The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault 30 août 2011

Charles Perrault was a famous French literary writer, and at one point in his long and illustrious career, he wrote (possibly with his son) a series of fairy tales. They were eventually translated into English and were/are wildly popular.

Basically it's a book of a few well-known and high-quality fairy tales that have appeal and appropriateness for all ages. The language is a bit old fashioned, as is some of the spelling ('inchant' rather than 'enchant,' for example) but it's definitely worth reading.

Although, the word 'faggot' is used in the text to refer to sticks, which is historically what it meant, but if you're sensitive, that might be something to consider.

There's an active table of contents, no illustrations (but the captions are left in the text to tease), the page numbers are left in the text, and the first letter of every story is mysteriously dropped. Oh, and the very last line of the last story was in an illustration, so that's missing.

The stories included are:

Little Red Riding Hood (Sans woodcutter)
The Fairy
Blue Beard
The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods
The Master Cat; or, Puss in Boots
Cinderilla; or, the Little Glass Slipper
Little Thumb
The Ridiculous Wishes

An Outstanding Collection of Excellent Tales 9 mai 2010
Par Darien Summers - Publié sur
Format: Broché
This is an outstanding collection of some of the Charles Perrault's best tales; namely, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Blue Beard. His stories are definitely not told in a manner consistent with American storytelling, but I don't necessarily think that is bad, especially if you want your child to expand their horizons.

One of the stories, for example, Blue Beard, is about a rich bachelor that seemingly has everything that a well off man of his settings would need, except for one thing: the fact that he has a blue beard. This fact doesn't earn him favor with the ladies and he has trouble finding a wife. What is ever the more strange is that it's rumored that Blue Beard has apparently had many wives in the past, but none of them are accounted for now. Well, Blue Beard finally manages to marry a girl in this tale, and when she finds out what happened to those other wives she ends up terribly frightened for her own fate. Nothing bad becomes of her though.

An interesting tale, like I said, one to get if you're looking for something different. The other stories are well worth the read too. I hope you give the book a try.

Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book.

I bought this because I was looking for ab original version of "donkey skin.' I read a novel ( "Deerskin") based off of the aforementioned story a number of years ago and have been looking for an original unedited version ever since. I don't think the version in this collection meets that criteria.
Love it! 1 mars 2014

I love to read fairy tales, since I have always liked to try and find the symbolism in them, as well as try to find where the grain of truth in them may be. Interesting read.

This collection of fairy tales from French writer Charles Perrault
Contains stories you may be familiar with and others that may be new to you.

The Brothers Grimm did their own take of some of these stories. When I read those I thought they were dark compared to the Disney versions. I take that back because the versions in this collection are even darker though they all have a moral to them.
