This is an anthology and sampler combination. It includes stories by five authors, followed by some excerpts from their books. The stories and excerpts are lengthy. I actually don't have a favorite. They were all equally good, and all worthy of five stars.

"Legacy Lost" is a romance story about mermen and mermaids followed by an excerpt from the book "Of Poseidon." Although "Legacy" can be a stand alone story, it is probably a preface to the book.

"The Witch of Duva" has all the characters of Hansel and Gretel but a slightly differing plot. It's followed by an excerpt from the unrelated (probably) fantasy book "Shadow & Bone," about two orphans trained for the military. The excerpt gives just a glimpse into the settings and characters of this complex world.

"The Prophet" is less a stand alone story because of lack of ending, and is a preface to the book "Struck." Both main characters are struck by lightening and seem to have acquired gifts from the strike.

"Dress Your Marines in White" is an "evil scientist" sci-fi story set in the near future. It's followed by an excerpt from the book "Monument 14." The story is unrelated (probably) to the book. In the book teenagers are hit by a giant hailstorm while on the bus to school, and seek shelter in a superstore. This book sounded intriguing.

"Glitches" is a kind of Cinderella-cyborg story. 11-year-old Cinder is adopted by a family in New Beijing after her family is killed in Europe. She is left with an artificial hand and leg after the accident, and later discovers some interesting programming in her brain. This story isn't followed by another excerpt of a book, only an ad for the book "Cinder."

This anthology contains a selection of short stories followed by excerpts from the author's full length novel. The selections are all fantasy/sci-fi/dystopian. Since there's such a glut of new fantasy novels for young adults out there post Twilight, it's a good pick to try out these books without having to waste your money.

There's 5 different authors, one short story followed by the opening chapter or two of the novel that goes along with it. Of the 5 in this anthology, there were 2 I considered good, 2 that were mediocre, and one that was bad.

1. "Legacy Lost" by Anna Banks, followed by preview of Of Poseiden. This is the worst story of the lot. Terribly clunky present tense narrative reads like a bad romance novel. Mermaids and such. 1.5-2 stars.

2. "The Witch of Dugo" by Leigh Barduga, followed by preview of Shadow and Bone. This is the best story, an excellent and disturbing retelling of Hansel and Gretel with an unexpected twist. Shadow and Bone also looks very good- fantasy/magic, good world building in first few chapters. I was able to download chapters 1-5 for free and have it reserved at my library. 4 stars.

3. "Prophet" by Jennifer Bosworth, followed by preview for Struck. The short story seemed like an afterthought- publisher told me to write something, so here it is. The preview for the novel was longer and had quite a different voice/style. Dystopian with cults and end of world events, prophet who hears the voice of God. This was average for me- kind if thing I'd enjoy reading and promptly forget. I may possibly check it out but won't look for it. 3 stars.

4. "Dress Your Marines in White" by Emmy Laybourne, followed by preview for Monument 14. Meh. Evil government biological weapon out of control. Short story was below average writing and not terribly believable. 2 stars. Novel preview was moderately better- premise looks vaguely interesting. Teens trapped in store during disasters. 2.5-3 stars

5. "Glitches" by Marissa Meyer followed by preview for Cinder. How lucky for Ms. Meyer to be right next to Twilight in the library. Luckily her book is actually good. Cinder- futuristic retelling of Cinderella with a mechanically minded cyborg. I read the first 5 chapters and was interested-I'll finish this one. Somewhat simplistic writing style- this could be a good one to use with older reluctant readers as the reading level seems pretty low. Glitches is a short prequel, not too much there. 3.5-4 stars

I appreciate these anthologies as it shows me a lot of works I might otherwise skip.

Each author wrote a short story and included the first few chapters of their novel. Since I am compulsive about finishing reading what I have begun I had to skip the previews, at least until I have time to get involved reading more series. I did enjoy the short stories however.

I had just finished reading Cinder when I came across this and realized I had been reading a book for young readers. I was pleasantly surprised! I will be reading more from these authors. I am a little older than the target audience but I am an avid reader and would recommend this for all audiences from teen to older.
