? Yes.

Labels don't matter, love does 1 décembre 2013
Par nicki - Publié sur Amazon.com

Alec wears his heart on his sleeve, which isn't always a great thing. Tyler is such a cool cat you don't know where his heart is and Dylan's heart is so encased in iron you'd need a blowtorch to get to it. Could Alec be that blowtorch? Or does the iron heart push Alec back to Tyler? I'm so glad I read this story and found out the answer to these questions. This book has such heartbreaking moments but the love and happiness and friendship in the story make those tears worthwhile. I can't wait to read the next book in this series especially since each book looks like it will feature a different couple (though I hope the old couples have guest appearances!) oh and did I mention the sex was GREAT? Trust me, it was :)

LOVE CHANGES.........EVERYTHING!!! 4 décembre 2013
Par Ms. Diva - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle
River continues to blow my mind with her sense of humor which has permeated throughout the entire book. What brilliance. I laughed and cried and stayed up much too late, for I could not put this book down.

Both MCs were well written and their chemistry was off the chart. Dylan was so scared to lose again that he encased his heart, to protect himself from another loss. With great bravado he faced the world, not really living, until Alec.

Alec was the perfect mate, for he wore his heart on his sleeve. It wasn't an easy journey towards their HEA, and Noah and Tyler, did not help much, but it was worth the bumpy ride. Noah and Tyler were well crafted secondary characters that supported the story well. Noah is such a DRAMA QUEEN, he brought the *Funny* to this book, that was laced with a thought provoking theme.

This book packed a punch.....Thank you River.......WELL DONE!!!
Anxiously awaiting Tyler's path to his HEA, and maybe more DRAMA with Noah............
