Présentation de l'éditeur

"The story is brilliantly executed... Nath’s biggest success is the sustained atmospheric tension that he creates somewhat effortlessly."
- Little Interpretations

"A haunting and bittersweet novel that stays with you long after the final chapter – always the sign of a really well-written and praiseworthy story. It would also make an excellent screenplay."
- Historical Novels Review - Editor's Choice, Feb 2011

Nazi-occupied Aquitaine, 1943: A beautiful young woman is found murdered in the shadow of the Bergerac Prefecture. Auguste Ran, Assistant Chief of Police, suspects Brunner, a German Security Police Major, of the crime. The more Auguste investigates, the more obsessed he becomes with bringing down the seemingly untouchable Brunner.

Auguste begins to realise he has been conveniently ignoring the Nazi atrocities going on around him, and understands too late the human cost of his own participation in the internment of the local Jewish population.

Driven by conscience and struggling with his Catholic religious beliefs, his actions start to put his own family at risk. Harbouring the daughter of his lifelong Jewish friend Pierre, they are forced into a desperate trek towards neighbouring Switzerland, pursued all the way by the German Sicherheitspolizei.

'The Cyclist' is the first in Fred Nath's series of World War II dramas. The adventures continue in 'Farewell Bergerac' (available now) and 'Francesca Pascal' (coming soon).

I am a great fan of spy thrillers set in the second world war. I particularly like Eric Ambler books from yesteryear and the more recent Alan Furst books. The latest Furst is not out until July so I was looking for something to fill the gap. `The Cyclist' was a real find. He builds atmosphere and gives you the feel of France during World War II. The characters are interesting and plausible and there is a good story line. I have looked for more Fred Nath books but haven't found one yet. I would certainly read his other work.

I was drawn to this book because it reminded me of stories my favorite teacher used to tell me about how his father escaped from Poland on a bicycle, just ahead of German occupation forces. What I found in this book was an enthralling tale written with such finesse that every line was a pleasure.

For all of the drama and the suspense, it is the characters that draw you into this book and hold you. They are so human in all of their strengths and weaknesses, that you ache for them, and sigh in relief when they escape a close call. By the end of the book, you know that under other circumstances, this could be you. And you can only hope that you would negotiate such difficulties half so well.

Historical novelists always take some liberties with historical reality. This author is no exception. Here we have a captain outranking a major, and a major as the equivalent of a colonel. Himmler is described as "short and fat:" he was 5'9" and probably weighed 150-160: perhaps the author confused Himmler with Goering. "Calvary" is rendered as "Calgary." The city north of Lyon is "Dijon," not "Digoin." Hitler's title is misspelled. The round-trip Bergerac to Lyon to Bergerac is made to seem an easy drive, leaving the protagonist with time to work in the office both before and after: but that trip, one way, takes over 5 hours in a modern car on modern roads. Routes of travel outlined in the book make no sense geographically. And the idea that Himmler described the "final solution," aloud, to a gathering of FRENCH police officers in 1943 is absurd. The "final solution" was a state secret, and was not even discussed in Nazi circles except via euphemisms and circumlocutions.

The transformation of the protagonist from collaborator to resistant occurs in the space of a day, takes up a page of text, and is hardly believable. Deeply muddled Catholicism obtrudes through much of the text. The story is populated by stock, mono-dimensional characters: the INNOCENT girl, the WICKED Nazi, the GENEROUS abbot, the AMBITIOUS assistant, THE LOVING wife, and so on.

The writing, while generally grammatical, is pedestrian.

I have read a fair number of WW2 novels, but none that bring the plight of the average citizen to such a fine point. You hear of the jews, you hear of the nazi criminals, but what of the french policeman asked to decide between morals and survival.
This is the first novel of its sort which makes me say, 'There, but for the grace of God, go I'.

The opening, set in modern day, struck me as awkward, but after haveing read the rest, I came to believe it was deliberate. It so wonderfully contrasts the current attitude with the reality they were facing. The past was written so elegantly I couldnt help but take each tragedy personally as I made the characters my friends.

Well written. Great story. This time in history was unique for the time and very difficult to comprehend. Very hard to know what to believe and how to respond because of the fear of personal reprisals.
