Présentation de l'éditeur

A guide to cycling the Danube Cycle Way from Donauschingen in Bavaria to Budapest. The Danube Cycle Way has become the most popular holiday cycle touring route in mainland Europe. It has magnificent scenery, fascinating places to visit throughout its length and a wide cultural diversity. It is not unusual to sit in a wayside bar and hear seven different languages being spoken at the same time, but not one of them is likely to be English. It is high time this changed. This guide aims to introduce the Danube Cycle Way not only to keen long-distance cyclists but also to people who have never experienced the joys of this kind of journey. The fact that the majority of the route is on dedicated, clearly signed cycle tracks means that it is perfect for whole families to enjoy. Although the guide divides the length of the cycle way into 20 suggested days, a plentiful amount of low-priced accommodation throughout the entire length of the route means that each day's journey can be tailored to cyclists' needs. The way is almost free of hills, includes visits to monasteries, castles, museums, and ancient cities as well as picturesque villages, and provides adventurous cyclists with a month's sheer pleasure. It is there, waiting to be enjoyed.

This is not a "how to do it" book; it's a "how I did it" book. It provides minimal route descriptions, primitive maps, and an unengaging shopping list of attractions en route: church tower, check; monastery, check; old bridge, check. I bought it with the idea of planning a ride a year or two from now and found it largely useless. It's a long way from the comprehensive cycling guides offered by other publishers for different parts of Europe.

If you are actually riding the route you'll want to buy proper maps in any case, but don't count on getting even a vague sense of the route from the ones here, which, although printed in full colour, simply connect the dots of the towns and villages on the route: there's no topographic info, no information on the surrounding area, and no street names for the few town maps.

The book includes some pretty pictures, some helpful information on the facilities available in each town on the route, and a little advice on navigating the larger cities. But it won't replace a more comprehensive guidebook and maps. I'll be looking for the German-produced Bikeline guides instead.

The "full kit list" at the back is a hoot. British cyclists of a certain age may agree that the essential items are the mini electric kettle, the teabags, and the bottle-cage thermos, but others will be mystified by those other items: what is Swarfega? Isostar? E111? Pertex? What's a dog-dazer? Why list cycling glasses, spectacles, AND sunglasses? How many riders will be inclined to pack a Dictaphone? However, it's probably wise to follow the author's example and take along "clothes."

Some subtle humor here-and-there where you least expect it.

The breakdown of smaller towns along the route was helpful,
and useful for trip planning.

This book is a very helpful guide book if you want to do a bicycle trip on your own along this international bike path that goes from southern Germany to Hungary, following the Danube River.

Nice detailed turn-by-turn for the Danube cycleway. Have not made the trip yet, so can't verify the accuracy, but Mr. Higginson has a nice writing style, is detailed and informative. I especially appreciate that he is able to make a turn-by-turn guidebook read very much like a good book, which is to say that the narrative and directions flow very naturally. At the same time, by the use of text formatting, its easy to pick out the pertinent information. The color photos are also quite well done. The book is written from a British perspective, however, that has caused no problems at all for this American reader. Just don't expect any "how to get there from here" advice which would be applicable to North Americans.
