A Messy Disappointment 18 avril 2014

I am a huge Elizabeth George fan and look forward to her Inspector Lynley novels. As a former teacher, I also like to read the YA fiction to see what my kids are reading. The first novel in this series was based on an intriguing premise--a girl who can read others' thoughts, hiding from her evil stepfather. This book, however was all over the place, as if the author was trying to throw every thing a teen reader might like into the plot (which is pretty insulting to YA readers). The evil stepfather became a seldom mentioned subplot. There was little discussion at all about the fact that her mother had never come back for her. Becca is supposedly in hiding, but continues to attend school, the first place any reasonable evil stepfather would look. And let's talk about a school that allows her to keep attending without immunization records or transcripts--a few weeks, maybe, but months? She supposedly can't go to the police because they won't believe she can read minds, but couldn't she demonstrate this ability to them and ask for protection? Messy, messy, messy with so many side plots that the original premise of this series gets lost. Cannot believe that this is the same author I've loved so long.

For teenagers only! 22 avril 2014

All Elizabeth George fans need to know this book is geared for young readers. I was disappointed as I was expecting an adult book from the author. It should have been publicized differently.

Good book. Wonderful narrative...but I really hated the ending as it relates to one of the main characters. Too much unresolved.

I wanted to love this., but don't. 14 avril 2014

Elizabeth George is one of my favorite writers because she obviously puts a lot of thought and research into her stories. Her novels are complex and her characters well drawn. Perhaps because this series is aimed a young adults, it is less riveting than her Lynley novels. At times, the story drags on as the main character, who is in hiding from her step father, has repeated unpleasant encounters with another teen girl which become predictable and boring. I also can't understand why this young woman won't seek help from responsible authorities, including her boyfriend's father, the local sheriff. The introduction in the second novel in the series of a new character seemingly unrelated to anything else that is happening may save the story... we'll see....

Disappointing for Fans of Elizabeth George 7 juin 2014

I've read everything written by this author, and it's fair to say I'm a huge fan. She was trying something new with this book, and while I applaud an author's attempt to stretch, sometimes those efforts aren't successful. This is a girls' tween book, and not a book that will appeal to adult readers. That's the first clue that this book is different. George is writing in a different voice, but it's not authentic. The characters aren't fully developed, their voices aren't true (and literally the lingo ascribed to the teens doesn't ring true at all, she missed it there), the characters' actions don't make sense, the story line is odd. Also, I really missed the clever dialog and literary references that characterize her other work. Unless you're a tween, I'd skip this one and wait for her next one.
