Présentation de l'éditeur

In this groundbreaking book The Circularity of Life: An Essential Shift for Sustainability, author Jane Cull encourages and inspires readers to a new way of seeing themselves and the world. The book features a unique blend of scientific principles, biological research, and relevant environmental issues backed by extensive research and real life examples.

The Circularity of Life provides a profound understanding of our co-existence on this planet. Cull showcases her understanding of how all living and non-living systems, including human beings are interconnected and mutually interdependent from a variety of perspectives. “In order for humanity to live sustainability on this planet, we must see ourselves and the world differently. We are not separate or removed from the web of life and the planetary cycles that sustain us”. It is an eye opening look into the inescapable reality that we as human beings are interconnected in a vast circular system and to sustain ourselves on this planet, we must sustain the web of life. It is a circular, systems view of life. This will be a whole new way of living and doing business globally involving new concepts, methods and technologies that sustain not only ourselves, but also the web of life.

Drawing on the work of renowned Chilean systems biologist Dr. Humberto Maturana, a pioneer in the biology of cognition, Cull uses the concept of circularity to lay the foundation for this important paradigm shift, where our living and relating becomes based on choosing social and environmental responsibility.

"The Circularity of Life" is about our deepest views on how life is arranged.
From this point of view it is philosophical, metaphysical, or ontological depending on one's academic background.
And it is extremely bold, too, as it develops a view which is not in mainstream now.

Who needs this book?
Anyone who is working on socially related problems including decision making, cognition and even quite specific areas of artificial intelligence, knowledge management, websearch engines and many others.

Because thousands of scientists have been wasting their time looking for the Mind (conscienceless, language) models for the last 50 years and they still are very far away from understanding the basics of Mind.
The major reason for it: their view is clogged by the mainstream basic understanding of human reasoning, Human Mind.
They need a switch of understanding of how Humans think.
This book, "The Circularity of Life", provides exactly that: the basics of how to start viewing life differently.

The good news is that you do not have to completely deny your current ontologies and swear only by a new approach. The scientific fact is that we normally apply all the views that we have ever come across throughout our lives; yet the bigger the library of approaches and theories you master is the easier you kickstart your creative breakthroughs in finding fresh solutions; the wider your horizon is the easier it is to abandon your current box of thinking patterns.

So, start reading and understanding the book right now: Jane Cull did a very good job in rendering the idea in the best possible way; adding this view to your panoply will result in a breakthrough in your current research.

P.S. Please, share what you think about the book and your findings: your personal input will trigger another person's understanding because circularity of thinking is part of circularity of life in general.

Well written, lucid and elegant application of Humberto Maturana's work to sustainability.

To quote from Maturana preface to the book: "this is a beautiful book, a book for people who love living and who want to recover the conscious awareness of belonging to a natural world that enables us to live."

It is limited only by the limitations of that work itself.

When I first read this book a few years ago I was struck by the forward-looking nature of the ideas it contains and the spate of new books since then about the worsening ecological and psychological problems the world is facing only serves to reinforce this view. To have it now in a Kindle version is very welcome indeed.
Amongst the new books such classics as The Ascent of Humanity by Charles Eisenstein have further emphasised the fundamental problem that human beings have separated ourselves from one another and from nature. Other new books have explained the urgent need for interconnectedness in terms of the rapidly expanding field of social neuroscience. Few authors, however, have anchored these important ideas in the basic biology in the way that Jane Cull has done. She is one of a relatively small group of people around the world who really appreciated the significance of the paradigm shift in biology that came from Humberto Maturana in particular and has applied this to correcting the unsustainability of our current ways of doing things.
To appreciate the beauty of the biosphere in the circularity of life is our greatest incentive to bring about constructive change. As Maturana and Ximena Dávela write in the Preface to this new edition, we only see this beauty because of what all living things have in common - the same operational coherence that also creates our view of the world we live in. Honouring this operational coherence we realise that we have much more in common than there are differences between us - as humans and as a part of nature itself. We give life to whatever we love and, in so doing, we receive the life we need to sustain us and make our existence here worthwhile.
Subjects such as human identity through separation or interconnectedness, our misplaced desire for certainty and the necessity for trust - its social and environmental consequences - are the issues we most need to address today and they are laid out in this book.
I think this is an important book and I trust it will be widely read and so play its part in enriching our human existence.

sustainabilityi is on everyone's lips but few people have been able to show a way to creates truly sustainable world this book provides us with this important possibility she has expanded the work of the biologists,Maturana and the late Varela on the biology of life to show how we humans are a part of the complex, natural global system and that we can choose to move from attempting to control it and denying our biological dependence to living in interdependence with the worlds natural cycles and rhythms. Along the way she describes how human interactions also change when we adopt this approach and she gives an account of sustainable projects currently happening around theworld that meet her criteria. I thoroughly recommend this book to everyone who is at all concerned about the humancondition. Colin MacKenzie.
