Présentation de l'éditeur

Dr. Wyatt Case is never happier than when he’s walking the halls of his history museum. Playing wingman for his best friend at Gravedigger’s Tavern throws him way out of his comfort zone, but not as much as the eccentric man behind the bar, Ash Lucroix.

Ash is everything Wyatt doesn’t understand: exuberant, quirky, and elbow deep in a Gaslight lifestyle that weaves history into everyday life. He coordinates his suspenders with his tongue rings. Within hours, Wyatt and Ash are hooked.

But strange things are afoot at Gravedigger’s, and after a knock to the head, Ash starts seeing things that can’t be explained by old appliances or faulty wiring. Soon everyone at Gravedigger’s is wondering if they’re seeing ghosts, or just going crazy. The answer to that question could end more than just Wyatt and Ash’s fragile relationship—it might also end their lives.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Spooky romance with a "museum procedural" twist... 3 mai 2013
Par Ulysses Dietz - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle|Achat vérifié
I do like Abigail Roux's books, and this was recommended to me by friends on Goodreads particularly because, like the main character, Wyatt Case, I am a chief curator at a museum. But more about that later.

Roux is a good writer, no matter what, so this book won't disappoint in that regard. She creates an interesting setting - the Fan district in Richmond, Virginia - and an even more interesting cultural context - the "gaslight" world (I laughed when it was described as sort of like steampunk without the steam or the punk, because that actually made sense to me). I loved the setting and the front-story of the Gravedigger's tavern, and the way it drew Wyatt Case's interest as a historian. The romantic set up of the self-isolating museum nerd and the sexy "out there" bartender makes perfect sense in the modern gay world. Of course, my usual mild carping that everybody doesn't really need to be "stunning" to be sexy or appealing, obtains. I know plenty of attractive curators who don't look like models or have swimmers bodies or mad sexual skills (well, honestly, I don't know that part...).

The gradually evolving ghost story, and the historical research that builds up to it is fun, and truly expresses the joy of being a curator and having a thesis slowly but surely fall into place as evidence builds to support it. But I agree with some of the criticism that this book should have been a good deal longer, and Roux should have take more time to work into the more ghostly aspects of the plot - the whole timeline seems to be about two months, and I think she could have started the narrative in the spring and ended it, as she did, at Halloween. By doing this, Roux could also have given us more time to get to know Ash Lacroix and Wyatt Case better - to build up to the museum crisis that threatens Case's job - to follow the halting but steady steps these two men take as they fall under each other's spell. It was not rushed, but it was too condensed and compacted. This is a story that deserved to be spread out and savored, because it is full of richness that we only barely got to taste.

Finally, and I say this with a smile, I have to protest on the "museum procedural" thing...I've worked in a museum for 33 years, and I know how things go. And, to make it funnier, I have actually lectured at the very historical museum in which Wyatt Case works. I loved that Wyatt is facing a crisis that is dumped on his shoulders when it's not really his fault. I know the pressure to come up with brilliant ideas that will bring in an audience - but the timeline here again was rushed and insanely unreal. By expanding the entire story several months earlier into the spring of the same year, Roux could have made a much more realistic museum context and given her fans and her very good characters a deeper, more involving story that would have given us a chance to fall in love, too.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 I was loving it until about 3/4 of the way through 21 octobre 2012

I really was. It had me experiencing chills and gooseflesh. And there was an interesting romance, and some great supporting characters. But then the author seemed to run out of steam and the last 1/4 of the book fell kind of flat.

I don't regret buying it, though it was a bit on the expensive side, and I will probably reread it at some point.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Spooky... 22 avril 2013

Ah, I always enjoy a good spooky story, and this one provided a few genuine chills as the best ghost stories should. Though, it should be noted that the book in no way would be classified as "horror"---the eerie atmosphere, while effective, is still on the mild side and well balanced by the growing relationship between Wyatt and Ash.

The pair of protagonists is quite likable and these two are amply supported by a set of well-drawn supporting characters. You get the feeling that Gravedigger's would be an enjoyable place to hang out---well, apart from all the ghosts and the dreadful history of the building (don't look in the basement!) that Wyatt uncovers, that is...

My only complaint is that a number of times the characters---in best ghost story tradition---occasionally don't act in a sensible manner, and thereby needlessly put themselves into danger. Argh---I wanted to shake some common sense into them!

This one is on the upper end of my "pleasant diversion" scale, and I'll recommend it.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A little disappointing, but a good read nevertheless. 18 février 2013

I've read most of Roux's other works and was, therefore, quite prepared for the style that I generally associate with her writing. Simple plot-lines that I can usually pick very early on but stunning characterisation that really gives the plot a depth and makes it a good read.

The Gravedigger's Brawl was in some ways a disappointment because for one it was too short. I think it was barely over a hundred pages which, you know, allowed me to finish it within a few hours, and didn't give me enough time to really enjoy the setting and characters that Roux had created. All the characters have quite complicated personalities and backstories but they're not as well explored as they could have been. And even though I expected the simple plot-line, I was not prepared for the poorly executed and major flaws of this plot-line. It really disappointed me when in the end of the story things still didn't add up.

But, I have to say, for all that I really did enjoy it because I really liked the characters, except for perhaps the protagonist; he seemed weak and an easy scapegoat to create more drama and tension in the story. Unnecessarily making Wyatt Case an inconsistent character, and not in a good way.

I really enjoyed the Gaslight theme though, and I loved reading about a culture that is completely foreign and yet strangely similar to my own.

Overall, it was a good, easy read, but I definitely think Roux could have done much better, and has in fact.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another great read from Abigail Roux!! 15 octobre 2012

This is the story of Dr. Wyatt Case, a head museum curator, who loves history and keeps to himself or as Noah so eloquently put it: "Wyatt's been oblivious to all things sex-related for like fifteen years..." when he meets Ash Lucroix. A bar keep at Gravedigger's Brawl, Ash has a penchant for suspenders and is scared of ghosts. He is also very funny and I found him to be extremely adorable. That's not to say that Wyatt wasn't adorable or funny, but he was more closed off and his humor was more on the sarcastic side. Anyway, these two were amazing characters to read and their dialog alone was worth my all-through-the night reading.

I could feel the connection between these two immediately. I am not a fan of the `insta-love' and I was glad that Abi didn't go that route with these two. It would have taken a lot from their story. Wyatt's doubts and Ash's hesitation was what made their finally getting together all the more worthwhile for me. Abi made sure that I could understand where each of them was coming from and what they were feeling, so that when they each took that step into relationship territory I believed it and cheered them on for good measure.

Their chemistry was very palpable and I knew that the moment they got together the passion would be off the charts. And dear Lord, I was not disappointed. That has got to be one of the hottest, most sensual scenes I have read lately. Not only that, it was filled with an array of emotions that had me gripping my tablet as if by doing so I could ease the tension. There was sizzling passion, unquenchable lust then came the anxiety, followed by the fear and ending with the disappointment. By the end I was misty-eyed and ready to beat some sense into someone who shall remain nameless.

The ghost story that Abi brought to the page was amazing. It was filled with a lot of history which is very different from any ghost story I have ever read. The events that she described in regards to the ghost were very creepy and very detailed. She managed to constantly keep me in suspense throughout the story, which is another reason that I read the book in one sitting. I could not put it down. Literally! I was so worried about Ash and what he was going through and of course I wanted to know how it all played out.

I enjoyed all the characters and their interactions with each other. Noah, Wyatt's best friend, was hilarious. I enjoyed him a lot. He was funny, sarcastic and totally out there. His interaction with Wyatt was very enlightening in the sense that it really showed me a side of Wyatt that he usually kept hidden from others. I also enjoyed Ash's friends - Caleb, Delilah and Ryan. I liked how he interacted with them. They were like a family and since he felt so comfortable with them he tended to be more himself which really helped in me connecting with him.

The writing was excellent - with well developed characters, great dialog filled with humor and emotion and a story full of mystery and suspense. The resolution to the main plot was handled very well and the confrontations with the ghost were very spooky to say the least. All the paranormal aspects of the story were brought forward in a way that made it very interesting and easy to read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has enjoyed an Abigail Roux book and/or likes ghost stories.
