Présentation de l'éditeur

Run, ride your bike and enjoy yourself next to Jake Jameson, the most active child alive (according to his mother). But also prepare yourself to join him in a story that will—literally—take your breath away. While Jake is playing with his friends, he begins to have difficulties when breathing and is whisked away to the Emergency Room. He is diagnosed with Asthma, as so many children are today, and must learn all about the condition and how to take care of himself. This brilliant guide allows children to learn about Asthma through a kid-friendly, entertaining story.

This book is part of the Health Stories for Kids series (https://www.healthstoriesforkids.com/), which main goal is to serve as an educational resource that will benefit parents and children alike. The fictional stories include characters, who are just like you/your child, that discover why they are different and learn that they can overcome and lead normal lives. Each book is fundamentally divided in three sections:
1) Created for parents and caregivers, practical and useful tips to help recognize symptoms of conditions covered in each book.
2) The stories themselves—illustrated to capture children’s interest while educating them about various illnesses.
3) A list of online resources that adults can use to learn more about conditions.

Biographie de l'auteur

Brian Wu, a 7th year MD/PhD, is on track to finishing his PhD in 2014 and has a goal to becoming a Sports Medicine Physician with a focus on holistic care and treatment. The idea for writing the Storybook Illustrated Guides first occurred to Brian as a fifth grader, when he wrote a story "Wacky Olympics and Body Wars", which is a personification of the immune system and how our bodies fight disease. Since then, the idea has matured over the years and the result is nothing short of astonishing. Brian has created a revolutionary series of books that raises the bar where children’s health education is concerned. There’s nothing else like the SIGuides on the market today. Brian believes children should understand medical conditions they acquire, so that they can take good care of themselves and lead full lives. He has a way of writing about complex medical topics at a level that children comprehend. Brian understands the value of empowering children with diseases, enabling them to play an active role in their own treatment and recovery process. Brian values the ability for all ages to learn from the power of stories. He has the passion to share his love of science and medicine through these stories with the world. The power of storytelling stems from the fact that stories can teach without overbearing. Learning comes naturally when engaging both logical and creative sides of the brain. The facts surrounding each disease appeal to the logical side, making the story engaging and the learning fun. Brian knows that if he can help even a single person then the project will be well worth it. Brian’s interests include writing and entrepreneurship. He is married and loves his wife dearly. Engaging, informative, and creative, this Asthma guide will keep you and your child entertained and alive.

It isn't often I come across a high quality book that also speaks to the reader.

The author clearly knows his stuff!

Not only that, the author has figured out a way to explain asthma clearly to children who might not understand otherwise.

Will recommend.

Informative and useful guidebook for young children and their parents

We wish we had this type of handy guidebook when our children were young and suffering from seasonal allergies and asthma! This book provides simple explanations and useful tips for young children who suffer from asthma. The author does an excellent job in making the story interesting and easily understood. We look forward to reading the rest of the series and will keep all of them handy just in case for our grandchildren!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great book to teach kids and caregivers about asthma 22 août 2014

The book is written so that a child can understand what asthma is and what triggers an asthma attack. It has asthma tips for caregivers and a glossary of terms so the reader can educate themselves and others about asthma. It is illustrated to show the different items used to control and treat asthma.

I found this book very helpful and with quick guides on how to manage a child who has asthma. While I have three children, and none have asthma, I would have needed this book (and in fact might be good ahead of time) if any of them start developing asthma.

I wasn't sure of the beginning chapters where Jake develops bumps and bruises in sports and the ambulance comes over for minor injuries (why, as citizens have a duty to resist calls for ambulances or driving to emergency departments in hospitals where it ends up wasting the public resources and where there isn't really an emergency). I wasn't sure what that physical injuries have to do with asthma and I do pride on letting kids take risks, and in general if one looks at the very broad statistics, sports are quite injury-free and bring immense benefits in terms of fitness, team spirit, and sense of pride. But when the asthma part begins (and it does early enough) that's when I find the book most helpful.
