This is my first "megapack," and it won't be my last.

It is a hefty collection of stories, most short and a couple long. The stories are not introduced, and the collection has no unifying theme; they're just ... there to read. But they're good stories, by good writers. In fact, the most appealing thing is probably the range of writers, which includes old-time classics like Isaac Asimov and Henry Kuttner, as well as contemporary practitioners and, maybe most pleasing of all, people who write science-fiction but aren't always thought of as "genre" writers, like Kurt Vonnegut and Ayn Rand.

Now, the stories are probably nobody's best work, but with one or two exceptions, they aren't bad at all. The price in incredible, and I can't imagine how a book this size can be sold this cheaply without violating anybody's copyright.

My favorite story, for what it's worth, was probably Edgar Pangborn's "Angel's Egg;" Mary Turzillo's "Zora and the Land Ethic Nomads" was a strong contender, too. There were a couple of stinkers, notably two of the longest stories: Rand's "Anthem" and Harry Harrison's "Sense of Obligation." Both authors have their fans, and perhaps these are wonderful complex stories full of powerful ideas, but I'll never know, because I couldn't stand to finish them, and am doing my best to forget what I did manage to choke down.

As a technical matter, there's an active table of contents, and there are a few -- but only a few -- transcription errors.

If you like science fiction and have broad tastes, this is a great value.

Dear Amazon Readers,

The Fourth Science Fiction Megapack is stuffed full of tales both bizarre and wonderful, whether a modified Tale of Tinkers on Mars or the crux of the matter between a shy research scientist, a multiverse machine and the driver of a beer truck. You will think and smile your way through this one.

As delightful as the first three megapacks, the Fourth Science Fiction Megapack makes for perfect summer fare. Whether on the sands of a beach or from the porch swing in the mountains, this collection goes well with ice cold lemonade or a Venusian Frappe.

I love the Megapack series. The previous 3 in the scifi genre were superb. And this is no exception. 25 stories by every famous author you've ever heard of ( I know it's redundant, wiseguys ) for less than a buck.
Are you nuts, or what? Just buy it.

This is the fourth Science Fiction Megapack, following the success of the first three volumes, The Science Fiction Megapack: 25 Modern & Classic Tales by Masters, The Second Science Fiction Megapack and The Third Science Fiction Megapack. These 24 stories and one book-length megastory are from science fiction's golden age.

One way to get a feel for the collection while investing a minimum of time is to read the five shortest stories. It may also be satisfying to think of reading them as a protest against Harry Harrison's "Sense of Obligation" which occupies 25% of the book without providing 25% of the enjoyment. C'mon editor--as with skirts and jail sentences, short is best. With that in mind, here are the shortest:

E. C. Tubb's "Food for Friendship" finds two spacemen stranded on a planet where food is scarce. They are looking for a way off-planet. And they keep thinking about their stomachs.

*Kurt Vonnegut's "The Big Trip Up Yonder" shows how an increased lifespan can keep families together longer.

Cynthia Ward's "Regenesis" explores the scientific, religious, and artistic implications of a new human ability to grow new body parts.

James Stewart's "Plato's Bastards" follows a man as he goes about his business while those about him are losing theirs.

In David Grinnel's "Top Secret" a Good Samaritan helps a stranger to his feet and is left trying to explain a strange impression.

Most of these stories are enjoyable, although they exhibit the signs of "out of date" science and off-target predictions about the future that is now our present. But it is entertaining to view the universe through the assumptions of the past. The collection is a fairly good one. Not great, but good. It is worth a buck and some of your time.

Satisfied readers may wish continue the Megapack series with the next volume, The Fifth Science Fiction Megapack.

*I'll point out in passing that the contrast between his short, simple, brevity-invoking first name and his long, hard-to-spell last name is much like the contrast between the true short stories in this collection and the single lengthy, hard-to-get-through megastory from Mr. Harrison. Just sayin'...

3.0 étoiles sur 5 An okay read! 8 janvier 2013

As per the title of this book, this is the fourth instalment in a series of compilations of various science fiction writers. This book is not the best in the series but it is not the worst. The series includes short stories from both well-known authors (such as Asimov) and some not so well known authors (at least to me). This is one of the reasons that I usually download these types of books. I enjoy reading stories by authors that I have never read before, and I find it to be an excellent opportunity to experience an author and to get the feel of his / her work. If I like it I usually go looking for more of their stories to download and read.

In this volume, I enjoyed the following stories the most:

"The Life Work of Professor Muntz," by Murray Leinster
"Tiny and the Monster," by Theodore Sturgeon
"Beyond Lies the Wub," by Philip K. Dick
"The Grandmother-Granddaughter Conspiracy," by Marissa Lingen
"Living Under the Conditions," by James K. Moran

Overall, it was a nice mix of stories and I recommend this book to anyone interested in a good read.
