Présentation de l'éditeur

As a child who suffered from crippling and irrational fears, Jamie was not the typical candidate to start hitchhiking alone through Europe. Yet at the age of 25, tired of a mundane life involving routines and comfort, he gave up everything and put his trust in the goodness of strangers. Told in the first person, this true story encapsulates the dizzying highs and desperate lows of what happens when a fearful individual chooses to let go of everything and travel alone through the world, sleeping under the stars and in the homes of strangers. It is a story about places, about people, about the constant internal battle that occurs during six months on the road.

This is not an epic adventure or a travel diary. This is not a story about defeating fear and being courageous. This is an internal roller coaster spread across a whole continent. This is real life, and sometimes real life is big and scary.

Biographie de l'auteur

As a terrified child, Jamie found the world somewhat overwhelming. After doing what he was told to do for the first twenty-something years of his life and obtaining a Masters in Mathematics, he decided that the fast-paced, money-orientated world of work wasn't quite for him. Since that time he has spent much time hitchhiking, cycling, and even rafting down the Danube on a homemade raft. During these journeys, he has largely relied upon the kindness of strangers who offer him a place to sleep, as well as camping out under the stars. He shares more of his adventures through his blog, Great Big Scary World: www.greatbigscaryworld.com www.facebook.com/greatbigscaryworld.com

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I'm Not Afraid of My Life and the World Anymore 1 mai 2014

When I first picked up the book, I had the limiting belief that this world is not a safe place to live in. I always believed people will only help or notice you if you have something to offer them or that you have some value to them.

This book dropped all those limiting beliefs in one strike. I'm in awe. Jamie's journey and this book is too good to be true. I didn't even know you could hitchhike, let alone embark on a hitchhiking journey.

Jamie is living an authentic life. What he writes doesn't have any friction with how he lives. It's all real, raw and authentic.
I had watched videos of his hitchhiking journey from his website. And I always wanted to know story behind it - how it happened, how he did it and all. For me, this book was the answer to that.

The book is about the goodness of strangers, which makes you realize that people are generally helpful and filled with goodness.

However, I also don't want to sell the idea that the world is a paradise and there are only good people. Of course, there are bad people, but the world isn't as scary as you think it is. People are all not bad. All people have similar dreams, hopes and fears.

I learned that living a precarious life isn't that bad. I was really anxious about my life and what I'd do with it. But after reading this book and Jamie's journey, I felt very relieved and learned to live in uncertainty - that worst case scenario isn't that bad at all.

Actually, Jamie hitchhiked and lived in worse conditions than I'd end up with, but he still enjoyed it more than anything and was happy. I think that's what matters. I felt free!

I think the value I got from this book is enormous. I'm inspired and motivated to move out of my comfort zone and face the world.

I will always keep this book within my reach so that I can read it when I'm anxious and afraid of the world.

This is uncensored, authentic and real journey of Jamie. There were lots of heart breaking moments and happy moments. I felt lots of different emotions while reading it.

I felt like I was on a journey with him. I felt the people, places and all emotions.

If you're in dilemma for buying the book, just go for it. You'll enjoy it. The value you'll receive is endless. It feels exactly like it's your journey.

While reading the book, I would wake up everyday to figure out what will happen next. Where will I end up, how will I end up, what will I do.

Thank you Jamie, for this wonderful book.

I bought this book because I absolutely love Jamie's blog, so I figured I'd enjoy reading his more extensive writing as well.
His blog posts are gems but this book still surpassed my expectations by far. It's probably one of the best books I've ever read, period, and this is coming from a guy with a Kindle containing tons of classic literature.
What makes it so good ? Well, he's insanely authentic and makes himself really vulnerable at all times without any affectation.
His beautiful personality shines through everything he writes, and the way he approaches life is inspiring beyond words (matter of fact Jamie , if you're reading this, in two weeks I'm going to hitchhike and camp / CS the entire US east coast, bringing your book as travel fuel). Secondly, he's got this particular writing style that really focuses on sensory descriptions that manage to draw you into his moment-to-moment experience in a way that's so intense that it transforms the book from a collection of paragraphs to a visceral journey. Amazing work, Jamie.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Much more than a travel memoir 14 avril 2014

The Boy Who Was Afraid of the World is such a layered read and it inspired me into taking action in my own personal life. It reads as a linear travel memoir of Jamie hitchhiking his way across Europe but there is so much more going on here. His voice is so relateable that anyone can identify with the scope of his journey and range of emotions that come up while experiencing it along with him. This is our only life to live. How do you want to live it? Constantly fearing the unknown or finding out that it will all be okay, until it is not. I loved this book on so many levels and highly recommend it!

Genuinely an inspiration, I 've just finished the book whilst travelling through Southeast Asia; a trip I never would've considered possible had I not heard and read about Jamie's stories. Thoroughly recommended for anyone who's ever romanticized about travelling freely, but has been scared to either because of costs or potential threats. I realise that may narrow the target audience significantly... But generally I'm pretty sure anyone would enjoy the book, Jamie's accomplishments as a traveller/adventurer/lifestyle-revolutionary or whatever he may be considered are equalled by his acutely detailed, vibrant storytelling. I guess 'the boy who was afraid of the world' really promoted a can do attitude, and -for me- broke down the psychological barriers of risk, in that I realised there literally is nothing stopping me from embarking on similar epic journeys, except myself. It's also made me realise that comfort is a concept that is much more of a decision than an external state, and that everything's ok if you want it to be, which I suppose is Jamies resounding message in the 'everythings always ok, until it's not' thing. Anyway, my point is, it's a flipping good book. Everyone should read it. Better than many many other books. I promise.

JBW, you are the man!

Truly an inspirational book for those seeking to try a different kind of life. This is a story of a man confronting his fears and coming out on the other side. The thing that will affect you the most when reading this is how /real/ it feels. If you have ever peeked into the journal of a friend, it is much like that. You hear about everything that might happen on a grand adventure. You can feel misery in it, yet you will also feel redemption, a trial by fire through a stormy night that lasts eons. You will love the decisions he makes, and you will hate his selfishness, yet in the end, you will see him as human. Of any book I have read that shows how a person feels, this is a truly autobiographical narrative. Brilliantly written, this story will lift you high, and kick you out from under your feet. You may cry from it, just a warning, but the tears are good, because it causes you to feel real emotion. I would recommend this to anyone who is on the edge of making the big decision to finally leave and live, as it will give you a taste of the dangers and beauty of the world.
