Description de l'ouvrage

25 juin 2013

The definitive guide for tourists and locals alike, this comprehensive guidebook draws on a lifetime of local experience for 1001 great things to do in Los Angeles.

Probably more than any other major cultural metropolis, Los Angeles is a city for those in the know. A guide like no other, this is the first book to go beyond locations and events to tap into the variety of things only a local could know. The Best Things to Do in Los Angeles explores every aspect of Los Angeles life. Find the best spots to view the Hollywood sign or exactly where to catch postgame fireworks at Dodger Stadium. Track down the most authentic eateries in ethnic enclaves, and engage in L.A.’s legendary food wars, from hamburgers to French dips. Follow the most beautiful routes up and down the Pacific coast, take your own unique architectural tour of the Hollywood Hills, or find out where the city’s best bookstores are and read up on it all instead.
Organized by theme – from destinations to views and sights, food and drink, and of course the Hollywood trail of superstar haunts and famous locations – and with contributions from celebrated Angelenos including, Gary Baseman, Flea, Ludo Lefebvre, Sasha Spielberg, and more, this is simply the most helpful and fun guidebook there is to the City of Angels.

Revue de presse

"In vast Los Angeles, it's easy to feel at a loss for where to begin (or to be straight-up lost). Not with a new guide to the city, The Best Things to Do in Los Angeles: 1001 Ideas. L.A. native Joy Yoon offers a fresh view of the town, suggesting sites and activities for the traveler (or even local) with contemporary tastes. Her "classics" chapter covers predictable tourist spots like Chateau Marmont and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but the rest of the book offers up insider-y info, such as a primer on local fashion designers, and a tip on where to find Korean short-rib tacos." ~Wall Street Journal

“It’s a delight to come across the likes of Joy Yoon’s The Best Things to Do in Los Angeles, a big fat, fun-to-read compendium that offers fresh perspectives on old LA standbys alongside eclectic, unexpected leisure-time ideas. Yoon has expertly crafted over a thousand mini essays that will make you want to take an LA vacation pronto or get out of the house for an adventure if you live in Southern California.” ~Passport Magazine

"Thoughtfully organized by type of experience rather than geography, the book does the impossible and makes a bewilderingly complex megalopolis remarkably accessible. Tightly-written capsule descriptions give you everything you need to know to plan your voyage. The book leaves no LA neighborhood stone unturned; from behind the Orange Curtain to the San Gabriel Valley. Yoon even provides brief education on local fashion designers, philanthropists and seasonal street fairs." ~Cool Hunting

Par sue few - Publié sur Amazon.com
Wow! A great book. I, too, was born and raised in Los Angeles. My family moved to different locatiions when I was much younger, so I was familiar with almost all of what Joy Yoon was talking about. Her chapter on the streets, tunnels and bridges was so great - how often do we take all of those streets, tunnels and bridges for granted without examing them closely. When I finished the book, I didn't want to let go, so I ended up reading the index and found a lot of names and places I had overlooked! I don't live in Southern CA now, but am so homesick; this book is motivating me to go back home again.

Joy Yoon, you are wonderful!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An original guidebook for ALL of L.A. 14 juillet 2013

Reading this book is like eavesdropping in on a conversation between people who knows all the secrets and ins-and-outs of the city -- plus it's a bit addictive (easy to read and not too much time spent on one topic, you'll find yourself flipping from page to page, like on a high speed tour through L.A.). What I most like about this book is that it shows there is more to Los Angeles than just west of downtown. For that reason much of the information contained within it is very original, not published anywhere else, or hard to find online, whereas most other travel books on Los Angeles seem like they gathered their information from . . . well, other travel books or popular travel websites. 1001 in L.A. makes you realize that no matter where you are in Los Angeles (north, south, east, or west), there is someplace interesting close by that you probably had no idea existed, and is worth exploring.

As a native Angeleno who moved away 10 years ago I often find myself at a loss of things to do when back home, overwhelmed by the changes, as well as, all of the amazing things I grew up with and am not quite sure still remain. This book not only is a fun read but a great guide for anyone in Los Angeles, be they a tourist, lifer or a someone like me looking to see their home town with new eyes.

I am now in the process of challenging myself to do all of the 1001 things listed. There are a lot of reminders of the little things from my childhood I had forgotten and/or places I haven't visited in a while. What intrigues me the most are the many places listed that I have driven by all my life and never experienced/taken a second glance at what appears to have been missed adventures.

Thanks to this book I won't be saying "What should I do?" for a long time!

Although I tend to explore cities finding my own discoveries or go to places recommended by trusted friends, this book has the insight from a local's perspective. The range of destinations is extensive from the old LA must-sees to the hidden gems that we all look for on a trip. Not your typical tourist guide but really geared for travelers. A must buy for anyone who wants to see the real LA. Look forward to going back after reading this book.Best Things to Do in Los Angeles: 1001 Ideas

As a traveller who loves to see and experience places like a true local, it is difficult to find a book that doesn't simply regurgitate places and activities you've seen in every persons photo album. This book gives you the lowdown on what people from Los Angeles LOVE about Los Angeles. It is not only informative, with way too many things to do and see, but is well written with a level of wit and humour that is thoroughly entertaining. Joy Yoon is definitely besties with Los Angeles, and with this guide you too will fall in love with this amazing city.
