Présentation de l'éditeur

Wonderful photographs and I-was-there accounts ... superb' - Sunday Times 'One of the most audacious additions to Fab Four literature' - The Herald This paperback edition marks the 50th anniversary of The Beatles' first Top 20 hit 'Love Me Do' in 1962. A magical history tour of eyewitness accounts, anecdotes and many never-before-seen photographs. Discover the truth about McCartney's Kintyre drug busts and Lennon's Highland car crash. The Fab Four: George, John, Paul and Ringo, a quartet of working-class kids whose magical songs and revolutionary influence still inspires four decades on. More has been written about The Beatles than any other rock group in history and it is difficult to imagine that there remains anything new to say, but lifelong Beatles fan Ken McNab reveals for the first time, in intimate detail, the pivotal part Scotland played in the genesis of the group and the extraordinary connections that were fostered north of the border before, during and after their meteoric rise to global fame. McNab follows The Beatles as rough and ready unknowns on their first tour of Scotland in 1960 - when they were booed off stage in Bridge of Allan - and again, in 1964, as all-conquering heroes. He also discovers that the momentous decision to break up the band was made in Scotland and provides details of the McCartneys' lives in Mull of Kintyre and Lennon's childhood holidays in Durness.

Beatle fans will find a plethora of treasures in this book. During the Pre-Fab year of 1960 (when the band line up was John, Paul, George, Pete & Stu) the Beatles made a stop in Scotland. They toured northeastern Scotland backing Johnny Gentle. They also conquered Scotland in 1963 and 1964. On October 5, 1963 the Beatles performed at the Concert Hall. They appeared in concert venues January 3-6, 1963 and October 5-7 of 1963 and April 29-30, 1964 and October 19-21, 1964.

John Lennon spent a portion of his boyhood summers in Durness, Scotland where many of his maternal relatives lived.

An interesting aside - Stu Sutcliffe (1940-1962) was born in Scotland. Fortunately this book has dedicated a chapter to Stu, who left the band to marry Astrid Kircherr. John Lennon had Scottish ancestry on Julia Stanley's side. Ringo also had Scottish ancestry, but his lineage was paternal. Richard Starkey, aka Ringo Starr's name Starkey originated in the Shetland Islands. The Harrisons made ferry trips to Scotland AND Ireland during George's formative years. Louise French Harrison's dad was born in Ireland and she had many relatives who lived there.

Paul McCartney wrote the beautiful 1977 classic "Mull of Kintyre" as a nod to the beauty of Scotland. He and John made trips there during the post Beatle years.

This is a wonderful book and a delightful companion book to this one is The Beatles and Ireland

I have read many books on The Beatles and this is a rare treasure! Lots of tidbits about their pre-fame days. Informative chapter on Stu Sutcliffe.

Every Beatles fan knows they backed Johnny Gentle on his tour of Scotland just prior to their fame. I've always wondered what happened on that tour? Where did they play What was the set list? What did people think of them? It's all in this fantastically compelling book. Interviews with people who were there. And who knew John Lennon's closeness to Scotland? He had relatives there and spent many happy holidays with them.(and that was where he was heading when he had the bad car crash during the Abbey Road recording sessions) The book also covers Scots who had associations with the Beatles-like Lulu , Lonnie Donegan,, Davey Johnstone (Elton John Band) and Donovan etc. I've read a lot of books on the Beatles-but this one has so much NEW material it stands out. Highly recommended!

This interesting addition to the huge library of books about the Beatles celebrates their links with Scotland, of which there are many. Some are tenuous, but others deep and long lasting. They range from John's childhood holidays with relatives, through to their first ever tour backing Johnny Gentle Johnny Gentle and The Beatles - First Ever Tour, to Beatlemania and the Mull of Kintyre. One of the most enjoyable parts of the book though is the recollections of those lucky enough to see the Beatles in concert or who worked with them - photographers, other musicians and friends. It was wonderful to read their memories of seeing the band play to a mere handful of people, long before they found commercial success, or read of fans phoning the band at their hotel, before they became so disullusioned with touring that they stepped down from the stage. If those early days of touring do interest you, I highly recommend Beatlemania! The Real Story of the Beatles UK Tours 1963-1965. Although this does deal with only a small part of the Beatles story, it is a very interesting one. The author is open about being a fan first and that does shine through in his writing, which makes it enjoyable to read. Lastly, I read the kindle edition of this book and it does contain illustrations.

I really wanted to love this book, and as much as I greatly enjoyed all the first hand accounts, the book became quite repetitive. Also, there are numerous glaring errors (ex: Beatles wearing leather on first visit to Scotland in 1960). I would give this book a miss and suggest Mark Lewisohn's "Tune In" instead.
