Descriptions du produit

Revue de presse

"An alarming look at an athlete whose public glories masked a day-to-day existence of profound superficiality" (Golfweek)

"I learned more about Tiger in The Big Miss than I have in eleven years of covering him on the PGA Tour" (Damon Hack, Senior Writer Sports Illustrated)

"Insightful ... dissects what makes Tiger, Tiger" (Wall Street Journal)

Présentation de l'éditeur

In March 2004, Hank Haney received a call from Tiger Woods in which the golf champion asked Haney to be his coach. It was a call that would change both men’s lives. Tiger – only 28 at the time – was by then already an icon, judged by the sporting press as not only one of the best golfers ever, but possibly the best athlete ever. But Tiger was always looking to improve, and he wanted Hank’s help. Over the next six years of working together, the supremely gifted Woods collected six major championships and rewrote golf history. Hank was one of the very few people allowed behind the curtain.

Always haunting Tiger was his fear of ‘the big miss’ – the wildly inaccurate golf shot that can ruin an otherwise solid round – and it was because that type of blunder was sometimes part of Tiger’s game that Hank carefully redesigned his swing mechanics.

Towards the end of their time together, the champion’s laser-like focus began to blur and he became less willing to put in punishing hours practicing. Hints that Tiger hungered to reinvent himself were present in his bizarre infatuation with elite military training, and – in a development Hank didn’t see coming – in the scandal that would make headlines in late 2009. It all added up to a big miss that Hank, try as he might, couldn’t save Tiger from.

There’s never been a book about Tiger Woods that is as intimate and revealing – or one so wise about what it takes to coach a superstar athlete.

Curiosity was the main reason I wanted to read this book, and I can say that I wasn't disappointed. Hank Haney has written a very respectful account of his time coaching Tiger. This is not a put down or gossip session. It does help uncover some of the reasons behind Tiger's apparent coldness and dealings with those who work for him. Some of the background dealing with his parents, his childhood, and his major interest in extreme sports and the military is insightful. I was a huge Tiger admirer until all the scandal but after reading this book I have adjusted to not particularly liking the man but to once again admiring his unique golf skills and his determination to win at all cost. My only criticism of the book would be that at times Hank Haney's efforts to explain his coaching methods and reasoning behind it, was a little too repetitive. Other than that a good and interesting read.

I'm only about 1/4 the way through, I'm a slow reader! But so far so good, it's very enjoyable and I look forward to finishing the book.

Pretty good. Wasn't the pasting I was anticipating. He was even handed. Given how tiger treated him. He could have paid out on him.

An illuminating insight of Tiger Woods psychie by the author. Interesting to view the promise and the self destruction of an athlete through the eyes of a dedicated coach and his journey into molding Tiger with so little assista

Nice subjective insights. It feels like Haney really needed to prove himself as a coach afterwards. He's proud of what he achieved with TW fair enough.
The write up suggests HH was always ready for TW but never felt it so vice versa. My guess is that HH felt left out now and then. A distant relationship with the pupil he highly respects for golfskills / work ethic and less for social skills. It makes sense that TW was pretty upset about this publication. Truly an interesting read, Now I am awaiting the long read of TW: My years in training with The Seals, Butch, Hank and Sean.
