To be honest, I wasn't blown away with this book. After churning my way through The Perfect Scoop by David Lebovitz and Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, I didn't find much in this book that was new and exciting. A few recipe shortcuts turned me off - using ground ginger instead of taking the time steep fresh ginger, using pre-made Nutella instead of just chocolate and hazelnuts, using instant espresso instead of freshly roasted and ground coffee. Also, the recipe yields just half a quart, which is unusual. Most recipes these days are designed to fit in the 1 quart cuisinart that so many beginners have.

I actually do like a lot of the sorbetto recipes and am looking forward to trying out the unique flavors like the hard cider, mulled wine and port, or the muscat sorbet.

For a somewhat seasoned ice cream maker, this book wasn't a revelation of new techniques and flavor combinations. However, it is inexpensive and has much to offer for a beginner.

Matt O'Connor might actually be insane. He is definitely a very, very weird dude with dubious politics and a flair for showmanship. But... you didn't come for the politics. You came for the breast milk ice cream.

The first thing you notice about this book is that the graphic design is loud -- three parts Nadia G, one part ransom note, one part blackboard-full-of-crazy. It's frankly insane to the point of being distracting, which is actually kind of a shame, since it distracts from some rather creative ice cream varieties -- cider sorbet, for example, or rose petal, gianduja, or soda bread and stout ice cream. The flavor names are loaded with innuendo and there's a whole section of ice cream cocktails to boot. O'Connor includes a lot of stories; I would tend towards taking many if not most of them with a grain of rock salt, since they tend to be just about as nuts as the rest of the book. However, if nothing else, O'Connor can spin a tale on a Tucker Max level; your mileage is guaranteed to vary on that.

So... I liked it. It probably isn't for everyone, but the flavors are definitely worth a look. (And the Baby Googoo? Page 52.)
