Bonjour,

Another outstanding entry from Weta Workshop! 9 avril 2013
Par Angie K. Long - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
After reading the first Weta Workshop book on THAUJ, "Chronicles Art & Design" I was eagerly awaiting the second volume, which focuses on "Characters and Creatures."

I was not disappointed. I received the book yesterday and immediately began reading. First of all, it looks great, handsomely bound with an embossed cover and gilt lettering, the four key characters--Thorin, Gandalf, Bilbo and Gollum--each claiming their respective corners of the cover.

Within those covers are many beautiful color photos as well as artists' renderings, and the reader is taken behind the scenes to see, for example, how dwarf prosthetics and wigs are made, the evolution of creatures such as the trolls and the Goblin King, and how the actors protraying elves and dwarves learn how to move and how to find the right accent for their character. There are many quotes from Weta Workshop members and the film crew along with the actors.

I feel as if I know the actors better for having read this book along with getting a good glimpse into the formation of each of their characters. What a camaraderie they developed along the way! And I am impressed mightily by the painstaking attention to detail and craftsmanship exhibited by the makeup and prosthetic artists (who SHOULD have won an Oscar . . .)

If you are a fan of The Hobbit film and love beautiful "coffee table" books that are jam-packed with behind-the-scenes knowledge, you will want to add this to your library. It would make a great gift for a Tolkien fan, too. Definitely five stars!

''Unbelievable artistry and spectacle on display" 12 avril 2013

In my humble opinion, as much as the first chronicles book was amazing, the second one is even more so :)!!! The sheer amount of detail and painstaking realism that WETA have put into the characters and overall world of middle-earth is really awe-inspiring. One thing that these weta books have in common is consistency. All of them have very high quality writing, organization, and crystal clear photography. I love the designs of the cover art too, just an all-around phenomenal addition for fans to own and enjoy. Most all principle characters are presented in this book, along with the creatures too, which are really interesting to look at. I love the digital double and character turnarounds. The textures and modeling are top notch. Any fan of the hobbit or lord of the rings films will LOVE this book.

Just as wonderful as the Art & Design volume 10 avril 2013
Par Sue - Publié sur Amazon.com

As wonderful as Weta's first Hobbit Chronicles volume was, this second volume is as interesting and fun for completely different reasons.

If you love practical make ups and all the incredibly hard work that goes into them, you will love Chronicles II. As helpful as volume 1 is to cosplayers, volume 2 takes that just a step further in showing all the details in dwarf, elf and hobbit prosthetics. While the concept designs for the dwarves in volume 1 was great, seeing the actual appliances and/or sculpts is even better. I love being able see to Thorin's pop Thrain in all of his Odinesque glory, and too, the mining dwarf who found the Arkenstone.

Richard Armitage is terrific in the role of Thorin; Pouring the early sculpting concepts of a long bearded Thorin while reading Richard's comments about what a transformation that would have been, makes me ache just a little bit. A couple of those early concepts seen in the excellent Chronicles 1 were so spot on, imo, they would not detract from how attractive Thorin could be. It makes me wistful, but I am glad to see one of my favorite characters being portrayed so wonderfully in every other way. The nice thing is, we have a record of what might have been in two different forms now. So I appreciate seeing more of those excellent concepts in this book.

The added bonus of reading the actors, the talented Make Up crew and Weta designers' comments about specific designs is terrific. You really do get a sense of how the actors prepared for their roles and what they brought to their characters. It's a treat a read comments other than what a grind wearing those appliances, hair, beards and fat suits were.

In additional to practical make ups, many the digital characters are touched upon as well, including some of Radagast's feathered and furry friends (yay!) There's also a fun Middle Earth Size comparison chart in the very back.

I am looking forward to Weta's Chronicles for the next two Hobbit films. These are the best making of books for fans into costumes, make up, props and all those wonderful tiny details that realy deserve a lot more exposure.

Like it's predecesor, this is an absolutely gorgeous book. One I will definitely reread many, many times. If you enjoyed the Hobbit An Unexpected Journey, you'll enjoy this book.

The Hobbit - Art Book II 24 juin 2014
Par JMM - Publié sur Amazon.com

Weta is an amazing company that does most of the design work on the "Hobbit" films. They do everything from practical effects (prosthetics to miniatures) to digital effects (CGI simulations and character animation). It's important to note that the people that work on these films are not only master technicians, but they are very creative artists as well.

This is the second book in what will be a 6-book series of Weta's chronicles of the Hobbit trilogy. The first book featured the production design and concept art of "An Unexpected Journey"; this book focuses particularly on the characters and creatures of that film. It's a expansive look at the character designs in the film.

There are plenty of high quality images that fans of the film will be interested in -- conceptual artwork of the creature designs; character portraits; photos of the makeup application; etc. The books goes in depth about every aspect of visual characterization, but particular emphasis is placed on the makeup and hair work.

I highly recommend this book (and its companion books as well). As someone who enjoyed the Tolkien novel, I find it fascinating to see how the filmmakers and the creative team took what was on the page and translated it visually into a movie - and I'm happy to own a book that provides an inside look at that process.
just like the other Weta books 31 juillet 2014

Am currently reading this book and enjoying it, just like the other Weta books. The actor interviews next to the movie stills of each character are wonderful and give us intricate background of each character, who they are now, who they were in the past and how they came to join the quest. Jackson missed nothing when he made these movies but the amount of work and research that went into all of this, not only to bring it to the screen but explain the processes and give so much additional info on characters was just mind blowing. Highly recommend this book for anyone who has enjoyed any of the other Weta books on the Hobbit.
