Présentation de l'éditeur

An original novella linked to Jade Lee's hot new Regency bride series, a prequel to What the Groom Wants.

Caroline Lyncott, great grandaughter of the Duke of Bucklynde, has a secret. Years ago she was attacked and still bears the terrible scars. To escape the scandal and the reminders, she left everything behind to become housekeeper to a Scottish brother and sister.

Gregory Murray, the Earl Of Hartfell, has a secret as well – he harbors a deep attraction to his housekeeper, Mrs. Lyncott. He knows she has a past, but doesn't know how to fix the pain that still haunts her. His investigation leads him to the darkest London gaming hell and a villain too powerful to destroy.

Can his love overcome her desperate past? Can she risk her heart despite the evil that still haunts her nightmares?

Jade Lee's novella, The Groom's Gamble, has an astonishing bit of development in the characters for such a short story. I felt as if the leads had enough background that I knew who they were and understood their actions, although the hero could have had a little more space devoted to his backstory.

Caroline Lyncott is a housekeeper and she has been enamored with her employer for years. She is a sincere, educated woman who is professional and generous. Her employer, Gregory, the Earl of Hartfell is an introspective scientific man who has been intrigued by Carolyn for a long time. He also has a wayward sister and believes that elevating Carolyn from housekeeper to companion for his sister will keep her out of trouble.

Carolyn has secrets and they keep her chained to the past. Yet she cannot resist the chance to attend balls and the theatre as a companion for the Earl's sister. The reader can feel her uncertainty and yearning. Even better is the connection Carolyn and Gregory have. From their first dance, there is an air of romance that surrounds them. Their honesty is refreshing and they exhibit compassion and gentleness. This is a very good story.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good novella works well since H/h attraction has been growing for several years 26 janvier 2014

Lord Hartfell's sister's behavior is escalating out of control, so he enlists Caroline's assistance to help curb her wildness. Their conversation about people acting according to their nature is interesting. Because she is a duke's great-grandaughter and has the appropriate social training, Caroline is promoted from housekeeper to Lady Anne's companion. That throws Lord Hartwell and Caroline together in social situations, which only increases their growing attraction to each other. Caroline has a terrible scar that she won't talk about and Lord Hartwell becomes determined to discover her secret.

Spoilers....... I'm not a big fan of books where the heroine becomes the hero's mistress before he declares himself. This one works a little better because the heroine is literally scarred and assumes she will never marry, so she believes she has nothing to lose and everything to gain by giving herself to a man she loves with all her heart. She is also well employed and could probably find another position (not as a mistress) if she had to, so I didn't worry about her making herself so vulnerable. Caroline is very strong and capable so you know she'll land on her feet no matter what. Fortunately, our hero turns out to be honorable, kind and worthy of her love. ... end spoilers.

Jade Lee always writes well, though I don't always like her plots (ie: Wedded in Scandal hero's seduction is almost forced, but Lady's Lessons triolgy is excellent). This book flows well, has good pacing, good balance of dialogue and inner thoughts. I found Lord Hartwell's sister annoying, but she doesn't make an appearance during the second half of the book so I enjoyed that part more than the first half. Romance was bolstered by the H/h living in close contact for over two years, so their attraction for one another has been steadily growing and comes to fruition during the novella. Quick, easy read with sweet, satisfying ending.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Not at all what I expected 5 février 2014

Having read the other books in this series, I was expecting a light, witty little story that would lead into the next book.

What I got was a very dark almost tragic tale with a happy ending. I was blown away!

I can't say more without spoiling the book - but if you plan in reading What the Groom Wants - you will definitely want to read this first!

As always, Ms Lee writes an exceptional story. Her writing is fresh and emotional. You can't help but to be drawn in.

Novellas are tricky, it's rare that there is enough character development for me. That was the case here. There was a lot that just didn't make sense to me.

Caroline considers herself ruined, but she is the epitome of properness. Which is why it seemed so odd that she's willing to be the mistress of her employer. Gregory acts like he's trying to protect her reputation, but it doesn't quite ring true.

There is a subplot with Gregory's sister, Anne, that is strong in the first half and then just disappears and we are left with no answers. Odd.

There just wasn't enough here to really capture my interest.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Cute 6 février 2014

This book was adorable. Cute, well written, with drama, some sexy scenes and the like. What I didn't like about it was it was way too quick, the status of the male lead and the female lead, are too large to just blankly let them be "happily ever after", and the entire book starts off with the male leads sister dabbling in the occult looking for their dead sister, but she has a season in London and magically forgets all? Like I said cute if you cut out all the plot hole inaccuracies!
