Biographie de l'auteur

Reed Mangels, PhD, RD, LD, FADA, is a nutrition advisor for the nonprofit educational Vegetarian Resource Group, as well as nutrition editor and a regular columnist for Vegetarian Journal. She is the coauthor of the American Dietetic Association's position paper on vegetarian diets as well as their new food guide for vegetarians. Dr. Mangels is an instructor in the nutrition department of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Un livre assez superficiel sur l'alimentation végétalienne et la grossesse : pas très utile si on a déjà lu beaucoup sur ces deux sujets, mais c'était le premier livre de grossesse que j'ai lu, donc il m'a intéressée et été utile.

Sure this book will cover every topic but so so superficially that after reading the book you still have the same questions. For example the book advises soy, soy and soy products throughout the pregnancy. Are so many soy products dangerous for you and your baby?Well the book says no and justifies in a few very not-convincing lines. Excuse me I need more info than that! And it is just an example, the whole book is like that.

I absolutely loved this book. I have a few other books on general pregnancy and none of them really address vegetarianism or veganism. This book fills in the gaps. There are separate chapters for some of the more important nutrients that you need while pregnant. I love that the author explains why you need that particular nutrient and what's happening in your body that spawns an increased need for it. Then it goes into what foods you can get those things from naturally and there's a really helpful list at the end of each chapter that gives you some ideas of how to easily add a little bit of this or that to your food. Sometimes it's things like nutritional yeast or kelp flakes that you can just sprinkle on your food for a bit of extra nutrition.

There is some good information on how to deal with people who might have issue with you being vegan while pregnant. There are some great tips on how to respond to some of the comments you might get and what information you might want to share with people who are saying certain things. The end of the book even has some recipes, which could really be helpful if you're unsure of how to eat now that you're pregnant. I haven't made any of them, but I did look through them. All of the recipes look fairly simple and quick, which is a bonus when you're tired and you need to eat and don't really feel like making food.

I really can't recommend this book enough. If you're vegan or even just vegetarian, pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, you should definitely pick this up.

This book guides you through ALL your pregnancy with amazing information. Fully loaded with nutrition tips, exercise, and month by month questions that arise during pregnancy and labor. Also has really good recipes :) I really appreciated the nutritional content of the book, so important when there are not many books on the market that talk about vegan nutrition for pregnant women. Thumbs up for The Everything Vegan Pregnancy Book!

I bought this book shortly after finding out I was pregnant (as well as a few others). I've been a vegan for over five years, so I didn't expect to find too much new information but rather to use this book as a resource for vegan pregnancy-specific nutritional information. Some sections seem to be more geared to the newly vegan or those who want to better understand the vegan diet (ex. the reasons for going vegan and the section about finding vegan food at the supermarket).

As for nutritional information, this book has lots of great suggestions for getting each nutrient that is especially important for vegans during pregnancy (protein, iron, zinc, vitamin b12, folate, calcium, vitamin D, DHA, etc.). There is also lots of good information on staying healthy during pregnancy, including food safety specifically for vegans, food safety for vegans who live with non-vegans and tips on camping/hiking while pregnant.

There was also a lot of general pregnancy information, although it's not nearly as detailed as the week-by-week type pregnancy books. I would recommend getting at least one other pregnancy book in addition to this one if you want week-by-week information or extra information about all the different body changes during pregnancy.

The last 100 pages or so has recipes, but I haven't tried any of them yet. This is mostly because I often cook without recipes and when I do use recipes, I have a large collection of vegan cookbooks to choose from. The recipes seem about on-par with how healthy the food I normally prepare is (lots of variety of grains, beans, veggies, fruit). However, I tend to use less oil than some of these recipes call for (ex. the Pad Thai recipe that "serves 4" calls for 1/4 cup of oil to fry a pound of tofu...I would probably use half that much or less.)

Overall, this book is a great resource for vegan-specific issues during pregnancy, but I think most people will want at least one other pregnancy book for more detailed information.

Having read the Everything Vegan Cookbook, I was disappointed to find that the recipes were largely the same and that very little of the information was vegan specific. It felt like they took a few chapters from What to Expect When You are Expecting and their previous vegan cooking materials to publish a new book.

It would be a good start if you know nothing about pregnancy or about vegan cooking, but otherwise I would recommend finding other sources.

This book seems like it was written by someone who is not vegan trying to relay the "101" guide to being vegan. If you are already very conscious about maintaining a nutritious vegan diet, this book will be a waste of your time...and may even offend you. Plus, while many of the recipes are technically vegan, they are definitely not the most healthful options.
