However, this is not your typically Sleeping Beauty tale and do not expect it to be based on Disney's animated film Sleeping Beauty.
This story is a far cry from the animated feature that most know and love. This is the story of Maleficent and how she came to be, why she did what she did and how her interactions with Aurora changed her destiny.
I want to make perfectly clear that The Curse of Maleficent and Maleficent are two different books. The Curse of Maleficent is written in the vibe of a fairy tale from different perspectives for families to enjoy . Maleficent is based off the live action movie and has a much darker theme than this book. So be warn when choosing which one to read to your children as The Curse of Maleficent is for younger readers while Maleficent is gear more towards an older audience of children.
The Curse of Maleficent is written in third person and from three different view points; Robin (a fairy), Knotgrass (also a fairy) and Aurora. I will not go into specifics so as not to ruin the story but these three characters' view the story of Maleficent from an outside perspective and show how Maleficent's actions effect them. The story is beautifully told from these three characters who are well-rounded characters. The story is fast pace and fill of fantasy. The illustrations of the book will delight any child or fan of Disney's new take on the story of Sleeping Beauty. Do not expect it to be like the animated film.
I will hope anyone who reads this story will enjoy it as much as I have.
I've been obsessed with this movie ever since I heard it was coming out. Been buying everything Maleficent related I can find, so when I found out the movie had (two) books coming out, I had to get them! At first I was hesitant to read it, I didn't want the movie spoiled for me (although I kidna did) but in the end I figured..."oh well, once the movie comes out I won't want to read it anyway!" So I read the book(s)! I'm so glad I did...now I can't wait even more for the movie to come out!
If you're not obsessed like me, I would say just buy one or the other, since they both pretty much tell the same story, however there are some slight differences between the two books.
For instance, this book has artistic depictions of Maleficent and Aurora between chapters, while the other book has none. I found that the other book was slightly more detailed in it's telling of the story, where as this one was not. Each have their own pros and cons, it's just up to you to decide which you prefer! (Or get both like I did!)
As for the story, it's a great read! Not at all how I expected the story to go, but very excited! The detail is a little lacking, as if they just copied the screenplay...however with a little imagination that can be fixed. Besides, the movie comes out in less than a month anyway, so we'll get to see then, just how close this book comes to the actual story. Personally, if the story follows the book exactly, I will be SO happy!
My only concern is that the die-hard Maleficent fans will be slightly disappointed with how they portrayed this "Mistress of all evil." As for me, I'm already waiting to pre-order the movie on Blu-Ray combo pack! Lol <3
If you have enjoyed the film, inside this book there's a kind of a light version of the story being presented with some cool and appealing illustrations.
And for the price of the book as of this time, it surely is highly recommendable to be on a collection.
