Présentation de l'éditeur

We all know what families look like when they’re broken. But how were they meant to look? Authors Glenn Stanton and Leon Wirth rediscover the Creator’s majestic plan behind this essential, endangered institution—and bring it down to earth with practical application for every spouse and parent.

This book is an extension of Focus on the Family’s much-anticipated The Family Project, a 12-week church and small group series that will change the way moms, dads, wives, and husbands see themselves—and help them build healthy households from the best blueprint of all.

While following the topic outline of The Family Project curriculum, this book stands alone and delves into the subject areas more deeply. It provides a solid exploration of God’s design and the transformative purpose of biblical families, and also offers down-to-earth helps for living out God’s design in your own family, along with inspiration for helping others do the same.

Focus on the Family has created yet another excellent resource that can be easily adapted to fit your family, a small group study, or a church series. It reminds us that we are all fallen, broken, sinful people, but with the help of God we can be healed and proper image bearers for our families and the world. The authors dive deep into how the breakdown of the family can be tied to the sin issues we see in our society such as: poverty, divorce, abuse, drugs, crime etc, and how when we get our families right with God to be proper image-bearers we help conquer these issues within our community by changing the frame work of future generations of families.

This book offers so many things:

* Statements of Reflection-wonderful, in depth statement to make you ponder the Word, Gods character, how we are living and should live life, community and more are found at the end of each chapter. You can easily focus your prayers around these reflections and spend countless hours discussing them and searching within the Word to find the in-depth truth.
* Questions for Consideration-deeply profound questions that will get you thinking about life, consequences, sexuality, Satan, spiritual warfare, roles of fatherhood, motherhood and being a child along with so much more.
* Charts, graphs and statistics
* Get the Picture-really fantastic links to photos taken throughout the centuries with some background history.

My favorite chapter though, admittedly, was My Imperfect Family. The title alone screams out to me. I am an imperfect individual striving for perfection I will never achieve. This small chapter cover how I can improve my current family situations, ways to help create a biblical family (or strengthen the one you have), essential behaviors for parents and kids (praying together, learning each others love language, being involved in your kids world) and learning what your families calling is (make an impact by the way you live life). Wrote is easy to understand terms, this book gives us simply ways to make profound changes within our family that will have an impact generations to come. This book tackles some really tough subjects that frankly alot of others gloss over or leave out. We live in a fallen and broken world and there are certain topics that are uncomfortable to deal with and talk about that our society has deemed appropriate and acceptable. I appreciated the tactful way these topics were handled without glossing over the importance of how they breakdown the family as God has designed it.

[Note: This book was provided free of charge by Tyndale Press in exchange for an honest review.]

In many ways this book, which was written by two people associated with Focus On The Family, deals with an area of my life that has been a continual source of great suffering and anguished longing on my part, but neither it is a subject that can be safely ignored. At its heart, this book wrestles with three fundamental questions and four fundamental statements of the nature of man as described in scripture. The three questions are movingly told from a Gaugin series of paintings: who are we? where do we come from? where are we going? The four fundamental statements the Bible talks about are the fact that God created us in His image (both male and female), that it is not good that man should be alone, that we became like God to know good and evil, and that in the end those who believe will be part of the bride of Christ. Anyone who knows anything about my life is going to recognize that some of these are going to be painful subjects, and this book certainly delivers on that.

At its heart, this is a book about family. The book acknowledges that the experiences that people have with family may not be a good one, and it does a good job in showing how the issues of family are relevant to people who are old or young, single or married (or divorced), male or female. Although this book deals with matters a lot of people are going to find very uncomfortable (it is frank about the non-family friendly material that can be found about biblical families and acknowledges the complexities of life in a fallen and corrupt world), it does so with a great degree of graciousness. There is a lot to admire in a book like this, which seeks to make Christians more knowledgeable about the depth of importance of the Bible in the subject of family, as well as giving honor to women and to men, seeking to avoid the conflict and division that is so common between generations and genders, even as it makes very pointed statements against divorce and abortion and sexuality outside the bounds of monogamous heterosexual marriage. Make no mistake, this book is not politically correct and neither does it try to be.

The organization of this book is straightforward, and begins with part one: where we start (looking at the imago Dei, with mankind being created in God’s imagine), and then goes on to part two: mankind revealed, ravaged, and redeemed (looking at how it is not good to be alone, the reason for marriage and family, and how sin harmed our relationships. After this comes a shift in tone to look at our family project (which, I must admit, I have not been successful at), which looks at marriage, mothers, fathers, and children as “image-bearers,” and Satan as the enemy of the family. The book then closes with a look at the destiny of the family in terms of the marriage supper with Christ and the church, and a closing chapter on our imperfect families. The book then has a couple of appendices that look at why it is not good that man should be alone from a scientific perspective as well as a look at whether Jesus and Paul were anti-family, as is often claimed.

There are at least a couple of objections that many people would have in looking at this book, though. For one, a large number of sidebars in the book are based on pictures, many of which contain images of God, which appears to violate the second commandment against graven images. Over and over again the book references these paintings, which contain nudity, a Catholic view of the Virgin Mary, and many portrayals of God or Jesus Christ in a fashion which is contrary to the laws of God. The second major issue is a tension and contradiction in this book between the authors’ relentless focus on the imaginary and anti-biblical doctrine of the Trinity (to the point of reading the Trinity into nearly every description of the Father or the Son) and the book’s similar focus in trying to show the family planning of God. By portraying the Holy Spirit as a being, the real role of believers in being created as sons and daughters of God to be adopted into the Godhead is obscured and displaced, diminishing the real importance of the Family plan of God. This tension is never resolved in the book, even though there are cases where the contrast between the supposed heavenly triad and the family triad of parents and children are placed directly next to each other in the text. No book is perfect, I suppose, but it is a shame when defective theology undercuts a message I clearly support about the importance of family to God, even if it’s an area where my own life has been very unpleasant.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good resource for small groups 7 août 2014

"The Family Project" by Glenn T. Stanton and Leon C. Wirth is a companion book to the 12-session small group curriculum created by Focus on the Family. With the idea of family in such disarray and under attack in public arenas, this book brings some clarity, definition, and meaning to "family". The book is divided into four sections which seek to lay a Biblical framework for family and marriage. Each chapter concludes with a reflection statement which sums up the main idea from each chapter, as well as a number of reflection questions for digging deeper into the ideas presented in each chapter.

I found this book a little hard to digest on my own, but believe it would be an excellent resource for a small group to go through together. There were a lot of theological ideas presented, which can make for heavier reading at times. The main points were presented clearly and each chapter built well on the previous ones. Overall, this is a good resource for bringing added definition and clarity to what family means.

(I’ve received this complimentary book from Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for a review. A positive review was not required and the views expressed in my review are strictly my own.)
4.0 étoiles sur 5 The Family Project is Simple and Elegant 26 août 2014

As a former Bible College student with two degrees, it can sometimes be challenging to read a book that seems very…foundational. At first, I was challenged by the simplicity of the book, but then realized that it was beautifully simple. It is definitely written for those that know a little about the Bible and the narrative that it contains, but not for those that are intellectually rigid.

The book draws on vast amounts of research done by secular organizations and scientists. Furthermore, this information is presented in a coherent and logical manner so that the points are not just made, but driven home with surety and confidence. Seeing science and Scripture woven together so effectively was refreshing and invigorating. I applaud the authors and researchers for their hard and diligent work and would recommend this book to anyone interested in the sociological position of Believers or those that are wanting to know how God wants to work in their lives in and through their families.

This is a Focus On The Family! The Family Project,by by Glenn T. Stanton and , Leon C. Wirth . I found this book would be good for people who were young Christians who did not understand the family.

This book goes chapter by chapter explains from the garden of Eden what a family is and the different roles the male and female have. There is content in in not good for younger ones! I was very grateful to the authors for pointing out the links to the art showed some undressed paintings thus I avoided the links to be on the safe side. No surprises!

This is a new book which just came out last month! The world is watching how we live as families, more than just what we say about faith. We must show how God’s design for families is the key to understanding significance, belonging and, ultimately, eternity with Him. The Family Project is the perfect way to do that.
