Présentation de l'éditeur

Seth is a young man torn by fear and indecision. His life no longer in his hands, he fears an uncertain future where the only certainty is a life of servitude to the kingdom. Fortunately for Seth, he is not alone. His brother Garret too attends the choosing ceremony where their fates will be decided. Together the twins make their way to the castle city of Valdadore for the choosing ceremony but along the way Seth notices a strange new trend in his life. Time after time strange circumstances befall him in what others might call a coincidence, but Seth knows something else is amiss and begins mentally cataloging each new and strange event. Learning his past is all a lie, Seth begins to fear more for his future as a dark goddess vies for his service to her cause. Seths loyalties and responsibilities begin to stack up as he makes friends and allies and even falls in love, but with the choosing ceremony growing ever nearer will he be forced to flee the kingdom into a life of exile, or choose to serve the goddess who swears that only through her will he find peace.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 I tried to like it 28 janvier 2014

Once again, I find myself flabbergasted by all the glowing reviews.

The plot was derivative, but that's never stopped me from liking a story before. And it had potential.

But since the other reviews are so skewed in favor, I'll point out the (biggest) flaws so you can decide whether they're deal-breakers.

****#3 below contains spoilers; proceed with caution****

1. The author doesn't tell the story from one point of view or another. He doesn't alternate between several people, either. Instead, he describes what ALL his characters are thinking/feeling/doing from the outside. I read fantasy so I can immerse myself in a tale, and the writing style prevents that utterly.

2. Similarly, the characters' emotions are...pretty emotionless, really. They all seem to do a lot of nodding happily and glaring angrily and frowning worriedly. They're flat. There's no nuance.

3. The plot is unrealistic. (Even for a fantasy!) When a hooker is beaten up and threatened, are we really supposed to believe that a couple of kids - with absolutely no clue how to use the swords they're carrying - are going to bluff the enormous scary villain? And then said hooker is going to run off with her heroes with no clothes or money...or anything, really, besides adoration in her eyes? It's as treacley as a teenager's daydream. Or how about a young man who finds out his TWIN isn't even related to him? Should we really believe that he's going to burst into heartbroken sobbing (believing it instantly, of course) and then forget all about it two pages later?

4. The author isn't great at grammar or punctuation. I started out willing to overlook the poor word usage and the missing commas, but when he started to end declarative sentences with question marks, I gave up. "I was curious about that" is not a question! I should not have to explain that to an author!

Tell you what: I'll give this book 2 stars because I got it for free and because there's potential there. Buried, but there. The general idea was an interesting one. And should this author get some more practice - and (*ahem*) an editor - I may give his work another shot.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Hooked by the introduction, reeled in to the end! 10 novembre 2012

I usually have to get to the second or third chapter in a book before I start to get into it. The first few paragraphs don't often engage my attention other than to be a means to the part of the book that starts to get interesting. Admittedly, I often skip the introduction if it looks like it's boring or doesn't seem to pertain to the rest of the book. For some writers, the introduction seems to be an appendage to the book that might as well be left out. Just my opinion. However, I was astounded to see that Jeremy Laszlo writes with such skill and grace that I was immediately and pleasantly drawn into his story at the beginning of its introduction. I have been reading a lot of books from new and unknown authors lately. Most of them write interesting reads, but their phrasing is clunky, story structure is superficial, and the story just doesn't seem to flow. Laszlo's writing exhibits none of these. I was surprised to navigate through his writing as if I was floating along with a river that knew its course with certainty and flowed with ease. He writes with the grace of a seasoned author such as Stephen King or Jim Belcher. Beginning with the gods and their struggle, Laszlo leads the reader along a journey with a craving to find out how the human characters will play into the archetypal struggle among the gods. It is the kind of story that a reader fights to put down because it is much easier to stay up late reading as far as possible and live the next day in sleep deprivation than to set the book aside and lay awake wondering what is going to happen next. Yes, Laszlo has caused me to lose sleep, but I am readily forgiving him for it as I prepare to dive into the next installment of this series.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 don't do it. 29 janvier 2014

I was pretty excited about his book. The plot line is interesting and I think the characters could be great. There is a cross between American Gods and Lord of the rings going on. But the book could do with some serious editing. To be honest I skimmed through most of it out of frustration. Everything is explained in painstaking detail from food, to emotions, to places, clothes and armor. Ever look is treated with significance and importance. It made the book feel awkward and uncomfortable. The word choice and the time seething are not congruent. One minute I am reading M'lady and the next paragraph coriander modern day slang. I'm a fan of fiction and sci-fy but he could do so much more with these books. It's almost like they were released too soon. A little more time spent, some more direction from a solid editor and I would be up for giving the series a try. As it stands, I'm out.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A Book to Read 1 juillet 2012

For a while i had this off to the side reading other books. I finally got to this book and i got to say, i really enjoyed the book. Ive already read all three books and now waiting on the next. This first book begins with two brothers Seth and Garret as they begin their journey to find their place at the Choosing with a friend. Both brothers are different from on another as Garret dreams of being a great warrior, leader, and glory in battle. While Seth has no idea what his calling card would be. The romance in this book caught me by surprised a bit but i got over it. This was just the first book so i expected this to just be the beginning. Again i really enjoyed each book and i cant wait for the next.
