From The Slopes To The Shore…

Are you tired? Are you tired of fancy (or not so fancy) baking books by fancy chefs with even fancier recipes that just don't measure up to all that hype? Are you tired of recipe failures while on a ski holiday or just because you live above 3000 feet? Are you tired of passion fruit foams and green tea cookies when all you want is a chocolate chip cookie recipe that will work every single time? Do you need a pie for the long summer weekend; or a quick, yummy after school treat; or a simple cake with effortless style to make your neighbors jealous; or a truffle that will awaken the mad passionate desires of your lover and make them beg for more? Psssst, do you want a chocolate chip cookie now? No, I mean a really good chocolate chip cookie? Well, let's make that chocolate chip cookie together. It's easy and I can show you how.

Family Recipes From My Home To Yours…

Come with us on a family journey through baking where the luck of the Irish gives way to solid science and produces a collection of family baking favorites that your family will cherish for years to come. This debut collection from Irish-trained chef, Chris Reynolds, celebrates the landscape of his family's baking tradition. This cookbook is a wide-ranging, comprehensive collection chock-full of beloved classics like chewy gingerbread cookies, triple-chocolate brownies, jalapeno cheddar corn bread, shoofly pie, sour cream coffeecake, fresh peach ice cream, crunchy granola, and the best pizza crust ever. This is an inspired collection of classics and contemporary twists where we tease traditional flavours and let you know you've just had something special. Classics with attitude and altitude.

High-Altitude Baking that Really Works…

You'll learn that it's possible to serve a from-scratch comfort food classic like buttermilk biscuits on a weeknight when time is tight or a high-altitude cake on your skiing holiday that won't fall flat. In addition to foolproof recipes, all the recipes were tested at high-altitude by the author, himself. Each high-altitude adjustment is precise to give success at 5200ft (Denver, Colorado). In addition, each chapter introduction gives insights into high-altitude baking and tips on adjusting your own recipes.

Retro-Modern???

Chris Reynolds is a professional baker trained at the Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland by the famed cooking teachers Darina and Rachel Allen. While he embraces an artisan philosophy, emphasizing the freshest organic ingredients, sound techniques, and from-scratch baking; he's also well aware that stirring a caramel on the stove for 90 minutes is a drag. "I wanted recipes that people would embrace, enjoy and actually make. No one, not even me, is going make a cookie that requires me to stand at the stove for 90 minutes. That's just not practical in our modern world." This book embraces a "retro-modern" approach. Old-fashioned recipes are updated for modern life. That could mean streamlining the steps, using modern flavour combinations, using different techniques to give fool-proof results, or even scaling a recipe to feed a family of four.

A Photo Of Every Recipe…

If the easy, care-free recipes don't grab you, then the stunning full-colour photos of every recipe surely will. This book is a delight for the eyes as well as the palate. This is homey, doable baking at its best - a lively, in-depth portrait of a family who loves to bake. Pass me another truffle!

Review Update: 2.18.13 HELP!!!
How do I download the new copy that has a TOC?

I discovered this wonderful source a couple of years ago and was eagerly awaiting their release in a print book. I have struggled with high-altitude baking since moving to Boulder, Colorado from the east coast. Every recipe has the high- altitude adjustment and the recipes are actually a higher quality then what I have found with other high-altitude cooking books. The pictures are beautiful and truly show the fine detail you would want in a baking book- for instance, you can tell the crumb of a cake by the picture.

Sadly, no print book yet. I went ahead and bought the Kindle version and downloaded on my iPad. Unfortunately, I cannot give this book 5 stars as it is a nightmare to use. It is a shame that the organization of the book is the detriment because the content is fabulous. But if you are cooking, the function of the material is just as imporatnt as the content.

I am listing the problems here in hopes that the author can read and rectify:

*Please give us a print copy!

*Pages are not indexed according to whether they are cake, cookie, etc. so you have no idea what chapter you are in or how far away you are from another chapter

*No links to a recipe you want

*Difficult to use as you can only see one page at a time so there's no flipping thru fast to find that frosting recipe. This is the worst.

*The picture of the previous recipe shows up on the current page you are cooking. Distracting.

*No way to see all you're the choices you have unless you go all the way back to the cover page which as noted above, has no link

Sign me a fan but this format needs Help!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent - Even for People With Limited Skills (like me) 12 octobre 2012

I wanted to get into baking (since I can't cook - need the precision that baking requires) and a co-worker recommended this book to me. It's excellent. I made my first-ever cake (the fudge bundt cake from the book) and found the directions to be very well written and easy to follow, even for a absolute novice like me - the photos of the finished product helps a lot too.

Also, I live in the mid-Atlantic so it's good for people who don't live in high altitudes as well.

Author and trained chef Chris Reynolds has written a beautiful Kindle cookbook filled with numerous color images depicting the various baked goods. He has carefully laid out the cookbook so it is a delight for they eyes to read. I do wish he had put in a complete active table of contents rather than explaining how to search for a recipe in his cookbook. His cookbook is so large it truly would have been better with an active table of contents.

What I do LOVE about this cookbook is how the author has personally tested the recipes at a 5,000 plus elevation. From what I've been told, baking at high altitudes can be a bit tricky. The author does offer general baking tips on how to adapt recipes for high altitude baking while offering a large selection of recipes.

Some of the recipes you will find in his cookbook include:

Maple-Glazed Applesauce Cookies
Peanut Brittle
Spicy-Lowfat Granola
Bacon-Cheddar Dog Bones (a treat for your family dog)
Peanut Butter Bacon Cookies
Rustic Bread
Olive Bread
English Muffin Bread
Cakey Scones
Sunday Morning Pancakes
Summer Fruit Tart
Chocolate Truffle Tart
Pepper Jack Mac and Cheese
"Boulder Blackout" aka Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake with Chocolate or Vanilla Frosting

His cookbook is a good value as there are numerous recipes waiting to be prepared. Four stars given due to the lack of an active table of contents.

Highly recommend with caveats given.

Unlike 80% of the other high altitude recipes I have tried since moving to Colorado Springs these recipes actually come out the way you want. This book is amazing and I use it every single day. I would highly recommend it to anyone up here in our rarefied air that needs some recipes pre-adjusted to the mile high club. You won't be disappointed.

high plains sifter is an amazing book for those of us that love delicious, simple, and exciting recipes -- not actually living on the high plains is not a requirement.

the images, the formating for ipad, and the all around attention to detail by the author makes for an enjoyable reading -- as well as working -- use for the book

congrats on a great all around product, the only thing it needs is someone to actually prepare all this for me!
