When Gruwell was a first-year high school teacher in Long Beach, CA, teaching the "unteachables" (kids that no other teacher wanted to deal with), she discovered that most of her students had not heard of the Holocaust. Shocked, she introduced them to books about toleranceAfirst-person accounts by the likes of Anne Frank and Zlata Filopvic, who chronicled her life in war-torn Sarajevo. The students were inspired to start keeping diaries of their lives that showed the violence, homelessness, racism, illness, and abuse that surrounded them. A high school class of "at-risk" students in Long Beach, California, inspired by their English teacher, Erin Gruwell, kept this joint diary of anonymous entries. Three voices read, one for Gruwell, one for the girls, and one for the boys. These kids have rough lives, and the pieces range from puerile to horrific to moving as the class garners national and even international attention. All three narrators are clear, personable, and good at conveying emotion. But the snapshot quality and anonymity of the entries leads to sameness and a flattening effect, a fault of the text that the readers cannot overcome. Une magnifique leçon de vie qui devrait servir d'exemple à bon nombre de personne sur cette planète. Je pense que de telles oeuvres devraient être étudiées en cours d'anglais au même titre que Voltaire ou Beaudelaire de même que Beaumarchais en Français, et seraient des textes plus intéressant et plus instructifs que "Dave at the swimming pool!" par exemple. Bien qu'écrit en anglais il en reste très compréhensible, et c'est une bonne évaluation de la vie des adolescents de cette région.

This book, and the film that was made from the story of Erin Gruwell and her pupils, ought to be read/seen by all teachers. What a lesson these children (and their teacher) give us all!

Gold Star Award Winner!This is the book that the movie "The Freedom Writers" is based on. These are the diaries of the students put into one book. There are no names used in the book--each diary entry has a number, so that the students could feel free to write what they wanted without knowing exactly who wrote what. Personally, I think this is a great idea because the diary entries were very open and you could tell the students wrote exactly what they felt. THE FREEDOM WRITERS DIARY is a truly excellent book, because everything is so real and most of The Freedom Writers had to grow up at an extremely early age. Many had their innocence taken away around the age of ten. The Rodney King riots were going on and the Columbine High School event occurred during the time of the book. These high school students had seen more murder and dead bodies then most people will ever see in their entire lives. 99% of The Freedom Writers have even been shot at. This is an extremely true and eye-opening statistic. Segregation is still an issue in the United States, even though many people don't have to deal with it.
