2.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Story, Abysmal Kindle Formatting, Terrible Editing, Mediocre Writing 13 avril 2014

Ouch!

I have never seen such a promising book pulled down by so many issues. I almost gave up, but I wanted to finish it so I could write a review with full knowledge of the entire book.

The good: The author is highly imaginative, and the plot was varied and interesting. Not being a writer myself, I am amazed at this author’s ability to write a story so complex.

The bad:
Formatting: I’ve never seen such a poorly formatted Kindle book. Hugh swathes of the book looked like they had been copied and pasted out of a text-only email, as there were hard line breaks after a set number of characters, leading to irregular line lengths (one line the full length, the next with one word, for example). Other sections did NOT have line breaks where they were needed – a new section in the story line would be in the same paragraph as the previous section. Normally I don’t feel that a review should be downgraded for small formatting issues, but this was egregious, and constantly interrupted the flow as I had to reread to figure out who was talking or where we were suddenly transported.

The editing: Maybe there was some editing done before this book was released, because there were missing words, or extra words that looked like the leftovers of an edit. But there were also many, many entirely wrong words and misused commas (in fact, sometimes it felt like the author was exactly reversed in comma usage, placing them where they were not needed, but not using them where they were needed). There was also were some cases of just plain bad English (“...me and Abbie will be...” or “...did not try to hide the sarcasms in her voice...”).

The writing: I am not a writer, so I have to say that this author tried. But I also felt like I was reading a second-grade primer sometimes, the language was so pedantic and simplified in some sections. Again, an editor could help. I also found the characters were weak when the plot needed them to be weak, and then suddenly they would be strong again, if that’s what the plot called for. For all the complexities of this plot, I felt a lack of suspense after a while, because I knew that the protagonist would overcome even insurmountable odds due to some previously unrevealed assistance or ability.

Yelling and screaming: I looked up the word “yell” and found that it was used 191 (!) times in this book. Wow, even I was surprised by that number. “Screamed” was used 102 times, so at least we had a bit of variety. Sigh.

Violence: Yes, vampires are often violent (depending on the author). But the violence in the high school fight was disappointing to me (and had no purpose that I could see), and I skimmed over most of the vampire fight scenes because it was all just a bit too much.

Overall, I enjoyed the first quarter of the book the most, but the issues outlined above continued to weigh down the plot, and I just can’t recommend this book to anyone unless the author spends some time editing and polishing the formatting. I hope RM Garcia bothers, because I think this could be a good book with some more work.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A new take Vampires. 11 décembre 2013

This book is very high on my favorites list. A completely new take on the Vampire genre. I couldn't wait for the second book to come out. The author brings the characters to life with such depth, that you care what happens each step of their journeys. I found it extremely difficult to put the book down. Wonderful and tantalizing story. I have to thank the author for following a dream and bringing us this novel. Which I believe will set a new standard in not only Vampire, but horror and adventure books alike. Thanks.

This story has more than one personality. Some engaging boy/girl relationship, a bit of erotica coming from the vampire aspect, and some thriller/adventure. There is also a particularly well thought out world.
Readers who like vampires will love it, and general readers will also enjoy it.
Nicely written and professionally presented.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 WOW!...Mind Blown!..A Masterpiece! 11 juillet 2013
Par Book Reviews by Jason - Publié sur Amazon.com

The author provided me with a copy of the book for a fair and honest review. Just by the synopsis the author provided I was intrigued and looking forward to reading it. Then, he told me himself in an email, and I quote, "Don't worry though, my book is nothing like twilight, I know there are a lot of vampire lovey dovey stories out there now. Mine should be different enough to stand out in the genre." I will agree; it does stand out!

After Donnie endured a really rough and trying year; losing both of his parents, and all but giving up on life himself, he meets the beautiful and elusive (when it comes to relationships) Abbie. Although he is smart has a problem with history, and Abbie happens to tutor the subject, so he signs up for sessions. This was the break he needed, and soon they fell in love.

After high school, Abbie went off to college and Donnie became a mechanic. Things were great, until Abbie went to Florida on a vacation trip she won. It was supposed to be a weeklong "girls" trip with her friends. However, someone had different plans for her. She was given the choice to be turned into a vampire, or have all those that she loved be killed. She chose to become a vampire. After doing so she went back home and hung herself to give the impression that she was dead and there was even a funeral.

Donnie, however, did not believe that the events were true and he set out to find the truth. This was when his spirit guide leads him to "the spot" where he crashes his car and falls to his impending death. As he is dying his beloved Abbie appears. She sees that he will not live, and in a state of frenzy, she decided to feed from him.

In the aftermath of the feeding, and to Abbie's surprise, Donnie soon awakes. Neither of them can believe it, and soon they find out that Donnie is not a typical vampire himself. Donnie vows to protect Abbie once they learn that she is in danger and is being hunted by the "bloodline" that turned her. Little did either one of them know the war that was about to ensue.

I honestly did not know what to expect when I was getting ready to read this novel. I think I was expecting more of a vampire horror type novel, but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. I truly could not, nor did I want to, put this book down. It had me captivated from the start.

I wanted to give this book a 5 star rating, but the reason why I didn't is because there were too many errors; additional words in sentences and the in chapter "scene" change breaks was not used until the later chapters in the book, which made some parts of the book a little confusing. Some of it could have been because of formatting issues, but some were probably editing oversights.

Aside from that, like I said before, this book was able to draw me in and get to my emotions in multiple areas of the story. Because of this, this book, and this author, has quickly become one of my favorites. I cannot wait to sink my eyes into the next installment of the series.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Tries a little too hard 10 avril 2014

I think the bones for a great vampire story are buried in here somewhere. They're just not all put together yet. I think the author has an intriguing idea here -- but it's just taken too far. It's like the author is trying so hard to be different that he/she starts forcing things and the more you force things the harder it is to swallow what's being put in front of you. This is well written, though, with only a handful of typos. I think the one thing that is really holding this back is the cover. I don't think the cover really tells the reader what the series is about -- and that might be hindering the audience.
