Quite Good YA SciFi 20 octobre 2014

The Black Stars by Dan Krokos

This is one of the better YA SciFi stories I have read recently. Mason Stark is a teen hero who finds living up to his reputation can provide some problems.

Mason and his team of ESC cadets find themselves wrapped up in another interstellar war. If a back story had been provided it would be a lot clearer as to why the team feels how they feel. The lack of a back story is the biggest flaw in this otherwise excellent teen tale.

The characters are interesting, they exhibit the arrogance and stupidity of teenagers and they pay for it. Of course they don't pay as high a price as real kids do if they behaved the same way. The arrogance and stupidity comment is based on my own behavior growing up and should not be applied to kids today unless the shoe fits.

I enjoyed the story, there were some inspiring heroics and a entertaining plot.

I highly recommend the book.

Not quite as good as the first, but it still kept me reading through the night 23 octobre 2014

Like the first novel of this series, the story is fast-paced and kept me interested (I'm an adult who loves all kinds of sff, including space opera). In this second part to the series we got to see Tremist school and put a human face on the ones we'd previously thought of as enemies.

What made me knock off a star:

The hero. Mason was a little too perfect in this one. He really didn't fail. I loved the first book because they were all unsure and making mistakes. Here, not so much. There are a couple of negative results to his decisions, but those were exceptions.

The biotech. Like the last book, you just have to suspend your disbelief about a venom that strips your DNA down to its ancestral DNA (what?) and causes an instantaneous physical change into another being (O_o) but which is reversible with a cure (o_O). Really, it's the one thing you just have to accept going in.

The ending. I thought it would be a cliffhanger going in to book 3, but it was resolved in a few strange pages that were not satisfactory. So much was left out. I got the feeling it was there and someone made the author take it out because the book was getting long for the age group. Boo. I wanted to read it. And the book needed it. Hopefully we will get some of it somewhere.

It's always easier for me to focus on what I don't like, which I hope doesn't give the wrong impression. This is a middle grade book written well enough and with enough depth to satisfy this adult and keep her up until all hours. I just wish it had provided as much depth as the first.
