Revue de presse

"Mystery devotees who loved Mankell's Kurt Wallander, and crime-fiction "lifers" who still treasure Sjowall's and Wahloo's Martin Beck, will want to add Paul Hjelm to their short lists of international favorites" (Booklist)

"Thoughtfully haunting and sometimes beautifully written, the first of Hjelm's cases to be translated into English is likely to resonate with readers of the Stieg Larsson trilogy" (Kirkus (starred))

"Arne Dahl has created a school of his own within the Swedish crime writing tradition. He combines global intrigue with intelligence, suspense, and genuine literary quality" (Lars Kepler, Author Of 'the Hypnotist')

"Loose canon Paul Helm and his character-filled team entertainingly chase multiple false leads as they hunt for a Thelonious Monk obsessed assassin" (Metro)

"[A] superb police procedural... Dahl has created a brilliant character and a terrific story, and should that not be enough, this is a classic cop-shop tale of the old school" (The Globe and Mail (Canada))

Présentation de l'éditeur

Sweden's elite are under attack.

Two rich and powerful men have been murdered, and in the face of mounting panic - and media hysteria - a task force has been created to catch the killer.

To his surprise, Detective Paul Hjelm, currently under investigation for misconduct after shooting a man who took the staff of an immigration office hostage, is summoned to join the new team.

But the killer has left no clues, even removing the bullets from the crime scenes, and Hjelm and his new teammates face a daunting challenge if they are to uncover the connection between the victims and catch the murderer before he kills again.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 It's all a bit mysterious... 16 juillet 2012

This almost escaped my Scandinavian crime radar but I'm jolly glad it didn't as I thoroughly enjoyed this taut and well-written thriller. This is the first of Dahl's Intercrime series to hit British shelves (previously published as `Misterioso' in reference to the killer's particular use of background music) with the follow-up `Bad Blood' due for release next year. Billed as Henning Mankell meets `The Wire', an elite group of detectives strive to uncover the identity of a killer unceremoniously bumping off some of Sweden's most influential business figures. Although ostensibly a perfectly sound police procedural, the gathering of this small band of detectives who comprise the wonderfully bland sounding A-Unit, really brings the plot together as they provide a picture perfect microcosm of race, gender, differing social backgrounds and in some cases dysfunctional personalities. This gives Dahl a free hand to play around with how these characters interact and work together as they track the killer and how their differing personalities result in moments of extreme wit (particularly in the mocking of other Scandinavian cultures) or dark pathos as some members of the team seem to have their fingers permanently on a self-destruct button. The plot is convoluted but well-structured to provide enough blind alleys to satisfy most crime readers and as normal (within the Scandinavian crime genre) there is ample opportunity for Dahl to bring in the usual socio-political perspective on Swedish society. An enjoyable debut from Dahl and definitely a series to warrant further investigation...

I've been watching out for more books translated from Arne Dahl. This is an outstanding book - complex, nuanced, gripping.

But Amazon why oh why don't you tell me ive already bought it from you with a different title

When two top-level financiers are murdered in quick succession, the Swedish authorities decide to put together a special unit to investigate. Fortunately for our hero, Paul Hjelm, he is asked to join just as he is about to be fired for shooting an immigrant during a hostage situation. As the murder toll continues to climb, the unit is following several leads. Are the crimes to do with something in the men's pasts? Or is the murderer an insane serial killer? Could the victims' membership of a Masonic-type secret society be involved? Or is the spate of murders a sign that the Russian Mafia is moving in? Apparently this book was previously published under the name Misterioso - a reference to the Thelonious Monk album of the same name.

I watched the first episode of the Arne Dahl TV series last Saturday (BBC4) and was seriously underwhelmed. I'm glad to say the book impressed me considerably more. Like most Nordic crime, there's a lot of angst in the book and dark undertones about a society that doesn't ever seem very comfortable with itself. However our hero, though of course profoundly miserable and with the obligatory unhappy home life, at least is neither a total maverick nor a drunk.

The book is well written and very well translated by Tina Nunnally, and the plotline is satisfyingly complex. Each of the leads is followed through to its conclusion and each shows us a different aspect of Swedish society. The various members of the A-unit are a bit stereotyped - the foreigner (so we can talk about questions of race), the intelligent one who wrestles with moral questions, the older one, trying to prove he's still got it, and, of course, the beautiful and complicated token female whose main purpose seems to be to allow Hjelm to indulge in some rather unnecessary sexual fantasizing. However, they are in the main developed well and we see them change from a group of strangers into a cohesive team as the book progresses.

Overall, this is an enjoyable, well plotted police procedural with elements of both mystery and thriller and a good deal better than the TV adaptation would suggest. I'll certainly be looking forward to the author's next, Bad Blood, which I believe is due out in August 2013, although apparently with a different translator.

Once again Swedish crime fiction is outstanding. The plot along with the flawed characters and witty dialogue keeps the reader wanting more. If you like Martin Beck this will appeal.

I really enjoyed the BBC adaptation, but this is even better. I'm not really into crime thrillers, but the pacing, the twists and turns (even though I knew the story) kept me riveted. I'm looking forward to Bad Blood when it's released for Kindle.
