Revue de presse

"A crime novel that reminded me how fun it is to be scared of my own reflection at 3 a.m. The plot is dense, blood-soaked and thrilling."―Arielle Landau, New York Daily News

"A massively fun and thrilling read . . . Richard Montanari's expertly woven tale unfolds beautifully and smartly, never giving away too much, but always maintaining a sense of urgency and suspense that makes the act of reading such a joy."―Brooke Wylie, Examiner.com

"A master storyteller. Be prepared to stay up all night."―James Ellroy

"Montanari weaves a mesmerizing tale."―Lisa Gardner

"Compelling . . . Montanari creates a large cast of believable, moving characters, men and women with families, needs, and histories. The workings of the Philadelphia PD are as detailed and convincing as those of Isola in an Ed McBain novel, in which the city itself becomes a virtual character."―Publishers Weekly

Présentation de l'éditeur

Mr Marseille is polite, elegant, and erudite. He would do anything for his genteel true love Anabelle. And he is a psychopath.

A quiet Philadelphia suburb. A woman cycles past a train depot with her young daughter. And there she finds a murdered girl posed on a newly painted bench. Strangled. Beside her is a formal invite to a tea dance in a week's time.

Seven days later, two more young victims are discovered in a disused house, posed on painted swings. At the scene is an identical invite. This time, though, there is something extra waiting for Detectives Kevin Byrne and Jessica Balzano.

A delicate porcelain doll. It's a message. And a threat.

With Marseille and Anabelle stalking the city, Detectives Byrne and Balzano have just seven days to find the link between the murders before another innocent child is snatched from its streets.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 So another outing for one of my favourite detective duo’s Byrne and Balzano 14 août 2014
Par Liz Barnsley - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
So another outing for one of my favourite detective duo’s Byrne and Balzano, and another terrifically chilling journey into the heart of darkness.

I love these books even though, frankly, Mr Montanari’s “bad guys” tend to scare the bejeezus out of me and usually stalk me around my dreams during the reading experience, often lingering for quite a while afterwards. Hey we all like to be scared occasionally and for me, the scariest moments come not from monsters under the bed but the monsters hidden in plain sight – and this is what this author pulls off so well every single time.

The series has grown in stature with every book since its beginnings in “The Rosary Girls”, one of the best things about it being the main character progression – both Jessica and Kevin have come a long way since we first met them way back when, and meeting them again is always a joy. In this instalment they are facing true horror as the city’s children are in danger and it is a race against time to prevent another loss – but this may come a little closer to home than either of them expect.

I’m always addicted once I start – the plotting is intelligent and keeps you on the edge of your seat, but there is also a lot of emotional depth to all the people and a really really good sense of place which keeps you immersed in the story throughout. The villains get as much attention as our good guys – the reason why I get so freaked out by them is because the psychological depth is always extremely well drawn, the backstory clever and the feel for them real. They could be you. They could be me. Its ok…its not me!

Overall a brilliant addition to an already brilliant series and one I would highly recommend for any Crime Fiction fan.

Happy Reading Folks!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great writing..... great story 21 juin 2015

I'll admit that the beautiful cover on this book drew me in. I'd never read a Richard Montanari book before, and the description on the dustjacket looked good. This is the 8th in the Byrne/Balzano series, and not having read any of the others, I felt that I was able to read without any of the background on the characters. Montanari's writing is superb and the story was compelling. After I read this book, I bought all the others in the series. Love discovering a new author.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Detectives Byrne and Balzano have toughest emotional challenge yet. 29 juillet 2015

This is the eighth book in author Richard Montanari's wonderful Kevin Byrne/ Jessica Balzano series set in Philadelphia. "The Doll Maker" is a very dark, and intensely crafted mystery thriller. The two long time partners will be put to their toughest challenge emotionally yet. Balzano now completed law school is about to take bar exam. However, she's torn as to leaving Byrne and PPD to move over to D.A's office. Financially speaking this would also mean she'd be facing a huge hole. Luckily for Byrne, Jessica wants to stick with being a cop for the foreseeable future. Next up on the "Wheel" to catch a case, the two detectives catch a particularly horrifying murder. This victim is sitting up on a bench and covered with plastic sheet, and holding some unknown odd flower in each hand. Once plastic sheets is removed it's discovered the victim has a railroad spike driven straight through top of his head. The case is very slow going. Meanwhile Byrne is also obsessed with an old case about to be finally put to rest. Serial killer Valerie Beckert is now within three weeks of her execution. Byrne is positive she's responsible for at least six if not twelve other murders of small children. But soon the small bodies in the Philadelphia murders keep popping up. Each has a small replica doll found somewhere nearby the victim. They include a thirteen year old girl, a set of fraternal twins, and a sixteen year old mall worker. In addition to a doll at each murder scene an invitation to tea is also left. The madness seems to get worse wit each murder. The case travels up the Pa. Turnpike into Lehigh. With a bounce to Cleveland, we are introduced to Detective Jack Paris. Paris is one of author Montanari's other series protagonist. Packed with fright at every turn this book is extremely intense from start to finish. At a very surprisingly quick 496 pages, I read last 369 in one sitting. I just refused to move before I finished book. Just an incredibly suspenseful mystery thriller. As with all of Richard Montanari's Byrne/ Balzano books, the amazing characters always carry his books with supreme confidence. The characters are just so well defined and built. It's the depth of the characters, especially the bad guys who make this a special read. It seems with each additional Byrne/ Balzano book they seem to get better and better each time. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in series to come out ! Richard Montanari is truly an outstanding story teller. 5 stars out of a possible 5 stars for "The Doll Maker". If you haven't started getting into Mr. Montanari's Bynre? Balzano series you're missing some of the best suspense mystery thrillers out there. Run son't walk ! A absolute must.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 "You are invited!" 9 mars 2015

An excellent police procedural thriller, the 8th in the series featuring Philadelphia Homicide Detectives Jessica Balzano and Kevin Byrne, is a winner!

I've read a couple others in this series, and loved the author's writing style. After tearing through this one, I'm determined to go to the backlist to catch up on what other great stories I've missed. This was a very fast-paced read that kept me glued to the pages and had great characters. It never let up!

Haunting and disturbing drama centering on a series of chilling murders where the victims appear eerily staged. With each successive death, Balzano and Byrne are stymied by what appears to be a tenuous connection to a death row inmate and cold case files of kidnapped or missing children. And what about the dolls? As the clues are pieced together, Balzano and Byrne race to find a very unusual type of killer before another victim can be invited to a sinister and deadly "tea dance".

I'd recommend this to any fan who wants to read a complex suspense novel with multidimensional main characters and great "bad guys". I loved that there were no romantic overtones and that the relationship of the partners was based in mutual respect and deep friendship. I can't wait to read the next in this series!

Thank you to NetGalley and Mulholland books for the e-book ARC to review!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Got me on the edge of my seat! 21 août 2015

Definitely one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's filled with suspense and drama and some humor here and there. It's one of those books where you have to put the pieces together and figure out what's going on and kind of solve the mystery which is my kind of book. It's slow in the beginning but that's with every book, talking about the characters etc. in the book, it definitely back tracks a lot which is good so you can get the full scoop of what's happening. Highly recommend this book! If I could do more than 5 stars I definitely would. Great writer and even better book. Thanks for the great read!
