Présentation de l'éditeur

Genre: LGBT Fantasy

The echoes of a war four years' past still resounds in the minds of those who endured it. Jaden longs to search for his sister, though he is bound in the fetters of slavery. When he is given to the very man who conquered his country, he is caught up in his own hatred, yet fascinated by the mystery of his new master, the Emperor of Tranaden, who all say is demonic, without mercy. Trapped in the snare of his master’s beauty, Jaden begins to realize that there is much more beneath the surface...

Dersai is Emperor to his fingertips, he is used to command and being obeyed. He will sacrifice anything to see his country safe. Beneath, he is well read, highly intelligent and far sighted in how he views others. Yet, Dersai has an inner demon, a demon that kept his kingdom free and safe from conquerors; only in his dreams can he imagine one strong enough to love him. Now his slave may be the only one who can set him free.

Publisher's Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Domination/submission, dubious consent, male/male sexual practices, violence.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Totally indulgent, sexy read! 27 mars 2011

Good lord, just thinking about this story gets me all hot and bothered! Yeah, I know, it's one of MANY slash fics with a captive protagonist falling in love with his captor, but this was better than just about any others I've read. So incredibly hot, angsty and wonderful - like that molten chocolate cake covered with chocolate sauce and...yummy! Deep? Well, maybe at times, but I didn't care one bit if it wasn't!

MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW:
Jaden's been a slave since he was captured in a war with Tranadan. He watched his only sister sold into slavery at age 8, and he wants only to find her again. When he's offered up as a "tribute" to Dersai, the Emperor of Tranadan, he thinks only of vengeance. And yet, Dersai is not exactly who Jaden expected he would be. He treats Jaden well, and Jaden eventually falls in love with his captor. But Jaden cannot forget the pain he and his sister suffered at the hands of Tranadan and Desai himself - his lack of trust in the truth about Dersai's nature leads him to nearly lose that which he needs/wants so much.

I've read J.C. Owens' "Gaven" books Gaven and The Bonding [Gaven 2], and I had very mixed feelings about them, partly because I felt they should have been one single book, not two shorter reads. But I had no such qualms about "The Emperor's Wolf" - this was a substantial read and very well-done. Minor editing mistakes here and there, but nothing that turned me off.

Well-written, and incredibly sexy (very, very hot sex scenes -warning, some are dub-con, at least at the beginning of Dersai and Jaden's relationship). The world-building here is good, with strong descriptions of surroundings that really lent the story a warmth and realism not often found in M/M slash. Great angst, although I'd love to have gotten a bit more of Dersai's character coming through (one of the downsides of first person narratives, in my opinion). Indulgent read? Yes, totally! Just like a really good dessert. One I'll be eating...I mean, reading again.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 if you suspend disbelief... 29 mai 2011

Set in a bizarre fantasy world, apparently a sort of Near East (Turkey or Caucasus more than Arabia) in the Middle Ages but with some surprisingly modern technology (guns, especially) this novel makes scant use of the possibilities of such a setting circumscribing them to a vague background to the characters' love story. For this reason I should be rather esitant to call this a "fantasy" novel.

If you manage to suspend disbelief (and keep it that way) you shall probably enjoy a fair amount of emotional tension conveyed by proficient writing and you will be treated to a satisfying happy ending. I did not dislike this side of the story and was duly happy with its happily ever after.

If you do not, or at least, if you sometimes do not, you shall probably notice how short this novel is, and for the price, moreover.
You will also realise how non existent the plot is: the setting is there just to make the two main characters suffer a lot before meeting and then meet under unfavourable circumstances so as to have them begin their relationship in sort of a master/slave cliché.
This mentioned, characterization is also lacking. The story is told in third person but the point of view is only that of the slave. All the other characters are dim as if they did not catch their author's interest. The other main character, the Emperor, is over the top, all the way. Everything about him is huge: body, physical endowments (that endowment too), sufferings, rage...

Sex scenes are many, graphic and not bad (but the slave felt to me like a woman, sometimes) but neither are they memorable.

In my opinion this is a good harlequin-like romance for a couple of hours of very undemanding fun.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Loved It! 5 février 2011

I have read 4 of JC Owens books and I have loved every one of them. Emperor's wolf is no exception. The story takes place in a semi historical world. Jaden is taken as slave to an Emperor and from there a love story ensues. All of JC Owens' characters have some kind of angst they have to fight through before they can find true happiness. Its this fight that gives such depths to these characters.

The story is told from Jaden's point of view and you can see all his struggles and what he has gone through. I fell in love with Jaden's character and found my self sucked into the story. If you like your love stories to be a tumultuous then you will enjoy this book.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Not very likable 14 novembre 2011

The book has potential, but characters are underdeveloped, and situation is not well explained.
Instant connection is possible, but has to be backed up by the way characters interact, and of course, time. This is not the case here. One moment it is "I trust you", "You are mine everything", and the next there are accusations of the foulest nature. Not consistent, both in regards to characters and the story line.
Besides, book cover promises one thing and the book does not deliver ;-)

Jaden could have easily been female and this story wouldn't have changed, which is a big pet peeve for me in mm romance. Also, though the beginning was tolerable if one suspended belief and thought of it as a uke/seme tale, the character actions towards the end didn't make sense given who we are told they were. I also hate when much of the conflict could be resolved with a simple conversation. Didn't really enjoy this but the writing was okay (though the story was lacking) and there were no grammatical errors so 3.5 stars. Also the sex was pretty hot.
