Présentation de l'éditeur

Using the proven methods he developed to overcome dyslexia, Ron Davis adapts those techniques to help sufferers triumph over a variety of common learning disabilities, including:

•Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

•ADHD (the hyperactive variety)

•Math deficiency (dyscalculia and acalculia)

•Handwriting problems (dysgraphia and agraphia)

Outlining clear instructions, the author demonstrates that through a series of mental and physical exercises called "Orientation Counseling" and learning tools called "Symbol Mastery," those struggling with these conditions can now learn how to correct them, embrace their gift, and enjoy learning.

The Gift of Learning: Proven New Methods for Correcting Add, 13 août 2003
Par Nancy Kress - Publié sur
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
Anyone dealing with problem students will find this book to be a five-star wonder. Even if you're not the teacher, the understanding you get by reading this book will help you deal with the problem learner in a whole new (and better) way because you better understand the nature of the problem. Ron Davis not only understands the visual/experiential learner, but he can explain WHY there is a problem---like the difference between a number and numeral, and how a particular thought process can have great difficulty with the symbols of the numerals and letters. His explanation of why some students can't seem to read handwriting---even when it's their own---and how to "erase" the problem letters and then ingrain a new handwriting that will be legible is so easy to understand and simple to address, it is a wonder the process hasn't been invented before. While this book might not have wide appeal (how many are dealing with problem students?) it is a MUST READ for those who are in need of correcting addition, math, and handwriting problems.

This book gives you a REAL solution 4 juin 2011

My wife is dyslexic, dyspraxic and ADD, but this did not stop her getting two degrees and leading a successful career. In her late thirties, while training to become a psychotherapist, she came across The Gift of Dyslexia, Revised and Expanded: Why Some of the Smartest People Can't Read...and How They Can Learn and went through a Davis programme. It transformed her life to the extent that I have now trained to deliver the Davis dyslexia and ADD programmes. I believe this was one of the best decisions in my life. I now enjoy working with highly intelligent people unleashing their full potential, and I can not imagine anything more fulfilling as a line of work. Ron's second book, the Gift of Learning is crammed full of practical how-to instructions which truly work. In fact that is the only down-side of this book, compared to his first book The Gift of Dyslexia, Revised and Expanded: Why Some of the Smartest People Can't Read...and How They Can Learn, this new one is a bit too much like a manual. It does not have the same amount of inspirational stories as his first book. Nevertheless, the procedures in this book WORK. If you have a child struggling with maths, ADD, AD/HD, or handwriting issues, this book is one of the very few out there which will actually show WHAT YOU CAN DO about it.

Follow on to The Gift of Dyslexia. More hands on tools. 20 décembre 2014

Follow on to The Gift of Dyslexia. More instructions and more understanding on how dyslexia for math, writing and reading think.

Two years ago during a parent teachers conference with my 3rd graders teacher at asked, "Is there such thing as math dyslexia?" She thought there was but nothing came of it.

For two more years my child struggled, teachers and myself got frustrated. This is a smart kid. Reading, writing, and memorizing words and letters weren't a problem BUT math was like a foreign language. Even with an IEP in place the teachers were still teaching the same way and my child still wasn't getting it.

Thank goodness my parents are in the school system and went to a teachers in service for dyslexia. A 2nd grade teacher and Davis certified instructor taught the class and cover dyscalculia (math dyslexia). Point by point my mother knew this was exactly what her grandchild had.

Hopeful that I finally had some answers I talked to this wonderful teacher and she explained her background and the therapy she offered. She was apologetic that it was expensive. She suggested I start by educating myself by reading [book:The Gift of Dyslexia: Why Some of the Smartest People Can't Read...and How They Can Learn|824615] and [book:The Gift of Learning|1941450].

I cried with relief as I read through the pages about dyscalculia. I finally understood how my child saw numbers and I had direction to help teach my child and help the school system understand the way modify their teaching tools to make my kid successful.

I can't speak to the teaching methods in these books but as a parent that has a smart, hard working kid that just wasn't understanding simple math this was a godsend.

This was a good overview for dyslexia in: reading, writing, math

I am about halfway through this book and am getting alot out of it. I have my master's in teaching and it gives me many different perspectives in the classroom with my students. I bought it because of my son and his difficulties. This book is addressing them all. I hope to learn how to deal with students that have differences better in my classroom and with my son at home, too. This may even be a teacher gift for my children's teachers!
