Présentation de l'éditeur

The flipped classroom has gained press and credibility within education circles. The lecture or didactic component of the lesson becomes available to the learner as a video to be viewed during his or her own time, often as homework. The advantage of the flipped classroom is that the content, often the theoretical/lecture-based component of the lesson, becomes more easily accessed and controlled by the learners.

A major roadblock or barrier to the implementation of this model is that many educators do not know what to do in the classroom with the time once spent doing lectures. For educators, who are used to and use the didactic model, a framework is needed to assist them with the implementation of the Flipped Classroom.

The Flipped Classroom Model: The Full Picture is a model where the video lectures and vodcasts fall within a larger framework of learning activities. It provides a sequence of learning activities based on the learning theories and instructional models of experiential learning.

The Flipped Classroom: The Full Picture provides a discussion of how videos lectures fall within a larger framework of learning activities; strategies for using technology to support a full cycle of learning and address a full spectrum of learning activities and learning styles; and ideas for using technology to support a broad range of student learning including reflection and demonstration of knowledge.

Chapters are: What is the Flipped Classroom; Problems and Issues with the Flipped Classroom; The Flipped Classroom: The Full Picture; How The Flipped Classroom: The Full Picture Supports Universal Design for Learning; The Flipped Classroom in Higher Education; Mobile Learning and the Flipped Classroom; An Example Lesson; and The Flipped Classroom: The Full Picture for Tinkering and Maker Education.

This is a short book that's far shorter than it seems. The author repeats the same basic point--that in a flipped classroom, educators need to figure out what to do with their classroom time--without providing much help towards achieving that. Every chapter seemed to make that point, tell a couple of not-very-helpful stories, repeat that same point yet again, and then provide long non-annotated lists of software and other resources. (There are some concrete ideas that might work in a pre-collegiate level, but the college teaching stuff was...not there.)

This book is extremely inexpensive, but I still didn't get my money's worth. It's possible that if I needed to construct a flipped class from scratch--including the tech side--that the lists of computer programs would be useful, but I'll be drawing on my University's resources. If I were doing this from scratch, I'd need a much better book than this.

If you're serious about flipping, you need a lot more than this book. If you're just looking for a taste of what's possible with this concept...you still need more than this book.

As a college professor, always looking for new approaches to teaching, I found this book very interesting. It isn't really about the Flipped Classroom approach, but rather, about something called UDL (Universal Design Learning), which can accommodate the Flipped Classroom model, but is a much more comprehensive, in that it engages students in various types of learning before and after class. (You can see the four quadrants of this model on the book's cover). While the author doesn't go into great depth about the approach, here are a lot of external links to websites with more information on its various aspects. The book is a bit repetitious, as the author goes over the model several times, in only slightly different contexts. However, each time she does, she brings new and interesting external links. Despite her claims of providing interesting in-class exercises to compliment the Flipped Classroom online study component, I didn't come away from the book feeling that I had gained a lot of ideas or techniques for that aspect. Overall, I found the book useful and a good resource. I will be referring to it again as I try to restructure my classes.

The text is current, well researched and provides educators with
learning space insights and methods. Reflection on these ideas
adds to a more clear idea of the flipped classroom.
Well done!!

"The Flipped Classroom: The Full Picture" contains quite a lot. It gives a circumspect view of the flipped classroom, and discusses it intelligently, rather than suggesting it's the best thing since sliced bread (Point of irrelevance, what was the best thing before sliced bread?). It's something that needs to be digested slowly and discussed with peers, rather than swallowed whole, but it's definitely worth looking at.
