On Easter Sunday in 1873, a group of black men was murdered at the Colfax Courthouse in Louisiana. As the white killers spread their version of events, U.S. Attorney James Beckwith sought to bring them to justice using newly minted federal powers. Charles Lane's account of the Colfax Massacre, and events before and after, is unflinching. Jim Bond's narration can be chilling as he relays the words of the white terrorists with full Southern accents, as well as the violent details of the story. Lane's book examines the issues surrounding Reconstruction after the Civil War and illustrates the dangers freedmen faced as they exercised their rights to vote and hold office.
