Revue de presse

'It is always a pleasure to read Aline Templeton, but THE DARKNESS AND THE DEEP must surely be her best book to date. Aline's characters are so beautifully drawn . . .' (J Wallis Martin)

'This is a book for a long train journey or a wet weekend with no other demands, the better to immerse oneself in the strongly-delineated characters, complex plotting and rich allegory: a really satisfactory read.' (Mystery Women)

'Loved it. She has become the crime czar of the Scottish small town!' (Val McDermid)

'In fictional terms the combination of domesticity and detection is very appealing, especially when it comes with a detailed, vivid portrayal of a complete society . . . an interesting, atmospheric and - I predict - televisual series.' (Literary Review)

'Loved it' (Val McDermid)

'It is always a pleasure to read Aline Templeton, but THE DARKNESS AND THE DEEP must surely be her best book to date. Aline's characters are so beautifully drawn that turning the final page is almost like bidding old friends farewell. However, I am sure I will meet the residents of Knockhaven again, and hopefully, that will be in the not-too-distant future.' (J Wallis Martin)

An unalloyed pleasure - an intelligent, character-driven crime novel. (Andrew Taylor on COLD IN THE EARTH)

'A fascinating cast of possible villains is explored in this skilfully plotted and well-paced novel, each vividly described, entirely believable and never sliding into the usual parodies of country folk. But its real strength is DI Marjory Fleming, both tough and vulnerable as she struggles to track down the killer . . . Templeton moves easily between laughter and tragedy . . . This book is a delight, from its leisurely start to the moving and unexpected finish. Even better, it's the second in a series, so there's more pleasure to come.' (Guardian)

Aline Templeton has been producing quietly intelligent, carefully plotted thrillers for years. Templeton creates a tight, convincing band of characters and has the ability to spin her story beyond immediate events to paint a picture of a small rural community in crisis. She is good at managing her plot and revealing details slowly. She has demonstrated that, just when we thought Scotland was saturated with detectives, a strong woman can elbow her way in and find a unique niche. (Scotsman on COLD IN THE EARTH)

A compelling read. (Margaret Yorke on COLD IN THE EARTH)

Templeton crafts a nifty plot amid the dour and inward-looking denizens of a Fenland village (Scotsman on LAST ACT OF ALL)

Templeton has wit, a strong narrative sense and a dab hand with atmospherics (Literary Review on LAST ACT OF ALL)

Aline Templeton has a wondrously deft, unpretentiously beautiful style, full of good things (Hampstead & Highgate Express on THE TRUMPET)

This astringent tale of psychological suspense set in a remote Welsh valley uses the landscape with an almost visionary splendour (The Times on NIGHT AND SILENCE)

Présentation de l'éditeur

The wreck of the Knockhaven lifeboat with the loss of all three of its crew is a hard blow for the small Scottish town. But it's harder still when DS Tam MacNee discovers that it isn't simply a tragic accident. Was it just the act of vandals, bored in a fishing port stricken with unemployment? Could it be linked to the drugs trade which has taken root in the locality? Or is there someone who, in their determination to kill one person, is callous enough to take two innocent lives? And if so, who is the intended victim? As DI Marjory Fleming and her team investigate multiple murders, with a whole community hungry for justice, the pressure - professional and personal - is on.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Solid second book in a series 20 juillet 2013

This book is the second in the Marjorie Fleming series (a British police procedural) by Aline Templeton. The characters are well-drawn and believable. The writing style and sense of place remind me of Ann Cleeve's Shetland series. There is a small circle of suspects, and I had trouble working out whodunit! I am very much enjoying this author and I have purchased the rest of the series on the strength of the first two books.

Well-written, good characters and interesting plot. Set in small-town/country Scotland, and uses local issues for the backstory. Police procedural, with a strong woman lead (DI Marjory Fleming) and her Burn quoting Sargent. Not a lot of police work but great stories.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Oh what a tangled web! 4 février 2014
Par Robbie - Publié sur Amazon.com

As Scottish historical novelist, playwright, and poet Sir Walter Scott wrote "Oh what a tangled web we weave"... In the second novel of her DI Marjory Fleming series, Author Aline Templeton has woven a very tangled web indeed. The quiet fishing village of Knockhaven is teeming with secrets — adultery, drug trafficking, underage sex, shady business practices, revenge, and murder...or was it an accident? It's up to DI Fleming to find the truth, and if it was murder....who is the victim? The Darkness and the Deep — just as the name implies — is a dark tale set in a rural area of Scotland where the primary livelihoods — fishing and farming — have suffered major economic blows. As a result, sadly, the drug trade is flourishing at the hands of men who would have formerly earned their living honestly. As the wife of a farmer, Detective Inspector Marjory Fleming has been affected both personally and professionally by these difficult times. She is struggling to recover from the damage to her marriage to a farmer as well as the damage to her standing in the community, damage resulting from her being the officer in charge of enforcing a government policy which seems unnecessarily destructive to rural life. Just when it appears Marjory may regain her position of respect in the community, a series of tragic "accidents" strikes Knockhaven. When DI Fleming and her team fail to quickly determine the perpetrator, a motive, or even more basic, the actual victim, she is once again placed in a negative spotlight.DI Fleming is an unlikely heroine. Juggling the roles of wife, mother and public servant, she must deal with a husband still reeling from the devastating blow to his livelihood as a farmer, a daughter who has been ostracized by her teenage friends and shows every sign of developing an eating disorder while supervising the varied abilities and personalities of her subordinates who've had their tight knit group invaded by a talented and ambitious outsider more interested in competition than team work. The author has created a very strong character in DI Fleming. Although she relies heavily on "gut feeling", the intangible that isn't covered in handbooks, and is not above consulting a psychologist friend for guidance and insight into the personality of a killer, Marjory Fleming's primary goal is justice.Readers will find the plot of The Darkness and the Deep complex but easy to follow. In the initial phase of the investigation a number of likely perpetrators come to light and there are some very entertaining interviews between these characters and DI Fleming's investigators since not only do the police suspect them all, but they all suspect each other! The bottom line to which they all return at some point is "who was the actual victim"? The words of a dying man will offer a clue eventually leading the investigators to the answer and to the killer. Mystery fans will love the convoluted nature of this story and I suspect most, if not all, will be kept guessing (as we love to be!) to the very end. Just when you think you have it all figured out.... :-D

I enjoyed the story over all. I just felt a little overwhelmed by all the lifeboat service information and the amount of characters. The police procedure details were interesting and made the story intriguing and mysterious and the plot interesting. I thought the writer wrote the story with suspense in mind, very slow moving with a lot of details. I thought the small town and Detective Fleming personal life was interesting to uncover. Over all good story. 3.5 stars review by upallnightreadallday.blogspot.com

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I tend to gravitate to mystery novels more so than any other genre. I love a good mystery. This particular book was good, but I had some issues with it. One of the first things I had a problem with was the dialect and slang that was used. It is written in the Scottish lilt and at times it was hard for me to understand what was being said. Another thing I had issue with was how many characters there were in this story. It took awhile to get going because of all of the character introductions. I got frustrated because nothing was happening and I was over 1/3 of the way through with the book! I feel that some of the characters could have been left out and it wouldn't have detracted from the story at all. Other than those things, it was a good read. I definitely didn't figure out who the culprit was until it was revealed.
