Présentation de l'éditeur

The Byrds – My Way
By James “Jimmi” Seiter

Description

The Byrds – My Way (Volume 4) is a first-hand description of the inner workings of the Byrds and Burrito Brothers and other entertainment events: written by James ‘Jimmi’ Seiter (Road Manager, production manager and much more for many bands and live events). It sets the record and previous assumptions straight as to what was really going on, from detailed personal, first-hand experience. He takes you on his journey which began in 1966; telling his version of events as he lived them in the form of 64 stories. It elaborates on the hard work that went on behind the scenes, to make the magic of music happen on stage in those days. The book series will recount the daily happenings of a few of America’s foremost Rock/Folk/Pop bands of the 1960’s & 1970’s as well as other production stories which the author was personally involved with along the way. This is Volume 4 there are many more to come so stay tuned and there is a website www.jimmiseiter.com which also has many historical photos.

This book is meant to be a series of 10 volumes. It begins with the Byrds, continues on to the Burrito Brothers (which was a spin off band from the Byrds) then back to the Byrds. It moves on to working with Terry Melcher, Bruce Johnston, Brian Wilson, Alice Cooper, David Cassidy, and back to the Burrito Bros. II, then into the live recording & Studio recording industries with artists. The author’s path has also crossed with many other great artists such as Stevie Wonder, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, and John Denver, to name a few.

The main aim of this book is to report the facts as they happened, through the eyes of the author. After being interviewed (and misquoted) by numerous writers over the years, then reading their interpretation of events, it became clear that people could only report what they had been told, because they were not there. The writing is presented as fact and soon the general public takes it as such: but if one tries to justify some of the shows in the day to day accounts, it becomes obvious that the authors had access to old information or preliminary schedules, not what actually happened. The ‘facts’ are simply not accurate, but because it is written, fans believe it. So yes, bits and pieces of this story have been told, but not as this author knows it. This body of work has been written purely from memory and my diaries, over a period of 20 years, directly from someone who lived it. It has been a long time coming because someone had to step up and say it out loud.

After reading the first three volumes, I expected more of the same in Vol. 4. And that is mostly what I got, with a few improvements. The country Byrds is an interesting topic, and Seiter gives a lot more information on the band members of this time, especially Gram Parsons. I'm not a great fan of Gram Parsons, but Seiter's portrayal of the man is sympathetic but balanced, and that is a positive point. Kevin Kelly, however, still sems a mystery to me, as I suspect he was to Seiter just as well. Nonetheless, very little has beejn written about Kelly, and this book certainly fills that gap. As for the rest, McGuinn is still the villain, Hillman still doesn't come across clearly, and Jimmi Seiter is still the star of the show. He doesn't seem to do anything wrong, and maybe he was as good as he says; I wouldn't know. But Seiter's self-congratulation can get a little tiresome at times. The narrative string is a little organized than in previous volumes, and often follows a logical chronological order. I don't think Seiter is particularly worried about unities of time and place, and that is his option. There is at least repetition than in previous volumes, and that's a plus. In the end, what makes this book a good read is Seiter's first-hand experience with the band and his detailed portrayal of the road manager's complex role in a band's live tours. The resumed attention to Seiter's sexual exploits is a distraction, and does nothing to endear the reader to the author. Sorry, Jimmi, but who cares how many women you bedded as a result of your job? Stick to the interesting parts. Overall, you have to approach this book as a very loose narrative with many interesting parts and, unfortunately, many boring parts as well. I think the positive aspects of the book outweigh the negative ones, but you really have to be a fan of the Byrds to enjoy the book.

Once again, Jimmi Seiter didn't let his public and pals down with the truth being told once again about life on the road and in the cities with the Byrds, Janis Joplin and other icons of the times. Don't stop now, give 'em hell Jimmi.
