If this volume is any indication, the "Routledge History of Philosophy" series should prove to be a valuable addition to the literature of the Western philosophical tradition. (Only Volume 4 of the projected ten-volume set is currently available.) The period covered here is the 18th and 19th centuries, beginning with Leibniz, concentrating on Kant and Hegel, and ending with Schopenhauer and Kierkegaard. The prose is of a very high standard, considering that more than a dozen contributors were involved, and remarkably free of technical language, though a glossary helps to clarify certain concepts and terms. The bibliography is thorough and very useful. The chapters on Kant's moral and political philosophy (Don Becker), Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit (Robert C. Solomon), and Arthur Schopenhauer (Kathleen Higgins) are particularly well crafted. Recommended for all academic libraries.

The turn of the nineteenth century marked a rich and exciting explosion of philosophical energy and talent. The enormity of the revolution set off in philosophy by Immanuel Kant was comparable, by Kant's own estimation, with the Copernican Revolution that ended the Middle Ages.
