Présentation de l'éditeur

‘Irresistible. One controversial expatriate on another.’ – Philip Mansel ‘Vivid.’ – Michael Bloch ‘Wit and intelligence.’ – Philip Ziegler ‘Cracking photographs.’ – Evening Standard An intimate of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Diana Mosley was a frequent guest at their parties in Paris, or at ‘the Moulin’ in Orsay, where they were neighbours. Written in her inimitable style Diana Mosley paints a remarkable portrait of her friend that is also realistic with regards to her flaws. What was it about her that utterly captivated the heir to the throne and made him renounce it when he became King? It is this question which Diana Mosley seeks to answer and which she is perhaps better qualified to answer than anyone else, given her marriage to Sir Oswald Mosley, Leader of the British Fascists.

This is written by a friend of the Duchess of Windsor and so it's understandably biased. So if you just want to read one book, this wouldn't be the one. But, if you are looking for more insight into thoughts and motivations, this book does add to the story.

It gives insight into why Wallis Simpson was so afraid of flying. Her first husband (a disastrous marriage) was an early airplane pilot and the `crash gong' often sounded on the base. When that happened, use of the telephone was limited so that important calls could go through, but it also meant that it would be a long time before anyone knew if someone, and who, had been injured or killed in a crash. Given it's bias, it also does a surprisingly good job at explaining the thoughts and motivations and reactions of King George V and Queen Mary - the Duke's parents, with regard to the relationship between the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

The Duchess of Windsor seems to have been portrayed before as a rather stilted person, out to get all she can. Although, she is treated like royalty from her husband and spends money like she is royalty, she is portrayed as a very charming person. I was really interested in the writings of Lady Moseley so that is why I chose the book. It is very readable and offers the reader an insight into the Duchess and the Prince of Wales.

I really enjoyed this book! we have read so much about Wallis the Duchess of Windsor that painted her in a very bad way. I think Diana Mosley knew her intimately and wrote a much more factual account of their affair and marriage. I felt so sorry that they were treated unkindly by the Royal Family, however that was the way it was then. She became a sad figure in her later years and I found myself mourning for her sadness when she was left alone. The Duke obviously loved her dearly to take the action that he did in abdicating. All before my time but a great read. Recommended highly.

Turns out this is a sad , poignant story about Edward ( David) and Wallis Simpson. They had their many faults and disregarded family and friends feelings and both committed adultery. It does bother me that these things were glossed over in the book , but then the author was a friend to both. I have mixed feelings about it in that regard. I do however try not to judge as that is not my place. It appears from what this friend , Diane Milford saw they were in spite of it all , good people and Wallis was made out to be quite the shrew she wasn't but we all have our moments and not a one of us is close to perfect. For better or worse they seem " made for each other " according to ms.Milford and were never to be forgiven. I believe in this time period the former king would actually have a psychiatric diagnosis and seems mentally Ill. Very childlike , impulsive and selfish he appears to have followed Wallis like a puppy dog. I'm sure much to the despair and embarrassment of the royal family , who are not wrapped to tight themselves. They endured a great deal and paid the price for their choices. But I still enjoyed the book , although kindle edition had more than a few mistakes ,it didn't affect the story. Quick read pretty much right through it and had the time to finish it in two days.

This is a sympathetic portrayal of the duchess. A refreshing view. Worth reading and gives you an intimate idea of her everyday life.
