Book Description

It is said of those who are small and crooked-backed in their bodies, that their minds are equally cross-grained and their tempers as ungainly as their stature. But no one had ever said this of Mary Belton. Her friends, indeed, were very few in number; but those who knew her well loved her as they knew her, and there were three or four persons in the world who were ready at all times to swear that she was faultless. It was the great happiness of her life that among those three or four her own brother was the foremost. Will Belton's love for his sister amounted almost to veneration, and his devotion to her was so great, that in all the affairs of his life he was prepared to make her comfort one of his first considerations.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Belton Estate- Heir or Error Apparent? 3 avril 2000
Par Bookreader - Publié sur Amazon.com
This novel of Trollope's poses his usual question: will the middle class heroine find true love in spite of various social/emotional conflicts? In this case his poverty-stricken heroine has two suiters and must decide between the one she loves and the one who loves her. The dilemma is a tricky one since the man she loves has culture and wealth and breeding but no strong feelings for her; while the rougher and uncultured man who loves her is truly devoted to her. Trollope has written better paced novels but this one does hold the reader until the solution is reached.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 beautiful story, lousy copy 9 janvier 2008

A wonderful story that hooks you right out of the box...with all the usual "you are there" Trollopian visual descriptions. I think that Trollope was one of the world's great novelists and he does not disappoint here. But the publisher! As noted by other reviewers, misspellings, malapropisms and atrocious punctuation abound and really ticked me off considering the price of this book! There is totally no excuse for this slovenly editing. I think it was done by a computer program...another victim of outsourcing. Another thing is that although the listing is for Dodo press, the copy I received from Amazon was from BiblioBazaar!? So the listed publisher is probably not at fault.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 One of my favorite Trollope novels 2 octobre 2007
Par J. Long - Publié sur Amazon.com
This Trollope novel has been one of my favorites for years, the character of Will Belton is wonderful, and the episodes between Clara and her fiance Frederick's family are priceless. There is so much to like about this story, it would be a shame for a reader to pass it up.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A good story, but where was the copyeditor?!? 23 décembre 2007

I'm halfway through this book, and I'm really enjoying it. HOWEVER, the edition I received seems to have been copyedited by preschoolers. Most of the commas are missing, which makes it a challenge to decipher Trollope's often long, meandering sentences. And the text is littered with misspellings. Fortunately, it only took a few chapters for me to get in the rhythm of this comma-deprived edition, and I do like the story. I'd recommend this book only if you're a real Trollope devotee.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another delightful "engagement procedural" from Trollope 12 octobre 2012
Par Steve Forsyth - Publié sur Amazon.com
This is one of Trollope's writings in which his focus is solely on the main characters and their story, with no B or C story to pad out the length - as such, the pace is rapid, carrying the reader through without any distraction, which is a nice change of pace following his longer novels.

The story involves one Clara Amedroz, who through the death of her father, is about to lose her home, as the estate is going to fall to a distant cousin, Will Belton. Will comes to visit before her father's death, and quickly falls in love with her - but his wild impatience leads to a hasty marriage proposal that scares Clara off, particularly as she is already taken with Captain Aylmer, the nephew of Lady Winterfield, whom Clara had become close with. Upon the death of Lady Winterfield, Captain Aylmer himself comes to propose marriage to Clara, and this she accepts.

The remainder of the novel explores the dawning realization of Clara that Aylmer is the lesser of the two men, who basically sees her as a conquest to add to his burgeoning career as a member of Parliament. Will, in the meantime, is nothing but giving and nurturing, establishing himself as Clara's surrogate brother, though he'd prefer to be much more.

As is typical in Trollope's world, Clara would easily give herself over to Will, but for her pride in accepting from him what she would see as charity, and for her already standing engagement to Aylmer. Complicating the issue is her friendship with the controversial Mrs. Askerton, whose shady past brands her as a troublemaker, and whom Aylmer's mother insists Clara can no longer see if she wishes to ally herself with the Aylmer clan. Lady Aylmer is another of Trollope's recurring characters as the unapproving parent who must be dealt with.

What sets this novel apart from most of Trollope's other writings is the strength of Clara's character. While she exhibits some of the typically maddening elements of the prideful woman who will not accept what she truly wants out of propriety, she also brings to the table a strong self-will that is pretty bold for the Victorian era. Some of her early conversation with Captain Aylmer reveal a very enlightened attitude by Trollope regarding the plight of women in a man's world as Clara bemoans the unfair advantages men have in being able to determine their own fates, while women must resign themselves to theirs.

Indeed, the main struggle of the novel revolves around Clara both wanting to accept Will, but also not wanting to follow the established procedures of society which dictate that a woman must simply accept whatever offer comes along. Watching her come to her own resolve and standing up to Lady Aylmer provides some of Trollope's best material. Nowhere is this better seen then when Mrs. Askerton, frustrated by Clara's unwillingness to see Will when he comes to visit, says to her: "Indeed, if you had any of that decent feeling of feminine inferiority which ought to belong to all women, he would have found you sitting on the door-step of his house waiting for him." Ironically this line comes from the woman who's previous marital infidelity set many of these events into motion in the first place!

It's one of Trollope's better setups, even if it is a familiar type of story for him. The characters are likeable - Will's impetious mixture of brotherly affection and childish impatience makes him one of Trollope's most enjoyable personalities, and Clara's refreshing sense of self-esteem never crosses the line into irritating stubborness along the lines of a character like Lily Dale.

Short, focused, and filled with amusing characters, THE BELTON ESTATE comes highly recommended.
