Descriptions du produit

Subdivided into hundreds of domaines, often family-run and sometimes covering no more than a few hectares, Burgundy can be offputtingly fragmented even to wine experts. In compiling this revised edition the authors revisited all the domaines that appeared in previous editions plus scores of 'rising stars', to select the very best and most interesting of them - and remove those that no longer come up to scratch. They have spoken to winemakers about their grapes, soil and techniques - and, of course, sampled their wines. Following on from the domaine-by-domaine guide are descriptions of the microclimates of the region, the most important grapes and wine styles, as well as tips on buying, storing and tasting wine and a rundown of recent vintages.

the book is excellent, but I strongly object to acting as unpaid reviewer of book for amazon.fr - especially as 20 words are demanded when I might only want to write 10 or 15

If you love Burgundy, you want this book 25 juillet 2010
Par Chambolle - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié
There are three books on Burgundy that are absolute must haves: Clive Coates' "Cote d'Or," or his revised edition now called "Wines of Burgundy"; Anthony Hanson's "Burgundy"; and THIS book, Remington Norman's "Great Domaines of Burgundy." (There is now a fourth book that joins the "must have" list: Jasper Morris of Berry Bros. has prepared his own magnum opus called "Inside Burgundy." As far as I know, it is only available directly from Berry Bros. or from a number of European book sellers, including amazon uk). The first edition of "Great Domaines" came out around 1992, a second edition came around just a few years later. I have both and they are among the most dog eared books in my collection. The second edition went out of print years ago.

Finally, with considerable work and assistance from Charles Taylor, edition three is here. The book consists primarily of detailed profiles of key growers in each of the communes of the Cote d'Or, which include notes on their vineyard holdings, viticultural and winemaking methods and the style of the wines. There's a glossary, some vintage notes, brief notes on organic and biodynamic viticulture and winemaking and so on. If you love Burgundy, it's a book you will read and refer to over and over and over again, in bits and pieces. It's not comprehensive -- the growers are Norman and Taylor's picks and you will no doubt question some that are in and wonder why others are out. You will agree with some of the grower assessments and disagree with others, and that is part of the book's appeal.

The third ed. has been on offer in France and GB since early 2010 and was widely distributed at Les Grands Jours de Bourgogne in March 2010, with Mr. Taylor present to hawk his wares. He has much to be proud of -- updating this book had to be tons of work given the many changes that have gone on in the fifteen years or so since the second edition! At Amazon's quoted price, it's an especially attractive buy -- or you could always purchase your copy in Beaune for twice as much, as I did!

Get it, enjoy it. 2015 UPDATE - This book apparently is no longer in print. However, do some searching around! Reasonably priced 'new old stock' or lightly used copies can be 'bookfindered.'

A Fine Guide to the Golden Slope 12 décembre 2011
Par Roger High - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
This third edition presents details of the finest producers of the Cote D'Or (not the whole of "Burgundy" as the main title may imply), with one or two pages on each producer following a brief description of each commune in order of north to south. These descriptions include a fine map showing the location and classification of each vineyard in the commune. If being picky, I would have liked the general but excellent sections on grapes, wine making practices, terroir etc at the front of the book and not at the back of the book, because a number of terms used in the producer reviews are elaborated upon in these sections. Production, paper quality, illustrations etc are all excellent. I look forward to a similar book on wine producers in other illustrious parts of "Burgundy" including chablis and south of Santenay.

Worthy text for Burgundy lovers ~ 6 mars 2013

I was apprehensive about purchasing this book at first. The reviews seem a little mixed. Luckily it is well worth the price. I'll just put a few bullet points about the book. The book has a little information about Burgundy in general, but the main point of this book is to highlight some of the more notable producers and describe their wine style and their vineyard and cellar practices.

+ Very good maps of each particular village area and their surrounding vineyards.
+ Very informative and interesting wine producer bios.
+ Well written with little humorous facts about the producers.
+ A very good cross section of many fine wine producers, even those not making a lot of wine.
+ Good photos

- Somewhat limited in the scope because it is a profile of wine producers and not an educational reference.
- Some of the photos in the back section look 20 - 40 years old (and might be from an earlier edition of one of Norman's books).

It's not going to help you pass the Master Sommelier exam. Stick with the Oxford, Sotheby's, or World Atlas of Wine. The Mitchell Beazely guides have some specific texts on specific wine regions. If you want a more in depth look into Burgundy as preparation for an exam go with this: Burgundy (Classic Wine Library).

If you love Burgundy and want to know more about the producers, this is a fantastic text and worth every penny!

Excellent introduction to Burgundy and reference when purchasing 10 juin 2013

I have been intimidated by Burgundy for years so I decided to buy this book to learn about it before spending a portion of my honeymoon there. For newbies to the region, it is a great reference point for understanding the general characteristics and style of particular villages, typical aging expectations, consistency of vineyards from vintage to vintage and when to avoid certain vineyards (buy Corton in warm years, avoid in cool years, etc) and what producers to trust in vineyards that can be inconsistent (Clos de Vougeot). I definitely recommend it for enthusiasts trying to learn more and spend their money wisely while exploring.

This book is a great source if information for the top domaines in Burgundy. For those enrolled in wine education, related to Burgundy is one of the best tools. I wish there was a version with less famous domaines too.
