Présentation de l'éditeur

Even amongst the most elite performers, certain athletes stand out as a cut above the rest, able to outperform in clutch, game-deciding moments. These athletes prove that raw athletic ability doesn't necessarily translate to a superior on-field experience—it's the mental game that matters most.

Sports participation—from the recreational to the collegiate Division I level—is at an all-time high. While the caliber of their game may differ, athletes at every level have one thing in common: they want to excel. In The Champion's Mind, sports psychologist Jim Afremow, PhD, LPC, now offers the same advice he uses with Olympians, Heisman Trophy winners, and professional athletes, including:

  • Tips and techniques based on high-performance psychology research, such as how to get in a "zone," thrive on a team, and stay humble
  • How to progress within a sport and sustain excellence long-term
  • Customizable pre-performance routines to hit full power when the gun goes off or the puck is dropped

The Champion's Mind distills actionable advice into clear and concise steps for athletes looking to find confidence, concentration, and mental preparedness—the mental edge that sets champions apart.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 What sports teaches us 8 février 2014

This excellent book reminds me of Inner Excellence, another book that teaches us what we can learn from sports. The book is broken up into small mini-segments which makes the lessons to be learned digestiable and memorable. Here is a sample: detach from the outcome and be concerned only with the process(stay in the moment);reframe negative thoughts(replace "I'll never get this skill right" with "I can master this skill with continued practice and patience");be professional, especially when you smack up against challenges(do not yell, do not break the rules, do not be rude) and understand that it is a good thing to be uncomfortable(usually it shows that we are learning something new and that can hurt in the short term but pay big dividends long term). Great sections on learning from Buddhism stories and reflections by gold medial winners. I'm 60 and wish I had read a book like this at 20. But, as the expression goes, sometimes wisdom never comes, so it should not be rejected merely because it comes late.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent Training Book 27 janvier 2014

As a soccer coach, I found this book "The Champion's Mind" incredibly insightful and relevant to my work. There are several books that have helped me become a better leader and this one has helped me take my understanding of athletic motivations that much further. Ever since reading Anson Dorrance's Training Soccer Champions I've known the importance of the mind in sport. I like that Afremow's research into elite athletes has produced so many great strategies to train your brain.

I will recommend it to my players definitely, and I wouldn't be surprised if some have their hand on it already because of the buzz it has generated. The confidence, concentration, and commitment you see in the Olympians is within you too - it just might take some training techniques by Afremow to tap into them.

Dr. Afremow does a great job of taking a vast amount of important sport principles/strategies and organizing them into an easy to read, fun, and effective book for athletes of all ages and competitive levels. As a graduate student studying sport psychology and a lifelong competitive athlete I can say this book offers great insight and tips for gaining the extra edge mentally as well as physically in a wide variety of sports. I will be using the ideas of Dr. Afremow to enhance my own consulting career as well as my own personal sports participation. If you are playing competitive sports or you are just a weekend warrior trying to have as much fun as possible, this book is a must have to put you in the right mindset for success.
