5.0 étoiles sur 5 The Eighth Science Fiction Megapack is a Winner 21 janvier 2014

This series has become a staple purchase for me. The Eighth Science-Fiction Megapack is a terrific bargain for just 99-cents. Hours -- and I do mean hours -- of enjoyable reading. I wasn't crazy about the very first one, but following that, these books have presented a very nice, representative mix of the genre. Some stories are older, but most are of recent vintage, culled from various sci-fi magazines and collections of originals.

Several stories deserve special mention:

The True Dark, by Pamela Sargent is really a horror story that reminded me of Serling's "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street," but it's way scarier.

Robots Don't Cry, by Mike Resnick, is a superb account of a robot that remains loyal to a child long gone. It might seem a bit dusty in the room you're reading it in

Way Down East, by Tim Sullivan, is the story of honoring an alien's last wish. A humorous, though melancholy story (there are several in the collection).

Consequences of Steam, by Michael Hemmingson, is a time travel story -- always a favorite of mine -- about needing more than one try to 'get it right' in a desire to live in the past.

Outside Looking In, by Mark E. Burgess, is an action tale of the old theory that our universe might just be a lab experiment in some other universe. Clever ending.

After All, by Robert Reginald, is a weird (but in a good way) post-post-apocalyptic story about a survivor and his unusual friends.

Monkey On His Back, by Charles V. De Vet, reminds us that you can't escape your past, especially a mercenary one.

My favorite, and worth the price of admission all by itself, is The Survivors, by Tom Godwin. This is a harrowing account of abandonment on and having to survive on a hostile, alien world type of story, but very well done, and if it takes a thousand years -- revenge is still sweet. Nearly novel length, if you enjoyed the Genellan series by Scott Gier, you'll love this entry.

The Eighth Science-Fiction Megapack is a winner!

To begin with, let me state that I have read the complete series of the Science Fiction Megapacks and for the most part I've enjoyed the various collections. Book Eight is an okay read and I enjoyed it. Comparatively, I would put this collection midway in the series; it is not the worst of the collections but it is not the best.

The collection is a mix of new and very old authors, and the reader can easily discern who is who in this book. The newer authors make references to cell phones, internet, and other modern technologies that were not even thought of in classic Sci/Fi. For the most part I found that I enjoyed both groups of authors equally. There were some old stories that I didn't quite get and some new that I disliked. Overall, it was a mixed bag that had a less than optimistic feel. This started with the first story in the book, The True Darkness by Pamela Sargent (a story I disliked) and continued throughout the collection.

Story that I found enjoyable and thought provoking were PERMANENT FATAL ERRORS, by Jay Lake, ADJUSTMENT TEAM, by Philip K. Dick, ROBOTS DON'T CRY, by Mike Resnick, THE PICK-UP, by Lawrence Watt-Evans, POPULATION IMPLOSION, by Andrew J. Offutt, NEFERTITI'S TENTH LIFE, by Mary A. Turzillo, and AFTER ALL, by Robert Reginald.

A plus to this collection is that there is only one story repeated in it that had already been published in an earlier collection by this publisher. That story is MONKEY ON HIS BACK, by Charles V. De Vet, which by the way is a pretty good story. This is appreciated as previous collections in this series have reprinted up to five stories from previous books and I've often found it annoying.

A concern...I noticed in the editor's comments that the publisher is thinking of producing a new book on a monthly basis. Personally, unless the publisher gets access to some really good authors, I think the quality of the collections will suffer. A book a year is good enough.

Overall, while not an up beat collection of tales, there is a lot there that makes a person think, which in my opinion is a definite plus. Thus I recommend this book to anyone following the series.

I have now read all 8 of the currently available sci-fi megapack e-books. They are all good reads for fans of science fiction.
Yes, there are some very minor spelling/editing issues, but with rare exceptions, all the stories deliver the goods..and, of course, you can't beat the price.
