Peter Watts' continues to pithily render fascinating ideas in wonderful prose. I hadn't read Blindsight for some time so this piece more or less had to stand on its own; it did. Agree it leaves one wanting full book-length development. More please!

It's a gripping and fast read for fans of hard sci-fi. It takes up 14 years after the events of "Blindsight" and details a few days in the life of Siri Keetons long suffering father the eponymous "Colonel."

It's important to note this is a short story and not a full length novel.

One of the best writers out there. Some (most?) of the science fiction I've been exposed to lately seems to be written at a pretty low level. Not this dude! The science of his near future is out there - but grounded in reasonable/believable way. Check out the footnotes in some of the other novels.

This is another Tor.com short story that show-cases characters or setting from an upcoming novel. In this case, I think it is Echopraxia. I don't know whether the characters in this short story appear in the novel, but I'd be surprised if they didn't because the "Colonel" - Jim Moore - seems to be central to whatever is happening.

In this story, humanity appears to approaching the singularity in weird and disquieting ways. It seems that the technology of linking human brains has allowed for the development of "hive" minds that are smarter and completely different from human beings. The story opens with a hive mind attacking a sulfur-dioxide atmosphere injection plant in South America, for no clear reason. The Colonel is involved with stopping that high tech/low tech terrorist attack. The story then follows up with a discussion between the Colonel and a representative from the "good" - we think - hive mind of "bicamerals" - who are organized like monasteries in the ecologically degraded future. The Bicamerals have information about the space ship the Colonel's son was sent on to investigate an alien species that "surveyed" the Earth two decades prior to the story. Then, the Colonel deals with his deal/alive wife who has entered "Heaven" where she "lives" in a virtual reality while the corporation that runs "Heaven" uses the spare processing power of her not dead brain.

We're not in Kansas, any more.

We don't really get a plot or a story in this short story. Instead we get a glimpse of a bizarre, and maybe plausible, future. If that kind of thing interests you and will hook you into the novel, then go for it.

I was interested. I thought the writing was crisp. I liked the main character, albeit I didn't know what really was happening, which is why this book is a "taste," not the meal itself.

It's impressive how much story telling Peter Watts can accomplish in such a short format. All the more excited now for Echopraxia.
