Revue de presse

Charles Schulz was an American treasure - an artist, philosopher, and keen observer of human life (BILL CLINTON)

It's impossible to think of another popular art form that reaches across generations the way the daily comic strip does... at the pinnacle of that long tradition, there was Charles Schulz (Seattle Times)

The world of Peanuts is a microcosm, a little human comedy for the innocent reader and for the sophisticated (UMBERTO ECO)

Charles Schulz was, plain and simple, a great artist and philosopher . . . But most importantly, he teaches all ages that if you can learn to laugh at the things that cause you the most pain you will be the strongest of all. Peanuts: a real way of life (JOHN WATERS)

Republishing Peanuts in one gorgeous volume after another is really the first time we can truly take a step back, appreciate Schulz's work as a whole and ultimately wrap our arms around the accomplishment of Charles Schulz. Sometimes, happiness is a warm book (Huffington Post)

These timely re-issues illustrate not only the skill and subtle brilliance of his work but also the origins of the form beyond simple merriment (Sunday Times)

All sorts of important writers have marvelled at the glorious simplicity of [Schulz's] draftsmanship and his unerring jokecraft, all underpinned by a quiet melancholy and stoicism . . . by some miracle, the entire Peanuts oeuvre is gradually being republished in this country, by Canongate . . . in lavishly appointed hardback . . . Unlike almost everything you read as a child, they are actually better than you remember them (Spectator)

As essential as pop texts get (The Onion)

The Complete Peanuts confronts us afresh with what a brilliant, truly modern and totally weird idea it was to create a comic strip about a chronically depressed child (Time) --Bill Clinton --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Relié .

Présentation de l'éditeur

In this latest collection, romance is in the air. Charlie Brown's attempt at flirting in class sends him to the school nurse, while Linus is thwarted in his attempt to woo 'Lydia' of the many names. Other storylines include Snoopy's sojourn in the hospital for a hockey-related knee injury, Sally's bumpy career as a playwright, and Snoopy's 'kiss-and-tell' book. Plus Rerun, Spike, Peppermint Patty and Marcie . . . and Snoopy's feathered Beagle Scouts! --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Relié .

"Still crazy after all these years." 21 avril 2013

Doonesbury's Gary Trudeau writes the introduction to Volume 19 of the series the Complete Peanuts. The 1987-1988 edition still demonstrates just how creative Charles Schulz was as the storylines remain fresh and entertaining. Lucy's young brother Rerun begins to play a more significant role which carries into the next 90's.

Linus continues his love affair of Lydia. Snoopy is joined in the trenches by his brother Spike and in later panels pens a kiss and tell book.

Beginning in early 1988 (February 9) the normal daily format changed for the first time. Some dailies were three, two, or one panels. Even some of the four panel strips varied in size of box (not sure about the correct terminology). This shows that even at this relatively late date, Charles Schulz continued to innovate.

I continue to marvel at how much I enjoy the Peanuts saga, even at my advancing age. I was four when these started, but by the time I was a teenager I was hooked and have remained so since.

I highly recommend the 1987-1988 (Volume 19) Complete Peanuts. Happy reading.

Peace to all.

More & More Goodness 23 mai 2013

I am running out of adjectives to describe how much I enjoy Peanuts and these collections which arrive every six months or so. These are the strips that graduated me from high school and sent me off to college (if I'm going to date myself). As always, they are a great pleasure. I particularly enjoyed Linus' continued "relationship" with Lydia (if that is her real name). It just goes to show that Charlie Brown wasn't the only one who struggled with a girl he liked. In any case, these comics are no struggle. They are a continued joy. I can't wait until the next one.
Trudeau's introduction is recycled from 1999 4 juin 2013

One of the main raisons d'etre for the Complete Peanuts series is that in the past, Peanuts reprint books have generally done a poor job of systematically reproducing ALL the strips that Schulz drew. In most if not all volumes in the Complete Peanuts series, there have been some strips that had not seen the light of day since their initial appearance in the newspaper, and the earlier volumes in particular have had a large number of such "never-before-reprinted" strips. However, it so happens that the Peanuts Collector series of reprint books did an excellent job of systematically reprinting the strips from the time period covered by this particular volume (1987-1988), so if you have the Peanuts Collector books, then the only strips you might not recognize here are those from December 1988, after "Could You Be More Pacific?" left off and before "Being a Dog is a Full-Time Job" picked up. That's not to say that it's not worth buying this volume anyway; one of my favorite Peanuts strips, in which Marcie alludes to Yeats's poem "The Second Coming" ("slouching towards Bethlehem"), falls right in the middle of that lacuna.

The reason that I'm giving a rating of four stars instead of five is that the introduction by Garry Trudeau was not written specifically for the occasion. It is a word-for-word recycling of a piece that Trudeau wrote for the Washington Post back in 1999. Evidently Fantagraphics is having some trouble finding celebrities to write original introductions. Perhaps it's not their fault, but I can't help but be disappointed not to have someone's fresh take on the strips in this book. They deserve better.

Schultz is always a winner! 7 juin 2013

I am a Snoopy fanatic, and his pals are just wonderful too. Schultz doesn't need recommending, the name is enough. Superb satire and philosophy. A man of great insight into human nature. Simply brilliant!

Have the whole set so far. Hope that if I buy others from you that I can get slipcases for each two issues? Like for 1987-1988/1989-1990.
