Description de l'ouvrage

18 février 2014

With the murderous Kimball clan’s evil power plays finally put down, Dr. Jacob Christianson begins to embrace his role as leader of the Mormon polygamist community of Blister Creek, hoping to slowly bring his people into the modern age. But then the world around Blister Creek begins to fall apart: An international crop failure and global starvation. Freezing temperatures and active volcanoes. Fuel and medicine shortages. Widespread lawlessness and looming war. The residents of Blister Creek suddenly find themselves facing the very end-of-the-world scenario they’ve been preparing for. Years of stockpiling guns, ammunition, food, and fuel are paying off: They are ready to wait out whatever God has in store for them.

Unfortunately, their preparations have not gone unnoticed. A newly empowered government agency and a vengeful governor have their sights set on Blister Creek and are plotting to take control of their supplies. Can Jacob defend his community, calm his terrified people, quell an armed rebellion, and keep government forces out of his people’s business? Only God knows.

Set in a dangerously beautiful landscape against a backdrop of apocalyptic worldwide collapse, The Gates of Babylon is the sixth book in Michael Wallace’s acclaimed Righteous series.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Series maybe winding up??? 24 janvier 2014

I started reading this series with the fourth book, so this is the third I've read and wondered while reading it if it would be the final book, but I'm guessing that there will be at least one more.

This installment occurs in what appears to be the last days which Mormons have long been preparing for by storing food supplies. Those who have settled in Bitter Springs find themselves struggling against bandits, a developing war, and a corrupt governor. There are violent scenes, especially towards the end, but not as many as in previous books.

Some reviewers of previous books in this series seemed to think it was time to end the series, but it seems clear to me that Michael Wallace was building up to this and probably a concluding book.

The novel is rich in the elements that made the previous books great. While the action is somewhat tapered down, it's still there along with a little romance, Mormon theology, and political commentary.

I'm not Mormon, but do enjoy learning more of that faith's beliefs, especially as in this book, the end times. The characterization is rich and full bodied. The credibility of previous books has been attacked by some reviewers, but I'm sure most Mormons will find it credible.

In summation, unless you're absolutely intolerant of the Mormon faith, this is very highly recommended...just try to read earlier books in the series before tackling this one.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 MICHAEL WALLACE HITS ANOTHER ONE OUT OF THE PARK! 22 février 2014

It is 4AM and just finished reading the sixth installment in this riveting series, although with much sadness because it will be a while before Book 7 comes out and I can rejoin my friends in Blister Creek. Other reviewers have covered both Michael Wallace's immense talent as a writer, the story line and character profiles. So, I shall simply say that I strongly recommend reading each of the first six books...in order if possible. The characters, unlike in many other books, are not just bloodless outlines but instead are rich full color portraits that exist in the reader's mind like old friends, people we've known for much of our lives. We care about them and what happens in their lives. Once again, we are eager to see what transpires next and how they continue to live under difficult circumstances,

The story line flows smoothly from on book into the next and each is an adventure in itself. But that is only half of it. Having known VERY little about fundamentalist Mormonism when I began Book 1, I've found the spiritual discoveries in these pages fascinating to say the least. The folks in these books are determined to find a way to continue in what may seem to many readers a very outated religion and lifestyle, while paying a high price to do so. Mr. Wallace is, in no way, preachy or didactic, nor do I believe is he trying to convert anyone to the Mormon faith. What he does is to offer insight and knowledge of a much misunderstood religion as he weaves complex and intriguing stories. I've come away not only entertained, but invested in these characters, most of whom I have great respect for. Thank you, Michael!

Sure wish the last two books were scheduled for release immediately...it will be difficult to wait for them! In the interim, I intend to read more by this wonderful author. In fact, will be purchasing his WWII novel, The Red Rooster, and begin reading immediately upon submitting this review. How about joining me on yet another superb adventure from Michael Wallace? Happy reading to all of you!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Just when you thought it was over... 22 février 2014

Wallace manages, not only to keep up the pace and the tension we expect from this enthralling series, but also to point the storyline down a completely unexpected but perfectly logical path and it’s brilliant.

Throughout this six book series, we’ve watched Jacob Christianson, a physician and the eldest son of the spiritual profit of an insular LDS polygamist community, come to terms with his position in the conclave. In each of the five previous books, the deadly power struggle between the Christiansons and the rival Kimballs is the central plot line that takes us deep into a world most of us know little about. It’s a place where loyalties drive people to do unspeakable things, where scripture is welded like a weapon to dole out punishment and retribution and where the ties of family sometimes mean everything and other times, mean nothing at all. Wallace consistently makes us witness to the diabolically brutal and evil lengths some will go to reach their own ends.
But how long can a family feud go on? How long can the same good guys and bad guys battle it out? Turns out smiting your enemy only means you’re left with the burden of cleaning up the mess, but what an interesting mess it is.

What makes this series most successful is Wallace’s ability to show us this radical cult-like lifestyle of polygamy, religious fervor and blind obedience to a spiritual leader in a light which seems not only plausible, but reasonable. Jacob Christianson is a normal guy with his own religious doubts. He seems reluctant and unaware of his charismatic appeal which draws unlikely followers like a couple of ex-FBI agents, local law enforcement and elders in his community who fight against many things but are most threatened by change.

Christianson’s leadership is tested when, as foretold in the Book of Mormon, the end cometh. What will that look like? How does he protect his community? Is a man whose life has been filled with religious doubt the best person to lead his people through the end of days? Wallace takes us along on the ride and I'm happy to allow him to be in the driver's seat.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent twist on the thriller plot 21 février 2014
Par Aaron Van Gossen - Publié sur Amazon.com

Once again Michael Wallace has delivered an excellent boo about Jacob Christianson and his quest to keep his family and community safe.
In the 6th installment we see the world facing the Last Days, the time most fundamental Christians fear. A volcano has erupted sending the Earth's climate into chaos. The United States is about to fall into anarchy with state governor's declaring independence and military generals following their own agenda.
Once again Jacob faces a formidable enemy not only in the bandits roaming the highways but the government itself intent on stealing Blister Creek's food supply for a population it can't support. But just as Jacob leaves Blister Creek to get vital supplies the government moves in and it's up to Eliza and an unlikely ally to save Blister Creeks food supply.
An excellent follow up to the last five Righteous books, and I can't wait for the next one.

This 6th book in the Righteous series makes a change that I really like...I'm so glad we are finished with the Kimballs and are moving on to the end times. Remember, readers, this is a fiction book, and Michael brings us into a world in chaos as it approaches the end times and how people deal with the prospect of famine and the loss of modern niceties that we all hold so dear (electricity, internet, cell phones, etc). He leaves us contemplating what happens next: once again, I can't wait for the next installment in the series.
