Yes, the details of the book can seem very intimidating (especially in those early, sleep deprived weeks). But once you get to grips with them, they are incredibly useful. And my babies genuinely seemed to thrive on them.
With my first baby, I read the book and thought (whilst still pregnant) that it seems ridiculously rigid and prescriptive. And in the early weeks with my first baby, I decided to be led by my baby's demands. Only I quickly discovered that it wasn't that easy to tell what those demands were (He seemed hungry...but hadn't I just fed him? He seemed to have had enough sleep so why was he still so grizzly? And why was he so colicky?). In the end, (in slightly hysterical desperation...!) at eight weeks, I switched to Gina's routines. It was almost an overnight transformation. My baby was relieved, I was relieved, my husband was relieved. Happy household again!
And so with babies number two and three we followed Gina too. By number three, I had to be a little more flexible with where the naps happened (in the car on the school run etc). But I stuck to the key points like wake up and bed times, the late evening feed, the big lunch time nap, and we have another happy baby.
I would highly recommend
