"Filled with adventure and clever dialog and featuring a pair of not-quite-heroes whose loyalties to each other provide them with their greatest strength, this epic fantasy showcases the arrival of a master storyteller... A winning debut for fantasy lovers." (Library Journal on Theft of Swords)

"Hair-raising escapes, flashy sword fights, and faithful friendship complete the formula for good old-fashioned escapist fun." (Publishers Weekly on Theft of Swords)

"A whirlwind of twists, earth-shattering surprises and deadly betrayal." (Literary Magic)

Two men who hate each other. One impossible mission. A legend in the making.
Hadrian Blackwater, a warrior with nothing to fight for is paired with Royce Melborn, a thieving assassin with nothing to lose. Together they must steal a treasure that no one can reach. The Crown Tower is the impregnable remains of the grandest fortress ever built and home to the realm's most prized possessions. But it isn't gold or jewels that the old wizard is after, and if he can keep them from killing each other they become a legendary team.

This is where it all begun. This is where you understand how a deep bond was forged. You don't yet understand the necessity behind the bonding and the forces at work unless you've already read Theft of Swords, Rise of Empire and Heir of Novron (this is where I stop to strongly suggest a read of the Riyria books in their order of publication).

I was so glad to be back to this world. Glad to be back to Royce and Hadrian. They are 2 of my most favorite characters.

I'm not one who can write clever reviews. I'm just one who "feels". With Royce and Hadrian, I always feel a lot.

Hence the 5 stars.

Is it necessary to add that I recommend this read ?

In chronologial order this is the first book of the Riyria Revelations and I can tell that the author is finding his stride. I'm already a huge fan of the series and I think this one is the best by far. The other books have hinted at how the infamous pair of Royce and Hadrian met but this really fleshes it out for you. And even though I already knew what happened I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book. I stayed up way too late so I could finish it the day I got it because there just wasn't a good enough place to stop that would have allowed me to sleep. I highly recommend this book and series to anyone in need of a good fantasy adventure. my only complaint, and it isn't even a complaint, but I suppose I wish it was longer. I love Royce and Hadrian and I really enjoy Michael J. Sullivan's work, so I would've liked to prolong the adventure, though I look forawrd to the next installments!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Riyria Love 7 août 2013

I discovered Mr. Sullivan earlier this summer thanks to reddit, and from the get go I loved his Revelations series. I might apply the word voraciously to how quickly I went through those books. Needless to say, I was pleased to learn I would only have to wait till early August to read The Crown Tower, and I am happy to report it reads as wonderfully as Revelations. No seriously, I read it in a few hours after pulling the whole "just a chapter" thing. His writing style is hard to put down. He combines humor, fun, and darker things in an amazingly readable way. This book entertained me, moved me, made me thoughtful about both the book's internal world, and the real world.

For those who have read Revelation: this book has the same feel without feeling like a rehash of those book. I was actually surprised at how different the character's personalities were- they were all definitely recognizable, but they felt younger, and untried. The developing relationship between Hadrian and Royce really felt perfect knowing how they turn out much, much later. I was happy to see Gwen make a large appearance, and I think her story line is one of the things I am most looking forward to next. It should be really cool to see how a lot of the threads that came together in Revelations started.

For those who haven't read Revelations: You can jump right in with this book, you don't need to have read the earlier, but later books first. I don't think reading this book would change how you view the story of the later books, either, but I haven't reread them, yet.

The only concern I can muster is that sometimes I wished the pacing slowed down and maybe offered a little more description of the people/world. It really didn't bother me much, but I feel like I have to offer some balance to the unremitted praise.

I highly recommend this book, and this author. It's an excellent, fast-paced read.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A great beginning to this new series... 4 1/2 Stars 10 août 2013

"The Crown Tower" is the first book in 'The Riyria Chronicles' by author Michael J. Sullivan. This Kindle e-book was a 717 Kb download (approx. 377 reading pages) and sold for $8.89 at the time of writing this review. The book also includes a brief excerpt of the second book in the series, "The Rose and the Thorn", due out in Sept, 2013.

Spoilers (general theme)

This book deals with the first encounters between Hadrian Blackwater and Royce Melborn... a relationship initially filled with suspicion, distrust and a huge amount of animosity.

End Spoilers

Some Pros and Concerns...

The Pros
1.) well written and deftly told in the professional style that is readily apparent in all of the books of this series.

2.) a nice sense of pace and timing... important pieces of info were released in proper sequence and at intervals that kept the story moving along while maintaining the suspense.

3.) map... there is a very good map with markings for topographical features and the names of major places. (See Concerns below)

4.) I thought the author did a terrific job in highlighting both Hadrian's and Royce's initial character traits. Hadrian with a degree of youthful naivety and innocence and Royce's uncaring ruthlessness. Two clashing personality traits that were slowly and often painfully softened by the books end.

5.) some interesting confrontations between our heroes and several other groups and individuals. These moments are tense, exciting and typical of Michael J. Sullivan skill with prose for action-based scenes.

6.) bantering conversation... because this tale documents their initial meetings, it took a while for them to develop their kibitzing style of repartee... a verbal style that was a main feature of their relationship in previous books. This unique camaraderie was one of the main traits that I believe has made these two individuals so popular with readers.

7.) several surprising twists and turns that tended to make for an intriguing and unpredictable tale.

8.) a satisfactory conclusion for this book with several open threads that will be followed up in the sequel to come.

A couple of concerns...
1.) the map... unfortunately the map was quite dark on the Kindle reader making smaller print almost illegible... enlarging the map only made the smaller print more indistinct. Really a minor issue and I assume most likely due to the the Kindle formatting process.

2.) Gwen's story.... unfortunately I found her story was rather predictable and in all honesty, a little dragged out. As I continued to read her tale, I must admit to skimming many of her chapters. It was an area that left me wondering why the author spent as much time and effort on this section as he did. My main reason for deducting a half a Star from the rating.

Impression:
Overall, a well written tale featuring the rocky and turbulent beginning of Hadrian's and Royce's partnership. And because of this, the usual bantering conversational style that was the essence of their relationship in the Riyria series, was missing in the first three quarters of this book. Yet despite this absence, this was still a great tale filled with suspense, action and unexpected developments.

As it is... 4 1/2 Stars

4.0 étoiles sur 5 The Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid of Fantasy!! 16 août 2013
Par W. Adams - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché
THE BUTCH CASSIDAY AND THE SUNDANCE KID OF FANTASY!

For all of you familiar with the Riyria Revelations books, Hadrian Blackwater and Royce Melborn are the Dynamic Duo of fantasy: Hadrian the great warrior with three swords for any occasion and Royce the dark, mysterious assassin waiting to put a dagger in you. Two partners who are as polarly opposite in their personality and outlook on life as in their styles of fighting. No matter their differences however, these two night and day characters are the most dedicated of partners and friends.

But how could they have ever gotten past these issues to form a partnership called Riyria?

This is the story Michael J. Sullivan sets out to tell in The Crown Tower, and he accomplishes it with a flair long time readers have come to expect from him. The tale he pens is one of those very rare prequels: a stand alone story which - while tipping its hat so subtly to the older novels - never fails to understand it is a story unto itself. Indeed, Hadrian, Royce and Gwen grabbed the readers attention from the first, drawing them along involuntarily in the turbulence of their story as all three are inevitably drawn together.

Naturally, our story takes place before the events of The Theft of Swords, which is the first set of books set in the world of Riyria. Here, Hadrian Blackwater is a young man, still holding onto his youthful naivety yet having seen and done bloody deeds that even he refuses to recall. Our youthful optimist has wandered over half the world since he left his father's blacksmith shop as a youth, eager to find glory and a worthy cause that his unvanquishable sword skills could be used for. Yet, none of the glory or gold satisfied Hadrian: they made him feel hollow inside actually. So when word reaches him about his father back home, something breaks within him, and he finds himself drawn back to his roots, hoping to find some epiphany about his future. Perhaps some sign as to where or what he should do with the remainder of his life - and with his only skill: killing people.

That is where Royce comes in. I cannot tell you how these two meet without giving away spoilers and ruining the surprise, but suffice it to say that Mr. Sullivan crafts this in the perfect way. A set up which not only enlivens what had been a slow story to that point, but also forces our Dynamic Duo to interact with one another for all our entertainment.

Naturally, afer meeting and attempting to clear up their differences, Hadrian and Royce find themselves drawn together whether they like it or not. Their mutual goal to plan and conduct a heist that is so impossible that no one has ever tried it! And that is absolutely insane for two strangers such as them to attempt - especially since they absolutely despise one another!

I know the fact Hadrian and Royce hate one another came as no surprise to anyone right?

Who did not see that coming?

These two are oil and water, even in the later books when they have been partners for years, so most certainly they would not enjoy each others company at first meeting. But Mr. Sullivan does something wonderful in this book: he actually takes the time to explain why each of them behave and believe as they do. He then forces each character to confront those same facts about the other and work through their revulsion of the others' life view. This sets up interesting and hilarious scenes where Royce and Hadrian are bickering, insulting and threatening to murder one another. They argue about everything, even when death is knocking at their door, and each constantly wonders how someone as idiotic as the other person could have survived so long without someone killing them. They are the only duo since Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid I have ever seen carry this type of quarreling and cooperation relationship so far and make this entertaining. (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a great, classic western for those who don't know. Go rent it today and understand what I mean!)

And we cannot forget Gwen, the mysterious brothel owner, who gradually plays a bigger and bigger role in Revelations. Here we get to understand her life up until she met Hadrian and Royce, how she became a prostitute, and the role she played in Hadrian and Royce actually becoming Riyria. While I can't say Gwen's story broke new ground in storytelling, it was well written, eye-opening, and added another layer to this elegant lady who always brightened the pages with her appearance in Revelations. For those reasons, it was a very enjoyable part of the overall prequel.

As long time readers already know, Mr. Sullivan has that innate ability to create a page-turner, and The Crown Tower is no different. It is a great read for those who have experienced the wonderful Riyria Revelations and those who have not. The novel has it all: excitement, hilarity, mystery, fighting, and romance. What else could anyone ask for out of a fantasy novel? Nothing. So just go buy the book already, you know you want to.

I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley in return for an honest review. The review you have read is my opinion, and mine alone. Royce and Hadrian have not visited me and attempted to bribe or beaten me into writing this.

And if they had, I doubt I could really mention it so . . .forget I said anything. *Whispers* Royce hears everything.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Welcome Back to Riyria 1 septembre 2013

Just to let you know up front I am a huge fan of The Riyria Revelations and of the author himself. Over the years i have talked to both Mr. Sullivan and his wife a few times via fantasy web site message boards and knowing the type of people that they are has only made my enjoyment of Mr. Sullivan's writings increase.

I was so excited to hear of this new Riyria Chronicles series being released because I feel in love with Royce, Hadrian, and Gwen in the original series The Riyria Revelations. I really don't want to give any plot details away that might spoil your enjoyment of the books but I will say reading this book reminded me of going to a class reunion. You walk in going I think I know him or she looks familiar but after thiry minutes you feel like you just saw all of these people yesterday.

Being able to hold all these chatacters that Michael has made me love again was pure joy. The real pleasure came from reading this book and finding out what made them who they are. if you're out there reading this and thinking I really would like to find a fantasy series that is fast paced, with plenty of action, that will stay with me long after I have finished the book then welcome to The Riyria Chronicles.

Sometimes you just have to have a little faith. Years ago i read an article about George R.R.Martin being at a book show in town and I thought his books sound interesting and I gave them a try which led to countless hours of enjoyment. I think the Riyria novels will create the same thing for you and as a bonus the original series The Riyria Revelations is already complete. Please come discover Riyria and see why so many of us love these books. You'll be glad you did.
