On 01:01:12 Anna woke up to the New Year. She was 51, everything had changed including the dog.

‘The Binary Year’ explores one woman’s journey from a highly successful international career into a complete change of direction.

'The Binary Year' highlights the challenges surrounding the fostering process and the complexities of mid~life, choices, family, friends and the passage of time as seen through world events and experiences. Love and laughter are never far behind in this tale of one ordinary family.

Tracey Tester - "I downloaded this book when I saw a link saying it was currently free on Amazon - although I certainly would not mind paying for it.

I loved the way the book was written in diary format, with some entries being relatively short and others longer. I could not put down my Kindle while reading this book - it was most inconvenient that I have to work and could only read it for half an hour on my lunch break each day !

It certainly gives a great insight into the fostering process - I did not realise the full extent of the 'upheaval' for want of a better word, that prospective foster parents have to go through before they are even accepted (poor Leo !)

That said, it definitely isn't a tale of woe - the humour in the book (provided mostly by the wonderful Lily) is great and I found myself laughing out loud at some parts. I would even bookmark certain pages so that I would read them to my partner when I got home from work.

I highly recommend this book to anyone and I will definitely be reading it again."

The sequel to 'The Binary Year', 'The Year of the Jubilee' is now available out October 2013.

'The Binary Year' gives an interesting look into what goes on for those who wish to become foster parents. Having spent two years as a ward in foster care myself, I knew little of the challenges that my foster parents faced, but I did get enough negative daily feedback from their stress. Of the three homes I was in, only one of them could compare to just how smoothly Anna fostered her children.

This semi-autobiographical account was both entertaining and inspiring, as it follows one woman's year and that of her family through their triumphs and hardships in the form of a diary. Despite the sacrifices and lifestyle changes, Anna Maslin proves to be smart and resourceful, and shows just how much it is worth it in the end to be able to help children. Though expanding one's family is most definitely not an easy road or for those who give up easily. Overall, this was a very enjoyable story!

Very interesting story. Even the typos, etc., did not distract me (most unusual, lol). I laughed out loud many times at the comments from Lily. A lovely family who seem to face their challenges head on. Much happiness to you in your busy "retirement"!

If you've ever taken on a socially spirited task only to find out that getting to the actual endeavor will be a thankless experience, share in Anna Maslin's experience (or semi-autobiographical) experience of raising older children and seeking to help younger children by bringing them into your home.

The British social service system already has a world-wide reputation as God's own personal reminder of his creation's ineptitude, and in becoming a foster parent Anna Maslin writes in diary form about all the little life changes she needs to make, and the bureaucratic assumptions of things like that she does not know how to put away a knife.

It's a funny and endearing read about putting family and helping people above all obstacles.

Binary - composed of two parts : this semi autobiographical account is a candid and thoughtful reflection of a successful woman whose life changes dramatically in one year . Often touching, with moments of humour and shades of meaning which will absorb and involve the reader to the end.

The book is written in an intimate diary style so you can adjust to the rhythm and tempo for that day and that entry alternating at leisure . This is a versatile and accessible technique that allows topical and contestable issues to be diarised . Fresh wholly plausible , and lightly handled . In short ,an exceedingly intelligent mediation on life .

I downloaded the Binary Year when I saw it was free on Twitter and I have to say I really enjoyed it. The diary format is really easy to read and the story is compelling. I found I was reading sections to colleagues at work. It is a really unique combination of humor, drama and thoughtful comment which is rare to find. There is an honestly that comes through in the writing without resorting to shock value to hook in the reader. I have actually read the book twice and have recommended it to my family and friends.
