Masterpiece squared 1 juin 2013

The biology of cancer-first edition by Prof. R. A. Weinberg was an immediate hit. A masterpiece for clarity, sublime scholarship and style. The second edition has all of the qualities appreciated by the readers including a very solid chapters update. All chapters have been rewritten and new data added covering the latest trend in scientific literature. A DVD is included containing images and movies.
The book is further enhanced by a process of revision and update that magically cover almost any aspect, including immunology, therapy and cell biology. Prof. Weinberg is famous for scientific articles with a clear and incisive prose and the book offers all the nuances of his style. In addition, topics are extremely well integrated. Students and scientists will be happy to see how chapters are offering superlative insights with a unique perspective of the field. I was waiting the second edition for several years. And I am surprised to see how a masterpiece morphed into another one. Images and printing are state of the art.

Greatly enhanced new edition 1 juillet 2013

This is a classic book but needed refreshing. The new edition is in many ways a completely new book with many new topics and excellent graphics. The writing style is fairly consistent throughout this very comprehensive look into the molecular biology of cancer. Useful to many different levels of readers, starting at the advanced high school level.

a work of literature 6 décembre 2013

Definitely the right textbook for a comprehensive introduction to cancer. Like a giant review article, but with more breathing room to go into historical experiments and explain how we have arrived at the current understanding of cancer. And, lots of excellent illustrations and micrographs. You are getting more than a typical textbook; it is more like a work of literature. "Sidebars" are used often for things to read if you have the time.

If you are not an expert in cell biology, the book takes care to explain concepts in the context of cancer; for example, it gives a primer on the immune system at the beginning of the immunology chapter.

Note, this is not a textbook of cancers or pathology, but of our current understanding of how all cancers work, mostly at the molecular level. I am reading this as a medical student and for that purpose, it is both too long and missing the pathology that I need, but I don't regret it. Like I said, this textbook is more about providing a complete and up-to-date understanding for the science-minded individual. On that basis I can recommend it to an enthusiastic undergraduate.

WOW-how could a textbook be so much fun to read? 27 novembre 2013

Seriously, this was MORE FUN to read than I could have imagined. It is clearly a scholarly masterpiece but it is so well written and in the most interesting style that it is a tremendously enjoyable book to read. Dr. Weinberg takes the reader through the history of discoveries in oncology and in the most interesting way (exploring the initial discovery and how it was substantiated and why OR how it fell apart and why). Each chapter is a masterpiece of its own with detailed, clear, easy to follow figures and tables that enhance the text. Sidebar discussions scattered in the chapters deal with some of the most fascinating questions in biology/ oncology (conservation of gene function, how the powers of the immune system dictate whether transformed cells can form tumors, etc). Have not even gotten to the DVD yet but just finished reading this fascinating textbook. I am an internist with a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry and only, until recently, a passing interest in oncology. Really enjoyed reading this book and will reread it (have written in the margins, underlined). Recommend it highly, more than highly. The accompanying chart is one that I will be taking with me to an oncology conference in December and I bet it is extremely useful for putting presentations of research findings into context!

The cancer biology "bible" 14 avril 2014

I have read the book twice during my Ph D, the first time in the initial stage (version 1) and the second time when finishing (version 2). I bought a book of my own because I am reading it for the third time and I want to make marks on the book directly. Undoubtedly this is the best book for cancer biology!

1. It's suitable for all levels of readers, from fresh graduate students, senior graduate students, postdocs to even PIs.
2. It's very comprehensive, including basics and cutting-edge advances.
3. It's written in plain languages. Clearly, the author has spent efforts to consider how well the readers will absorb, rather than being arrogant and lecturing.
4. there is internal cohesion between the chapters. This is a typical advantage when the book is written by only one author. In the end, when finishing reading all, you will find everything makes so much sense when they are put together.
5. I particularly like the last chapter, a synopsis of rational design of therapeutics based on the mechanisms discussed in the previous chapters.
