Présentation de l'éditeur

From money pit to windfall…or is it a pitfall?

After ten years together, Ethan Mallory and Rhett Solomon are calling it quits. They’re more than ready to dump their heavy emotional baggage. The only thing they can’t seem to unload is the house. They’re stuck living as roommates with a hefty mortgage hanging over their heads…at least until they can bring in some extra money to pay it down. Solution: rent out a room.

Enter Kieran Frost. Suddenly, the only thing Ethan and Rhett both want more than getting away from each other is getting close to their single, young, hot roommate. Complicating things is the fact that Kieran doesn’t mind the attention from both, and he certainly doesn’t mind sharing.

Their combined chemistry ignites something else that Ethan and Rhett had thought was long dead—the mutual attraction that drew them together in the first place. Except bitter jealousy over Kieran could only push them even farther apart…

Warning: Includes multiple threesomes, angry sex, makeup sex, and a little peeking.

The Distance Between Us is an emotionally gripping book that grabs the reader's heart and never lets it go.

Little did Rhett Soloman and Ethan Mallory realize the impact that renting a room in their house to Kieran Frost would have on their lives. Faster than Kieran can hand over the first and last month rent, these three roomies are burning up the sheets. It doesn't take long for casual, no strings sex to become the catalyst for discovering why Rhett and Ethan's relationship ended.

The Distance Between Us is written in first person from Rhett's perspective, and while that can sometimes limit character development, that is not the case with this book. Through in-depth and revealing conversations between the characters, Ms. Witt does an amazing job peeling away the layers of all the key players.

While beginning to date again in his late thirties is a daunting prospect, Rhett is ready for Ethan to move out so he can break free from the limbo they are currently living in. Watching Rhett wrestle with his complex emotions about the break up is often heartrending, but it's also tremendously satisfying when he begins to understand exactly what his feelings are. Everyone around him (including the reader) can see that he is not anywhere close to being over Ethan, but it takes a lot of soul-searching for Rhett to begin to grasp that.

On the surface, Ethan comes across as very nonchalant about Ethan. In the beginning, I wasn't sure I liked him all that much, and I thought Rhett was better off without him. It doesn't take long to see that Ethan isn't as detached as he'd like everyone to believe, and in fact, he plays a surprisingly pivotal role in the culmination of the book.

The Distance Between Us is a realistic portrayal of a long term relationship, and the problems that sometimes arise when partners fail to communicate. It is also an accurate depiction of just how far apart two people's perceptions of one another's actions can be.

The Distance Between Us packs an emotional wallop that is perfectly balanced with blazing hot sex. Ethan, Rhett, and Kieran will linger in your hearts and thoughts long after the last page is turned.

This was a good story for me for many different reason. The main point was, for sure, that it showed a most than comment event, when two people are still in love but due to their incapacity to talk are drifting apart till the point of breaking up.

Ethan and Rhett were probably the perfect couple of a romance novel, 10 years ago. Rhett was a bisexual man, divorced with a daughter, and he fell in love with Ethan, two years older; when they went to live together, Rhett's daughter was eight years old, and Ethan was as much as a father for her as Rhett was. Their life was so perfect that they even decided to buy an home together, maybe doing a step longer than the leg, but they were happy, in love and thinking to have the life in front of them.

10 years later, Rhett's daughter went to college, giving them maybe more space but also unbalancing their family steadiness. Ethan was never the man to speak aloud his feelings, preferring to show his love and interest with passion and sex rather than words. Rhett instead is the overthinking type, always playing scenarios in his mind and really needing to hear aloud that he is wrong, than his worst scenarios are not the reality. The situantion went to hell faster than expected and they are now a broken couple with only a lease to bound them together. To help them paying the lease, and in this way to reach faster the point when they will be able to go separate ways, they decide to rent a room to another gay friendly man.

Kieran is more than gay friendly, he is plenty interested in playing with both of them and without strings attached. He has no problem to switch between them and even to be simultaneously shared. And here is the second point I liked about this story: this is a menages a trois and it's not. I think Kieran represents the "distance" between Ethan and Rhett, and, even if it sounds strange, and worrisome, he replaced what Ethan and Rhett missed when Rhett's daughter moved out of home, the reason to be together. Now don't get me wrong, there was nothing of sexual in the relationship between fathers and daughter, and it's all about sex with Kieran, but in a way or the other, their daughter and Kieran represent the padlock to bound together the two men.

The real relationship is between Ethan and Rhett, Kieran is a, willing, tool. Kieran is not a permanent addition to the family, at least not in an exclusive way; he can be a good friend, but Kieran will have, sooner or later, to go out and search his own soul mate. But in the meantime he can help Ethan and Rhett to find again the right balance to start the second part of their life as a couple, no more dads and perfect family picture, but now more than 40 handsome men with still a lot of years in front of them to be happy together.

It was uncomfortable watching Ethan and Rhett hurt one another, especially the way they used Kieran to do it. There was so much jealousy and awkward tension under that roof, I almost couldn't stand it. But the ending did indeed make up for it, and I was not disappointed. This was my first time reading a "threesome" and although I didn't expect to like it, I must admit it was very, very sexy. The tongue ring...OMG. I enjoyed this story, and I liked the sequel The Closer You Get even better.

This story had lots of sex, but the emotional part of this couple who claimed they had 10 year loving relationship was hard for me to see. The were users and they played games, trying to out do each other at the expense of Kieren...someone tell me whats to like about that. I did appreciate the end when they resolved their issues, but they should have left Kieren out of it again.....

This is the first book in a trilogy by L. A. Witt. This book introduces four characters: Rhett Solomon, Ethan Mallory, Kieran Frost and Dale Ramsey. Rhett and Ethan’s story is resolved in this first book. Kieran, actually a major character in this book, will have his story resolved in the second book. And Dale Ramsey, a character who has only two scenes in this book, will have his major role in the third book of the trilogy.

In this story, Rhett and Ethan have been involved in a committed relationship for ten years, with the last three years devolving to the point that Ethan has ended the relationship with Rhett. Unfortunately, they cannot sell the home they have owned together for the last year because of the economic turndown in the housing market. Feeling unable to pay both a mortgage payment and apartment rents and feeling that they cannot rent the home out for enough to cover the mortgage, they decide to live in separate bedrooms and rent out their third bedroom to acquire extra money to pay down the mortgage. Enter Kieran Frost as the new roommate.

Basically, this is a classic plot. Two former lovers, who are hurt and angry, each get involved individually with the same guy. Rhett, who has been dumped by Ethan, is just trying to move on. Ethan, who dumped Rhett, is just trying to hurt Rhett. And Kieran gets caught in the middle.

Witt writes this novel in the first person POV of Rhett. His hurt, his anger and his confusion just boil off the pages and his character is one that the reader can definitely sympathize with. Now Ethan, that’s another story. This character is always painted with a smug expression, a grim or a smirk directed toward Rhett. Quite frankly, for about 7/8 of the book I wanted to slap that smirk off his face every time the author put it there. Until I didn’t. Until the author let us know what the real problem was.

About three-fourths of this novel is taken up with sexual content. While it is descriptively written, it is quite decorously done and falls well short of the current trend in erotica or soft porn. And there is no violence or BDSM. Rhett’s first person point of view is actually a plus here. The reader sees the sexual scenes from his interpretation only and, thus, the emotional component of the storyline is dramatically emphasized.

As a romance, this is a good one in a modern setting. Even with a classic premise of boy-meets-boy, boy-loses-boy, boy-gets-boy-back, it is not sappy nor it is completely predictable. And, thankfully, it does not end in a cliffhanger.

I received this book as part of the Goodreads First Reads Giveaway Program. That fact did not influence my opinion of the book.
