Prometheus Hall of Fame Award Winner, 2000—Hans Christian Andersen, The Emperor's New Clothes

“Deliciously wry.”—Publishers Weekly

“The illustrations throughout are graceful and light, reflecting the weight of this magic cloth. . . . A timeless tale of truth-telling, one young readers will always enjoy with a laugh.”—Children's Literature --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Relié .

Présentation de l'éditeur

Illustrated by the beloved creator of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, The Little House, and Katy and the Big Snow, here is a delightful version of the tale that boys and girls have loved for centuries. The Emperor himself, his court, and his clothes—or lack of them—are ridiculous as only the master storyteller Hans Christian Andersen can make them. Fifty-five years ago, Virginia Lee Burton added to this tale of fun her own irrepressible humor in pictures and design. This brilliant new edition features Burton’s original illustrations photographed anew, freshly exhibiting her lively concoction of remarkable spirit and beauty.

Enjoyed Reading This To 5 Yr Old Grandson 6 novembre 2012
Par Kayly - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
Nickelodean TV featured a version of this story on its' Ruby & Max cartoon series so thought I'd carry it a step further by getting the book to read to my grandson. This one has marvelous artwork and our "Max" loved looking at the pictures and hearing the story read to him. A little difficult to get the moral across but you can easily expand on the story while reading it and I think we'll read it again sometime. Enjoy reading old tales to my grandchildren that I heard when I was young. Called 4 bookstores in my area and none of them carried it. Thanks to Amazon, you can find pretty much everything you're looking for.

Classic Story and Excellent Art 13 septembre 2009
Par Charles P. Roof - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I have seen several versions of the story on TV but I was blown away by the art of Virginia Lee Burton in adapting this Hans Christian Anderson fable. For us visual types the art helps frame the story. It is also cleaverly done when the emperpor is looking in the mirror the angle is such that we see what the empoer sees. It is a great story for early elementary teachers (grades 1 and 2) to read aloud to their reading groups. It is also a good story for remedial English learners because it is an interesting story and the vocabulary is straight forward. It woulld be an excellent project for student teachers to use for any of their reading class projects. As with all fables it has a moral without being religious.

I don't really like the way it is translated to english.Translation made it so hard for a 6 years old kid to get this wonderful story.I owned a simple version 20 years ago and it was my favorite story.Drawings in this book are just ok and kind of not eye catching for kids! buy this story for your kid but from a different publisher!

My husband and I have been looking for secular books to teach our son about morals and values. Although probably too long and wordy for our 3 year old, I think that has he yes older this will be a favorite. It teaches about honesty, integrity, and standing up for what you know is right.
Interesting To This Day 11 novembre 2014

In The Emperor’s New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen, some of the wording seems to be written in an odd order, but that is due to the era in which it was written. Even so, the story itself is very comedic. The emperor loves clothes, so much so that he changes into a new outfit every hour.

On day, two tricksters decide to prank him. They tell him that they can make him a garment of the finest quality. The garment will be invisible to those who are stupid or not fit for their position. The emperor is all for it and gives the tricksters the material they require. The tricksters take the materials for themselves and pretend to weave the garment. The emperor sends people to check on the garment. None of them can see it, but they will not admit it. If they did, the emperor would think they were either stupid or unfit for their position. They pretend to see it and tell the emperor how fabulous it is.

When the garment is completed, the emperor goes to have a look at it. He cannot see it. He lies so that his people do not think he is stupid or unfit to lead. The tricksters comment on how light the fabric is and ask the emperor to take off his clothes so that they may dress him. He takes off his clothes and the tricksters dress him. The emperor checks himself out in the mirror, examining the fabric that is not there.

The tricksters lead him out to the procession. No one in the crowd sees the garments. After a while, a boy says that the emperor is without clothes. People begin to talk and word gets back to the emperor. At this point, he knows that he has been tricked. He still does not want to admit it, so he continues the procession with even more confidence.

It is no wonder why people enjoy this story. It shows how gullible people can be, as well as how far they will go to make others believe they are smart and worthy. It also teaches a valuable lesson to the emperor. He was so concerned about changing his clothes every hour and being adored, when no one really cared about what he wore. The fact that he remained confident in his “underwear”, once he found out he had been tricked, shows that he grew a bit as a person.

The message is there, but it is not force-fed to the reader. This makes it a great children’s story, both for the moral and entertainment value. Hans’ life story alone is enough to inspire, but his prolific writing puts the icing on the cake. He is the kind of author who should be on everyone’s to-be-read list.
