3.0 étoiles sur 5 An Interesting Read... 6 janvier 2013

I expected this book to be yet another one of those books that talks about conjure in brief and then give you quite a bit of formulas! I was excited and shocked to see that this was not that book. This book teaches and talks about so much more, it gives you the material to really build a strong foundation in the work. I love the fact that Respect is shown here.

If you are looking for a book that gives you a plethora of recipes and fluff then this is not the book you will want. If you seek a book that takes you to the core of this practice, that really puts you into the spirit of things and evokes that raw primal power and shows you how to approach these things with respect/honor, then this is definitely something you will want to experience. This book makes you think a lot and promotes inner dialogue that will make you face yourself in a whole new light.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Very Nice Introduction to Conjure 15 novembre 2012

Friendly, easy to read, alternating between the mystical and the matter-of-fact, "The Candle and the Crossroads" is a nice mixed bag of personal accounts, magical and spiritual philosophy, and useful practices and techniques. You can really hear the author's "voice" in this book, as well as read what his own spirit contacts have taught him.

One of the most important aspects of the book is about "doctoring the root," or, in other words, using various items such as bones, stones, roots, herbs and so on to purify and bless your spirit, the "root" of who you are and that is the basis of what you are and what you can accomplish. All things come from the spirit, so a healthy spirit and a good relationship with that spirit is important...and this book addresses that. This is very different than most modern medicine where the symptoms of physical disease are usually what is treated, rather than going to the spiritual source of those diseases and addressing the "root" problem, so to speak.

This book makes a nice introduction to conjure work, including some info on its background, including folk traditions and beliefs. It includes insights and techniques for working with all sorts of spirits, healing work, and how to do graveyard magic properly and with respect. There is also a good checklist to help you figure out if you need to cleanse and strengthen your spirit and what issues require the most attention and how you can address those issues. One really good bit was the addition of Four Steps to "cleanse and clear" your spirit, using a nice "cleansing" bath with herbs and so on, smudging with smoke, using the flame of a candle, and finally oils to "cover" your head back up. I tried this technique and it made me feel revitalized.

The items mentioned in the book seem fairly easy to acquire (unlike in some books), such as beans, olive oil, candles, strips of cloth, spit, pennies, rum, tobacco, and so on. There is mention of various pre-made oils--the kind commonly used in conjure--but they are much more readily available today both on-line and at various stores and the author includes some info on where you can get them.

It must be mentioned that some of the Christian overtones in the book might be a slight turn-off to some pagans and witches, but its not overt and most of the spells and practices would work with a variety of paths. Some might also be a little wary of working with the "Dark Rider," ie the magic of the crossroads and the bargain, but the author covers the risks and benefits. Honestly, what powerful magic is there without a bit of both?

Generally, this is a good overall look at the philosophical and cultural underpinnings of Appalachian conjure from someone who has also has had witchcraft training and can also speak from that pov. It's a book that can help the reader understand the worldview of those who practice conjure, the basis out of which their techniques arose, and what good use those techniques can be put to.

Iam not a conjurer or witch. Iam a christian. I was not born in the mysterious witch hair trees of the bayou. I was born in the heart of DC. I not only enjoyed this book, I learned from it, highlighted it and use it every day. Mr. Foxwood takes everyone's spirituality into consideration and through his own life experiences explains several ways to deal with the readers encounters. He talks about God, spirits, stones and crystals, candles and appreciating nature. There is a particularly interesting chapter on abandonment, relationships, joy, appreciation and how to deal with struggles. This book was worth the reading and you will use it as a reference book to remind yourself of how to deal with your life.

This book changed my life. I can only offer praise for a book written from over 30 years of experience. With a heavy nod to his own Ancestral lineage, Mr Foxwood describes a little of the history as he learned it, some basic framework for Hoodoo in general and then gets into the heart of the matter, Working with Spirit. There are chapters here that describe various roots, herbs and their workings but perhaps the most valuable chapter, for this reader, was to see a 'checklist for the Health of One's Spirit'. So many ways in which to self diagnose a weakened Spiritual state, that many readers would not recognize, especially first time readers new to the subject. This book is so good, that one will not breeze through it, and if you do, I promise you ill read it again. Orion's writing style is uniquely his own, but it does show some influence from his past teacher R.J. Stewart. It is not an influence in subject matter, but rather in the depth in which the book is written. This book has a depth to it's chapters that are simple to read, yet complex at the same time. It is easy to understand, yet so much information, of high quality is relayed to the reader, in a complex web of information, that to really get the most from this book, one must take their time reading it. Much like Orion's talks and workshops, there is a WEALTH of valuable knowledge here, written by a man who has a 'working knowledge' of his subject. One of the best books I have ever purchased and I feel if you have an interest in Psycho-Social Religious Practice, from a cultural standpoint of influence, you will get a great deal from this book. It is not a beginners book by any means, unless the reader is willing to fully commit to reading the material. The longer one spends with the material, the more rewards come from the work. Highly recommended. Top Shelf work in my opinion.

This is a useful introduction to 'conjure' and 'root' work as practiced in the South. Foxwood combines rural styles (learnt from Ms. Granny, his mother's midwife) with what one might take to be 'classical' New Orleans hoodoo. He writes in a flowing, easily accessible style that further accentuates the useful information. Much, perhaps most of the book emphasizes to any conjure (or indeed, spiritual) wannabe that by far the important step in this practice is the first one, where the practitioner devises a consistent contact with their life force - "the energetic quality that we share with everything in the embodied world of nature, and the touch point between the seen and the unseen, the human and the divine....which must be awakened from sleep, conjured out of the inner cave and grown into this world." He makes it clear that conjure is not a do-it-yourself system that can be grafted onto the modern self-help attitude. Rather, 'working the root' demands discipline, grit, humility, devotion and respect - and not always in this order.

'Conjure' is a spiritual power in all things. 'Working it' is not simple. Even the relatively straightforward-seeming candle work requires elaborate ways of constructing and dressing the candle, feeding the flame and focusing the energy of the intent . Foxwood tells us about healing, spiritual cleansing, true prayer and the power of blessing. Excellent chapters on working with spirits, including the Dark Rider, Daddy Death (Papa Guede) and Daddy-Down-There, and some of the commonly employed plant spirits. Most important, however, are his insights and experience regarding the development of the *inner feeling* that is ourselves. The sense which represents the true sensory experience of our own soul and its desire to manifest in this reality. It is worth buying the book just for that.
