If you only buy one other cookbook make this it - Annabel Langbein is brilliant.
Each recipe in this book comes with a time to prepare and a time to cook. Most recipes have preparation time of at most 20 minutes. Many have short cooking times too. Most have few ingredients and those are typically on-hand rather than exotic. This is ideal cookbook when you have less than an hour to get a meal on the table. Several of the dishes I can get on the table in less than half an hour and still get rave reviews.
I have not tried any of Annabel Langbein's other cookbooks. I find the recipes in this one as reliable as my America's Test Kitchen cookbooks (though without the amusing "what not to do" pictures).
Dishes that I cook frequently for dinner are Baked Lemon Chicken with Potatoes and Rosemary (10 mins to prepare and a hour to cook), Pork Fillet with a Red Wine Vinegar Sauce (30 minutes roughly to simultaneously prepare sauce and cook the pork), Soy and Ginger Glazed Salmon (5 minutes to prepare and 6 minutes to cook), and Flash Roasted Salmon with Chili-Lime Glaze (5 minutes to prepare and 6 minutes to cook). I now cook a variety of Fritatas for lunch. I have made Frozen Chantilly Coconut Cake with Berry Compote and now use the Berry Compote to top my Pavlovas.
Typically one of the first things I do when I get a new cookbook is to work out exactly how many ingredients I can leave out of a recipe and still get great flavour. With this recipe book this work has already been done for you.
I am a New Zealander like the author but I have lived abroad since 1997. I found out about this book from my mother during a recent visit and bought a copy before returning to Texas. Most recipes translate well. I have even had luck with the bread recipes though this does take some feel for the dough due to the differences in flour.
I'm so pleased that Annabel's books are finally getting some international exposure. The Kiwi's are our Aussie cousins and yet her books are virtually unknown in Australia. The Best of Annabel Langbiens cookbook is my favourite for quick easy meals and baking. Buy it...you'll love it.
